Have you had a chance to check out Shu Uemura’s new Rouge Unlimited Supreme lipsticks ($30 each)?

There are 14 of them in all, each one of the gloss-in-lipstick’s clothing variety — meaning that they feel like lipsticks on the lips but shine like a gloss.

Shu claims their exclusive color technology (get ready to be blinded with fancy talk!) of hybrid pigments, film-keeping capsules and ultra-shine oils makes them more intensely pigmented than similar offerings from other brands.

I’ve tried three of the shades so far and have to agree. The colors do seem a little more vibrant than those of the other lipstick/gloss hybrids I’ve tried from Prescriptives (RIP!), MAC and Avon.

But does the difference justify the price?

Pros

  • Medium-weight texture feels smooth and non-sticky
  • Scent- and flavor-free
  • Hydrating formula doesn’t dry out my lips
  • Slim, sleek packaging

Cons

  • Quite expensive at $30 a tube
  • About a two-hour wear time (NOTE: I have a bad habit of rubbing and smacking my lips together, so they may last longer for you)
  • Numerical color naming system not the easiest to remember

Big ups for the intense color and shine of these hybrids, but I’d like ‘em WAY more if they were less expensive and lasted a little longer than they do. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

P.S. How was your hump day? :) What happened at school/work? I’m bummed about missing the series premiere of V last night… Did you watch it? What did you think? I need my sci-fi fix.

Oh the first one looks so pretty!

Have you tried Laura Mercier’s stickglosses though? They’re basically the same concept except that the stickglosses are THE most hydrating and conditioning lipsticks I’ve ever worn, easily beating out most of my hydrating lip treatments (including Korres lip butters and the Yes to Carrots balms); last 4-6 hours on me, depending on color; are sheer, but easily layerable to full color; and only cost $20 a pop! Sephora only has 4 colors, unfortunately, but Nordie’s carries the full line. I discovered them recently and now I have 4 that I rotate basically every day! I highly recommend Cranberry and Poppy as very pretty wearable reds. =)

They all look so moisturizing (and sheer) like a balm…Anyway, I like the packaging of their normal lipsticks better though.

P.S. It might last even shorter on me since I have a habit of munching stuff all the time and the first thing I do before s snacking is wipe off anything on my mouth…

  3. Hmmm, these are worth a glance the next time I see a Shu counter…

I still prefer lipstick and gloss, but I do like the convenience factor!

Hmmm, it seems like your camera is making all your pictures of products look really pink lately. Especially this one and the Lorac palette from earlier. I mean, all these look pink on you, but only one is actually pink, right?

  6. Kate & Zena says:

Some of these are pretty, but I’ve definitely seen glosses/lipsticks that are more pigmented at my local Jewel Osco.

My Wednesday was kinda ‘blah.’ I didn’t get the chance to work on my Social Psychology midterm which I should get my butt in gear and do as I can’t ask for ANOTHER extension, wrist pain or no wrist pain.

I did, however, see my doctor for said pain (finally). She ordered a round of X-Rays and sent me a referral to a hand & wrist specialist to figure out what this is as even she can’t figure it out. She hasn’t ruled out CTS but she wants the specialist to run a certain test (that I’m not looking forward to due to the name alone) and then send me to PT if he suggests it as well. She also ordered a round of Prednisone to see if it decreases the pain.

But, I pretty much spent my day on Cloud 9 as Zena won Pet of the Month on wht. Yay!!! Zena spent yesterday and today prancing about the house like an empress. If she weren’t prancing, she was demanding cuddles. Good thing I have injured hands so my mom did 70% of the pets and I got 80% of the cuddles. :) I foresee Zena getting a crown for Christmas so she can really go around calling her Empress Z.

Y’know what I’m bummed about? No House. These past two weeks the schedule ORIGINALLY says there’ll be a new House on, only to find as BASEBALL game is on Fox during MY HOUSE TIME. *screams* I know you’re a SYTYCD fan, but believe me when I say I was close to killing your television show producers and what not when it was aired during House time. I tolerate Mondays so at 7 central (I think that’s 5 PM Western Time) I can see House. If one more baseball game or SYTYCD show comes on during my House time, Fox will be receiving a very, very long letter that basically says, “If you do not air House, I WILL KILL YOU” a la Ratatouille from my mom, Zena and me, only mine will be polite for the most part.

