Peanut Butter and Jelly, Meet Black Liner and Red Lipstick (Another Power Couple): The New Hourglass Icon Collection and Film Noir Kohl Eye Pencil in Eclipse

October 30th, 2012 by Karen 35 Comments

hourglass icon and eclipse
Wearing the new Hourglass Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss in Icon and Film Nor Kohl Eye Pencil in Eclipse, and thinking about a PB&J sandwich…

The six or seven (no kidding) peanut butter and jelly sandwiches I ate last week got me thinking about other great pairings, like Bogie and Bacall, Hall and Oats, Nutella and anything, and red lips and black liner…

Red lips and black liner — a quick and easy, everyday combo that always hits the spot (much like, in my case, creamy peanut butter and raspberry jelly sandwiches on super soft, fresh bread).

But woman cannot live on sandwiches alone. No, this one also needs makeup! Like these pieces from the new Hourglass holiday collection — four long-wearing, blueish red lip products in a shade called Icon ($28-30 each), and a black pencil liner called Eclipse (the $28 Film Noir Kohl Eye Pencil in Eclipse, which is also available in a brown called Espresso).

Altogether, they’re like comfort food (but for your face). 🙂

Seriously, I bet these would still be posing prettily on my lips after a PB&J. They are expensive — like YSL/Chanel/Dior expensive — but Hourglass went full tilt on the pigment with each of these universally flattering shades while, thankfully, leaving out any funky flavors and scents. With lots of lush, elegant finishes to choose from, there’s something here for every occasion, and I don’t think you could go wrong with any of ’em. The prices are probably the biggest caveats.
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A (so spendy!)

Film Noir Kohl Eye Pencil in Eclipse

Hello, lovah! Eclipse reminds me of a longer lasting MAC Feline. It’s so soft, smudgy, dark and shockingly long-lasting on my water lines that I can hardly believe it’s real! It’s a makeup quadruple threat, and Hourglass even included a classy, little extra — a convenient pencil sharpener in the cap.

Move over, Bobbi Brown Jet! — ’cause I think I just found my new favorite black liner. 🙂
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A+ (like a real eclipse, this one’s a rare find)

HOLY COW–that Extreme Sheen High-Shine Lip Gloss in Icon is SERIOUSLY pigmented! Did you layer it over the pencil, Karen? Because it’s SHOCKINGLY opaque. Like whoa! It’s so serious right now that I am TOTALLY craving it and I DON’T WEAR RED LIPS!!!

It’s typical Hourglass prices, but I have to say…almost everything I’ve tried from them is tops.

Nice! Are you going as the version of her at the end? Trivia fun fact: they had to sew Olivia Newton-John’s pants on for that scene!

I have a serious ‘red lips’ problem (in that I buy no other colours, and have far too many reds to choose from.) I don’t care. These are gorgeous and I want them to join my collection.

Do you have to hide your stash from Tabs? My cats like to chew my brushes, and bat around any small containers (like cream eyeshadows, nail polish, etc.) Never mind what the dogs do when anything gets dropped!

      Hi Jenny,

I’m lucky in that Tabs has no interest in playing with my makeup. He enjoys having his face and cheeks brushed with an eye or blush brush now and then, but he won’t go out of his way to mess with them. You know what he loves? Eye glasses! It’s the weirdest thing.

    Karen –

Gorgeous gloss in the top look! What’s the texture of it? Is it sticky like MAC’s glosses and how did it wear down?
