Burberry Beauty: An Interview with Christopher Bailey, Chief Creative Director

July 16th, 2010 by Karen 32 Comments

Burberry Beauty officially launched last Tuesday at the San Francisco Nordie’s store, and I popped by to check out the new makeup line and to chat with Christopher Bailey, Burberry’s chief creative director (and quite possibly one of the most polite and well-dressed dudes I’ve ever met).

Here are some images of the new line and product swatches to go with the video above.

Burberry Sheer Eyeshadows, $29 each

Burberry Beauty Sheer Eyeshadow swatches on NC35 skin: 1. Pure White, 2. Chestnut, 3. Trench, 4. Almond, 5. Porcelain, 6. Taupe Brown, 7. Gold Trench, 8. Khaki

Burberry Beauty Sheer Eyeshadow swatches on NC35 skin: 1. Rosewood, 2. Lavender Blue, 3. Pearl Grey, 4. Antique Rose, 5. Lavender, 6. Midnight Black

Burberry Beauty Sheer Eyeshadow swatches on NC35 skin: 1. Tea Rose, 2. Slate Blue, 3. Midnight Plum, 4. Pale Rose, 5. Pearl Blue, 6. Midnight Blue

Burberry Natural Blushes, $42 each

Burberry Natural Bronzer, $48 each

Burberry Lip Glow Natural Lip Glosses, $27 each

Burberry Soft Satin Lipsticks, $30 each

Pretty expensive line, but I do like what I’ve seen so far…

So did you go out tonight? Are you reading this on your phone from the dance floor at the clooob? 🙂

I’m doing what has become a Friday ritual for me lately — nada! The highlight of my evening was playing with Tabs and his toy mouse tied to a string. Look out, world!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

The designs of the lipsticks are beautiful! I was at a Burberry Outlet today and I was hoping that they would have the make up in there, but sadly, there was none.

I’m so excited about these shadows! I ordrered Antique Rose for dear daughter and Gold Trench for me. I’m hoping to get more; they look lovely, classy, and luxurious.

Watched the last 2 episodes of Season 3 of “Mission-Impossible” on DVD. Seasons 1 and 2 were better.

Yeah, he tried to get away with saying “all different skin types” (meaning undertones I think) to seem more universal but they are all pale girls, which is bothersome to me.

i agree. but what appeases me a bit is that he mentioned building onto the current collection with products that will be more suited different skins. hopefully he means skinTONE and not skinTYPE :p. i guess we’ll just have to wait and see. 🙂

Products look like a great start from the swatches- I hope they really do include all skin tones, unlike other high end department brands, and I look forward to seeing the line grow and develop. I think as a new line there should be some palettes to get people into it – or maybe have a WOW product to draw you in.
Great start – wasnt all that impressed

he really does seem down to earth and normal; unusual for the fashion industry. great interview, karen. and i agree with everyone else, when he says there is a diversity of skin tones, you really don’t see it in the ad campaign. why didn’t they have darker skinned gal?

Expensive collection but it’s to be expected from a high end brand like Burberry. Would love to own one of their trench coats one day…and if had to pick 1 thing from the makeup line I’d splurge on a lipstick!

‘The philosophy of a trenchcoat’? I get what he’s saying, but it still struck me as a little silly. The three ‘totally different’ models thing made my jaw drop. Also enjoyed the non-answer about using ‘feel’ instead of technology.

Your questions were great but his answers were ridic and did nothing to convince me to think about spending $30 on an eyeshadow. I realize he has to promote the PR points when he talks to media, but geez.

I must have woken up on the cynical side of the bed today. 😉

a good point…. the philosophy of a trenchcoat is to keep world war one soldiers gangrene free in the trenches i.e. not glamorous. this librarian does not approve.

I ordered an eyeshadow (Almond) and a lipstick (Rosewood) from Nordstrom that came yesterday. The packaging is gorgeous and I love the products. The shadow is SO smooth and I might even get another of the lipsticks…after I can see more swatches!

Okay, sold I’ll have to check out the colors in person. So far, I spy two shadows that look like great everyday shadows. Also, the blush looks worth checking out.

I love the interview, and you look great in the pearls, Karen. About the product line … hmmm, I’m not sure what to make of it. There’s very little for women of color (despite Bailey’s insistence that there is). I would definitely wait to see more reviews of their lipsticks and lip glosses before I make the jump from my Chanel Rouge Allures to this. But your interview was great and you asked some pretty important questions.
