Rimmel Volume Flash Max Bold Curves Mascara Is Such a Tease

Published in: Drugstore Beauty Finds, Makeup, Product Reviews

rimmel volume flash max bold curves review

When I heard that Rimmel designed Volume Flash Max Bold Curves mascara ($7) to boost lash volume by 1,400% (OOH!) and lift by 70% (ahh…), it was like teasing a dog with a piece of bacon.

Shauna the Wonderdog!

Released earlier this summer in a single shade called Black, Volume Flash Max Bold Curves sports a fancy-shmancy brush built with something called “Perfect Fit technology.”

LOL! It seems like every week there’s a new phrase being coined. Perfect Fit’s flexible bristles were shaped to fit lashes perfectly and coat them for maximum lift and volume, and the mascara’s formula, enriched with keratin and collagen, strengthens lashes, getting them ready for serious volume-boosting action.

I gave the waterproof version of Max Volume Flash a try last week, and while it didn’t pump up the volume of my lashes as much as I’d hoped it would, I kept my fingers crossed for Bold Curves. “Please,” I prayed to the makeup gods, “deliver me the tranny lashes I desire so very much.”

Come on, what do ya say?

Well, my prayers went partially answered. I mean, I detect a difference in length and thickness as well as above-average lash lift, and the formula does hold up nicely throughout day, resisting smudges and flaking…

But the volume’s nothing to write home about, and certainly not what I expected based on Rimmel’s epic claims. :(

After two layers of the stuff, my lashes start to look kinda droopy (shoot!). They also stick together like the mean girls on Project Runway when they went after Michael C.

I do like Max Bold’s price and chipper lime green packaging, and I think it would work well for budget-lurving lasses looking for a basic one-coat mascara for a bit of extra length, volume, definition and lift. Available at drugstores and now at ulta.com. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B

You might like Rimmel Volume Flash Max Bold Curves if…

  • You’re not looking for much more than a slight increase in lash volume, length and definition
  • You dig drugstore products and prices
  • You aren’t looking for anything too dramatic

The Return of Shauna the Wonderdog

I know it’s been a while since Shauna’s made an appearance on the blog, but Tabs decided to share the limelight today. Shauna lives with my parents in the East Bay, and if you couldn’t tell, she happens to be an aspiring camera hound. :)

My dad found Shauna many years ago when she was just a pup at an adoption faire in front of a Pet Smart.

She’s still (and always will be) my number one pup.

Do you have a dog? What’s he/she like?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

She used to be mine, but I couldn’t take her with me when I moved out to San Francisco. Now she’s technically my dad’s dog, but in my mind she’ll always be my pup.

  4. Ashley says:

Ahh I asked in one of your previous Rimmel reviews recently if Rimmel still tests on animals but I got no reply. So does anyone know if that’s true or not??

In the Netherlands, the use of comma’s and full stops in numbers is the other way around, so I thought; 1.4%?! That’s not a good number for marketing!

  7. Traci says:

I think the pic with just one coat of mascara looks the best! I’m using the max volume flash one right now and I kinda like it. Not great, but better than some. I feel like i am always on a never-ending quest to find mascara!
I have 2 mini dachshunds and they r spoiled rotten! Your Shauna looks like such a sweet dog! Good for your parents adopting!

  8. Jen says:

    1400%, really? That’s a bold claim.

I have a Tibetan Spaniel named Pocky and she’s a ten pound terror. Or she thinks she is. She’s sassy, but lovable. I heart her.

  9. ShanaT says:

Hi Karen! Shuana is so cute! I have two adopted dogs, a cream colored Daschund and a Taiwanese Tu Gou with a short tail. The little Daschund bosses the bigger one around but they sleep snuggled up together at night. It’s hard to believe that someone just abandoned them. Oh and this is off topic but did you finish Mocking Jay yet? Just curious to know what you thought….

    • Karen says:

      Hi Shana,

I’m almost done with Mockingjay! I should be finished either tonight or tomorrow.

Should I keep some Kleenex nearby? I have a feeling it’s going to have one of those endings that isn’t going to be happy.

Aww.. Shauna looks so friendly! how’d your dad decide to give him that name?

I just created a face book account for my dog last night… (i know, its crazy right?) so many of my friends were asking how he was doing. He’s a shih tzu and he is always waiting by the door for me to come home. Then he goes into this hyper happy mood — my friends think he may have a heart attack! i luv him to pieces!

you should create a fb account for tabs too! then he and koffee can be friend. ;P

    • Karen says:

LOL, that’s not crazy! Now you need to put Koffee on twitter!

