These New NYX Xtreme Lip Creams Have an Xtremely Interesting Flavor and Scent

December 7th, 2011 by Karen 58 Comments

NYX Xtreme Lip Cream 01 Dolly Girl
NYX Xtreme Lip Cream in 01 Dolly Girl

Things that go well together…

  • Olive oil and balsamic vinegar
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Chocolate and peanut butter
  • Music and workouts
  • Manis and pedis
  • Ryan Gosling and shirtless-ness (that’s not a word…)
  • Dirty Dancing and Clueless, watched back-to-back with a tub of ice cream (gawd, I’m turning into a Cathy comic)
  • Kittens and baskets 🙂

And things that don’t go well together…

  • The words “discount” and “plastic surgery”
  • Wet socks and jogging
  • Cosmopolitans and empty stomachs
  • Blind dates and Craigslist
  • The Twilight movies and Academy Awards
  • Shrunken pants and Harvard interviews
  • Lip products and the scents of plastic and butter…

Yes, plastic and butter.

Yeegh!

The thought of those together makes my tummy churn, and unfortunately, it’s the way I think the new NYX Xtreme Lip Creams taste and smell. Even so, the list of things I like about these liquid lipgloss/lipstick hybrids almost outweighs their flavor and scent.

They’re highly pigmented, smooth, non-sticky, come with an easy-to-use doe-foot applicator, are available in a wide variety of bright and nudes shades, and sell for a reasonable $6 each. They also last about five hours on my lips, which isn’t half bad for something as lightweight and glossy as these. Plus, on top of all that, I don’t find them drying at all.

With these, as long as I hold my nose, we’re good to go. 🙂

Lip swatches and pics

I tried something a little different for the eye look I’m wearing here, and I’m not 100 percent sure I like the way it turned out…

That’s the Guerlain Ecrin 4 Couleurs quad in Les Roses ($59) on my eyes. It’s from the spring 2012 collection coming in January to select Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Sephora, Bloomingdales and Bergdorf Goodman stores.

I think the combination of hot pink in the crease and purple in the outer corners of my eyes looks okay in person, but here in these pics it kinda looks like I got into a fight.

Hmm… Well, if nothing else, it was fun to try something new.

As much as I love how these lippies look and feel, I’m having a tough time digesting the way they taste and smell (eau de plastic and butter). Thankfully, the scent fades after about a minute, but the flavor lingers much longer than that — long enough to trigger my gag reflex once or twice.

I know a lot of ladies who love NYX lip products and don’t mind their flavors and scents. Because of that, I encourage you to give these a try, because if you find that you don’t mind the way they smell or taste, you are in luck! I think these have many great things going for ’em, and if NYX decides to release an unflavored, unscented version, I’d be all over that.

PRICE: $6 each
AVAILABILITY: Available now at drugstores, beauty stores and also online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B (a solid A if not for their flavor and scent)

Karen

      Hi Amanda,

I have a sensitive nose/sense of taste so hopefully it’s more butter than plastic for you! Have you tried NYX lip products before? They’re so gorgeous but have such a strong scent.

I’ve tried lip products with a plasticky scent, but butter? On top of that, plastic AND butter? That’s just really unfortunate. That’s unfortunate, because Buttery Nude and Absolute Red are so gorgeous.

    p.s.
Balsamic vinegar with olive oil is the best combo ever!

The Guerlain shades look sweetly elegant on you. On me: bunny eyes!

I cannot stand most scented lip products. Had to return a lovely Burberry lipstick because of the fragrance. I guess the lips are too close to the nose for me to ignore the “scent.” Skin Tone and Natural look tempting though!

Blind dates and Craigslist — I know someone who needs that piece of advice.

Is it just the lip creams with the butter/plastic smell? I just bought a bunch of nyx round lipsticks but I didn’t smell anything odd.

      Hi Chanel,

Their Mega Shine glosses have a very strong scent too:

So do their Soft Matte Lip Creams. It’s not synthetic or plasticy though, which is a plus!

I was laughing enough to warrant hubby asking what you wrote. “Ryan Gosling and shirtless-ness (that’s not a word)” lol “Twilight movies and Academy Awards” LMAO! Anyhoo, I have a love/hate relationship with NYX. I have a lot of their glosses and eyeshadows BUT, I’m not sure I will pick these up. I have a couple of the soft matte lipcreams. While the smell and taste didn’t bother me, the drying factor did (as does NYX customer service and business practices). I’m intrigued that you said these aren’t drying – and I think “natural” is a beautiful color – but I’m not sure I will buy any. I just don’t know. I value my time and money, not quite sure NYX does. Most of these were really pretty though, nice swatches Karen 🙂

Oh! So, I’ve been listening to a new album that I think you might like. It’s called Who You Are and it’s by a singer named Jessie J. Here’s my favorite song:

I’ve been seeing Jesse J. on various television shows lately and I really like her style, musically and visually. Lately I’m all about cranking the holiday music. Annie Lennox’s Christmas release from last year is THE TRUTH!

Years ago a MAC makeup artist did a makeup look on me that incorporated Sushi Flower shadow on me, and managed to make it look really pretty and not like I’m suffering from some dreaded disease. And as you know, Sushi Flower is some SERIOUS pink!

And the eye look is hot! I think I can make a look like that from things in my stash. Purple and pink! Always the greatest combo. And I just might wear a similar look to my daughter’s first Christmas play this evening!

Are these replacing the previous line of Xtreme Lip Creams, or being added to them? I’m confused just because recently, my local drug stores started removing the Xtreme Lip Creams, and these new ones seem to really resemble the old line (“Absolute Red” looks like “Amsterdam,” “Natural” looks like “Tokyo,” etc).

Although, for $6, I might have to suck it up an give them a try!

Ooooooo! The colors are absolutely amazing! The thing about online shopping is you don’t get to play around with the product and test the scent. As we don’t get NYX in Malaysia, it’s usually online shopping for us! I’ve purchased a lipstick with an awful scent before and definitely not liking it; smells like the scent you smell in most toilets…
