Fanciful Fall: Wearable Colors Characterize the Chanel Sophisticated Eye Collection

August 29th, 2011 by Karen 29 Comments

chanel sophisticated eye collection

Now that’s what I’m talking about, Coco. 🙂 Your new Sophisticated Eye Collection features some seriously easy-to-wear eye makeup, and it’s making me cuckoo for COCO puffs!

chanel sophisticated eye collection

The sizable 17-piece release, a mix of limited edition and re-promoted items, is available now at Chanel counters, in stores and also online. With classic presentation and an understated palette of highly wearable blue, taupe, purple, brown, pink and beige, the release exudes class. Coco dresses lids in a simple, clean wash of light pink and beige, then blows a kiss of color along the upper lash line. Thick, defined fringe in black, brown or purple and a strong brow ties the look together nicely. Definition: understated, wearable, and totally up my alley.

The release also features a sleek, sassy eyelash curler, and every time I notice that lovely logo emblazoned on it, I question my loyalty to Shu.

A few of the pieces reached out and grabbed me when I swatched the collection yesterday…

  • Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow in Lagons ($57) — Déjà vu, mon amie! The blue and beige shades in this quad take me back to the spring of 2008 and Bleu Celestes from the Aurora Blues collection. I love how intense and sparkly the darker shades are.
  • Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow in Vanities ($57) — I went to sleep last night thinking about the purple, taupe and pink shadows in this quad, and if I were forced to spend a week on a deserted island with just one thing from this collection, this would be it. There’s something special about each of these shades — the intense glitter in the dark purple (so glittery!), the extra buttery texture of the light pink, the two flashy duo chromes (one changes from a plummy brown to a pinkish gold, and the other from a pale pink to a purplish gold). Wow.
  • Inimitable Intense Mascara in Purple ($30) — I’m a huge Inimitable mascara fan (even if I have trouble saying the word, “Inimitable”), so I was stoked to check out it out in Purple. Sadly, the swatch disappointed me a little. The color looks more like a brownish plum than a true purple to me, and I have a feeling it’s intended for ladies with a lighter fringe than mine.

Chanel Brun Purple inimitable
Inimitable Intense in 13. Brun and 14. Purple

The entire Chanel Sophisticated Eye Collection includes…

  • Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow in Vanites ($57)
  • Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow in Vanites ($57)
  • Ombres Essentielle Soft Touch Eyeshadows in Magic Night, Lily, Twilight and Fauve ($28.50 each)
  • Crayon Sourcils Sculpting Eyebrow Pencils in Blond Clair, Brun Naturel, Brun Cendre and Noir Cendre ($29 each)
  • Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliners in Taupe and Ebene ($29 each)
  • Inimitable Intense in Mascara in Brun, Purple and Noir ($30 each)
  • Beute De Cils Nourishing Mascara Base ($30)
  • Recourbe Cils de Chanel Precision Eyelash Curler ($34)

What do you think of the look the Chanel model is wearing in the display, the neutral beige and pink lid with a line of thick blue shimmer along her upper lash line? Seems like it would be a perfect way to ease into wearing brights, doesn’t it? — unless blue is totally off the table for you, in which case you could swap it out for one of the brown, taupe or purple shades from the release.

So far, I like what I’ve seen from this collection, and even though the pieces are expensive, they seem like products I would use all the time.

I want these Jeans!

The three polishes in the limited edition Les Jeans De Chanel collection will strut their stuff September 8 for Fashion’s Night Out, an after-hours shopping extravaganza/marketing push held in cities around the world.

All three shades will also be available online, and if you’re interested, you can sign up to be alerted when they go live.

What do you think about blue nail polishes? I do like the way they look on my toes…

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

LOVE this Chanel review! Thank you for doing this one. I adore the pink lid look with a bold liner. I think I’ll try that look soon.

The blue polish is great, but I think Essie’s “Something Blue” beats that robin’s egg blue Chanel has. Essie’s is just a hint lighter, and yes! I love it on my toes. I can’t get enough of that shade.

    Hooray for conquering Monday!

      Hi Heidi,

I’m having major eyeshadow lust over that quad. Next time you hit up Chanel you’ve got to swatch it! It’s like love in a compact.

How was your Monday? Good, I hope.

Not too bad. Finished one of the three books I’ve been reading — Tim Gunn’s Gunn’s Golden Rules. A fantastic read. It’s such a great combination of juicy dish about people in the fashion world, and really inspiring stories from his interesting life.

34 dollars for an eyelash curler. It better out perform the Shu Uemura eyelash curler.

Whenever I Pass these eyeshadows t work, it’s probably the most tempted I’ve ever been to just reach out and steal something. I. Want.

On the other hand (and maybe its just my broke, jealous a$$ being bitter), but if I see someone paying $34 for an eyelash curler that, when held side-by-side, is practically identical to my Revlon one with the exception of saying “Chanel”, it’s gonna be hard not to whack them over the head with a makeover appointment book!

I love the models make up look. I really like the idea of a sort of subtle lid with sparkly blue mod/60’s liner…I also dig that she’s a redhead! Different!
I’ve never been so tempted by Chanel before.
I think I’m going to try to recreate the look using my drugstore stuff…I’ll prob check out the shadows in person to get a better idea of colors. I might even swatch the shadows, leave them on my hand and go home and try my best to match them, Lol. It might be kinda fun or kind of a chore…meh.
I’ll skip the Chanel eyelash curler. If I’m going to spend a bit of money on one, I think I’d go with Shu also.

Clever Chanel folks – they’re betting that a lot of people will be just like me: they’ll discover a need to replace their beloved Shu curler only to discover that (gasp!) they’re not sold in the US anymore. Ebay prices on them are climbing and the Chanel curler my look like a viable alternative.

I agree about blue polish on my toes, particularly in the navy range. The collection does look really nice but I think my favorite part is the promo pic with the black curlers/red polish. I’m not a particular fan of black, white and red together (reminds me of an 80s prom), but I think the photo is awesome. 🙂

    I love this collection!

I bought Fauve but am not thrilled with it. While the quads are really pretty, I can’t see myself wearing purples and blues though.

So, I’m left with the Inimitable Intense mascara (love), and I’m considering the curler. But not really sure that it’s worth $12 more than my 24k golden Shu :/

Hi Karen! I must say your blog is lovely! I’m from Brazil, and your blog is very famous here. I’m so in love with chanel, their lipsticks, inimitable, and foundation (pro lumiere) are my favorites, but got kind of disapointed with eyeshadows! i’ve got the last palette from fall (that one with purple, blue, green metalics and darks, you wrote about that) and i really dont like, they’re so weak in pigmentation! These one are ok? I ask cause i love the purple tones!