Shauna’s named after a song! I can’t remember the name of it, but there’s a part that goes “Sha-na-na-na-na…”

  11. gio says:

Thanks for the review. I think the mascara looks lovely on you but I prefer mascaras that give a more dramatic effect so I’ll pass on this.

    Aww Shauna is so cute!

Aghh.. I like it after 1 layer -your lashes look the longest there.

LOL about Gretchen and Ivy -can’t stand them!! And Ivy is so mean. =(

  13. Kayann says:

I love the green color! I’ve tried Falsies (maybelline?) I like it but doesn’t make it look like I’m wearing falsies! :(
My dog is crazy, a chihuahua. He has Napoleon syndrome… It’s very sad but obviously funny!

  14. Nina says:

    Shauna is adorable!

So this mascara aint half bad huh? I havent broken it out yet but I prolly will soon. Im chucking some mascaras out this weekend as they are past the three month mark!

  15. Marion Shaw says:

Great site, Let’s face it, it’s all in the brush. I really want to try that vibrating brush thing!

  16. Kim says:

Shauna looks so sweet (and way to go, Dad, on the adoption!). :)

I definitely smiled at the 1400% claim and it looks like a bad clumper, as you said. On the upside I REALLY like how you’ve arranged the pics of the 4 phases in a square so there’s no scrolling up and down. Awesome idea. :)

Also, I don’t know if this makes anyone else laugh, and I know it’s not meant to be funny, but I just giggle every time I read “it’s available in one color, called Black”. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by so many clever color names!

    • Karen says:

My dad was ALWAYS bringing home random animals when we were growing up. At one point in time we had cats, a bird, a bunny, some mice and fish… it was like living in a zoo!

      • Kim says:

That’s really great; the world would be a better place if more people were so goodhearted. And luckily for Tabs, your Dad passed that on to you! :)

  17. Tracy says:

I didn’t like this mascara either and I usually love Rimmel mascaras. I was expecting mega volume-not so much. I love it when dogs have people names! I know someone who has a dog named Todd. :)

Shuana is soooo cute! My dog Connor is a mutt- we got him from the Humane Society, we don’t even know exactly the breeds he consists of, we just kind of speculate. He’s my little (and by little I mean 50 pounds lol) duckling, he follows me everywhere :) Yay puppy love!

  21. Kate & Zena says:

    Shauna is soooooooooooooooooooo cute.

Of course, she’ll never beat Zena in my eyes. I’m very Zena biased!

That brush is GINORMOUS. I am noooooooooot a fan of huge mascara brushes.

    • Karen says:

      Zena’s a supastar! :)

You would probably love Shauna if you met her. She’s very friendly and charming.

      • Kate & Zena says:

She looks like she charms people when they meet her (kinda like a certain terrier I know). I think training Zena is so much fun because she is a people charmer.

Speaking of Zena, her new trick this season is “dead.” As in, she lies on her side, feet straight out, head flat on the floor, shallow breathing kind of dead. You’d mistake her for dead if not for two things: the breathing and the fierce eye staring very intently at the food.

I need to find a way to hold the treat, the hand signal and take a picture all at the same time because it’s endlessly amusing. At the top I should write: How Zena Earns Income.

        • Karen says:

HA HA HA! At least she’s earning her keep!

Maybe set the camera on a timer first, and then prop it on top of a table or something to act as an improv tripod before pressing the shutter (just make sure she’s in the shot)? It might take a few tries, but if she’s very food motivated I bet you could do it.

  22. Stacey says:

I just want a waterproof mascara that doesnt make me look like a raccoon at the end of the day….must be my own chemistry or somthing, but I’ve been thru a zillion mascaras and they all do this.

Shauna’s a cutie pie! I have a long haired chihuahua named Giggy (short for Fizzgig). He was supposed to be my little Paris HIlton, purse dog. Evidently, there’s something else in the mix because he’s reached his full size at 12 lbs! Oh well. I love him and he’s a sweetie and so smart!

  23. Instant Karma (formerly L) says:

    Awww, Shauna!

Also, LOL Gretchen and Ivy! Oh man, I was so disappointed last night. I mean, I love Mondo, and I was so happy that he won, but my heart sank a bit when I saw Michael D, Valerie and Andy in the bottom three. I adore all of them!

  24. I loooooove the BACON craving pic!!!! LOOOL hilarious!!! :)