  7. Hyzenthlay says:

Eh, I don’t know that those colors and that wear time justify the cost.

I’ve had an all right day – I joined the “dirty thirties” club as you called it, Karen, which has been nice :)

But I’m having some issues with parents and the administration at my school, so I’ve been really stressed out since yesterday.

I am looking forward to getting my Sephora F&F package tomorrow: I ordered two Korres Cherry lipsticks (red and rose, I think), plus some other fun things.

The Urban Decay sale better come soon, there’s A TON that I want from there, now that I have gotten MUCH better at using their liquid liner!

  8. Doreen says:

Wow, the pigmentation does seem pretty good for a gloss/lipstick hybrid, but you’re right about the price! And, well, I kinda like sheer gloss/lipsticks anyway. My fave is the L’Oreal Colour Juice Stick, which is decently pigmented and has a nice dewy shine.

Mmm, I’ve been alright today, except I woke up at 10am this morning and slept through my first class! Oh well. Apparently I didn’t miss out on TOO much…

By the way, do you have a disclosure statement for your product reviews? I’m just curious, and you may have talked about it before, so I might have missed it…

  9. Glosslizard says:

    Haaayyy! Happy Wednesday!

Not too impressed with the lippies this time (I like more pigmentation), at least not $30 worth of impressed!

My day was so tiring, but good! I heard excellent things about V from Hubby, who was bullied into watching it with the imps (heh). Impus Major (8 years old) declared it “awesome”! I was at aikido making up for training time lost while sick, and I won’t be able to catch it Tuesday nights (boo!) so I’m already hoping it’ll come out on DVD! I still remember the original V, I loved it right up until the schmaltzy ending wrecked it! ;)

  10. Rae says:

I saw half of V and had to tape the other half : ) It looked pretty good! (Except for the boy. You’ll know who I’m talking about if you watch it — the one with the super-lopsided smirk. Do not like.)

Anyhow; not loving the short wear time or price tag (ouch!) but I think I’ll have to hunt down a 185 dupe. Pretty!)

I have yet to venture in the world of Shu Uemura’s makeup, though I have tried their lashes. My favourite is number 185, but still seem to look like a glaze to me. I can’t really compare lipstick./lipgloss hybrids because the only one I tried is Chanel Rouge Allure Lacque and those are quite pigmented and with sheen. I do really like Shu Uemura’s packaging because they are modern and sleek.

  12. Megan **** says:

$30 each? Ugh, that’s no bueno :( But I don’t think I can resist. They look so glossy, yet they look like they apply thin. That’s a MUST HAVE! I’m terrible at keeping any lip color on for long periods of time anyway. I’m just disappointed at the fact that for each one of those lipsticks, I could be gettin two from my beloved MAC.. Ha! Oh well..

  13. gio says:

Number 185 looks gorgeous but the price is too high, esp if these don’t last long.

  14. Toni says:

Karen, love the first one pictured, but $30 is waaaaay too much for me to pay for a lipstick/gloss hybrid. I think my hubby would have a cow if I spent that much! I am still waiting for my Sephora F&F package to come with my Laura Mercier lip glosses, and I prefer glosses to lipsticks anyway, so I would have to pass on the Shu Uemura.

Catherine,(from the first post above), I will have to look for those stickglosses next time I go to Nordstrom or Sephora. Thanks for sharing that! I discovered the Laura Mercier lip gloss after receiving a sample at Nordstrom and fell in love with it!

My hump day started out not so good. My son has autism, and he had a melt down of epic proportions before school, but the day did get better. He had fun with a LUSH Mr. Butterball bath bomb in the tub (we’re trying the Ma Bar bubble bar tonight!), put on his p.j.’s and had a snack of cinammon cookies and snuggled with me on the sofa. Love my snuggle time with my little man!

  15. alice says:

I didn’t like these. The colors are nice, but they fade within an hour on me. And I hate the new packaging. Shu’s regular line of lipsticks are much nicer. Definitely not worth $30.

  16. Kristen says:

Although I love Shu’s products, these colors just don’t look wearable enough.

I love shu, and these are super pretty on you, but yeah, $30 it a lot for what they are.

I LOVED V!!! you must go find it online and watch. We’re (me and hubby) hooked.

That first one (RD 185) is so gorgeous! The other two are pretty too. I love how glossy they all are!
    However…
    Pretty? Yes.
    Worth $30? Not so much.
