Does the New NYX Eyebrow Marker Score High Marks?

November 16th, 2010 by Karen 35 Comments

karen of makeup and beauty blog reviews the nyx eyebrow marker
Wearing NYX Eyebrow Marker in Deep

“NYX wants to mark their territory on your eyebrows…”

Wait, did I really just write that? 🙂

Ouch! Okay, let’s try that again. How about, “Does NYX deserve high marks for their new Eyebrow Marker ($9.75)”?

Available in two shades — Medium (a light brown) and Deep (a medium brown) — the new felt-tip pen lives to fill in sparse eyebrows with a liquid/ink that dries to a matte finish.

Since I have dark hair, I went with the Deep shade, but after the first time I brought it to my brows, I almost set it right back down. Why? Because it’s so sheer — like surprisingly sheer.

Thankfully, it layers well, getting progressively darker with each one. For me, four layers results in a shade that pretty closely matches the color of my hair.

NYX bills Eyebrow Marker as a long-wearing product, and I’ll go along with that, although I wouldn’t wear it to a spinning class. Overall, I think it holds up fairly well under normal conditions and very light sweating (NOTE: it turns slightly gray as it fades), especially if multiple layers are used.

Once it’s dry, it doesn’t smear at all, and I rubbed at it pretty well to test. When it comes time to remove, a little soap and water does the trick.

Now that Eyebrow Marker and I have gotten to know each other, we probably won’t hang out every day. Don’t laugh :), but for the life of me I can’t evenly fill in my left eyebrow with it. Doing my right brow is easy enough (maybe because I’m right handed), but the left is a different story — and it’s an awkward, uncomfortable tale. If you’re more coordinated than I am, and there’s a good chance you are, you’ll probably have better luck with it than I did. Or perhaps if you have better penmanship, LOL!

Of course, I love the convenience of pen products, but, for some reason, this one and I don’t really get along. If you’re a fan of the $16.50 MAC Penultimate Brow Marker, this is a similar brow pen for a little more than half the cost.

PRICE: $9.75
AVAILABILITY: At select drugstores, Ulta stores and online.

WED, NOV. 17: The Thanksgiving Recipe Exchange Is On!

WOOT! My tummy just rumbled. 🙂 Tomorrow I’ll put up a post so that we can trade our recipes in the comments. That gives me some time to track down the recipe to my world famous (well, not really) Italian Cream Cake, haha!

NOTE: Your recipe/s DOES NOT have to be fancy; this is a stress-free project. Sound good?

      Hi Nina,

Do you have trubs with one brow versus the other? I’m starting to think I need to be in a “School for the Gifted” (remember that Farside cartoon?) for makeup addicts, LL!

How are you liking the Penultimate? What’s the color like? Renata (one of the commenters) below wanted to know if the color has any gray in it…

I have a scar in my left eyebrow from a childhood accident and that means my hair doesn’t grow in one spot, and it grows in thicker in another spot in that brow. I tend to be able to do my right brow just fine but I have to sort of… not try to compensate for the bald spot when I’m filling in my left brow.

Especially right now since I’m rockin’ the midnight blue and aqua hair, I prefer my brows to be black. I tried a brunette brow pencil by Laura Mercier (their darkest one) and it looked too brown. I filled my brows in with UD’s 24/7 in Zero and loved the results. I just got another brow pencil in Soft Black from Avon and tried that today, and I don’t think it looks bad, maybe just a touch too warm.

And I definitely have a recipe to share 🙂

      Hi Phyrra,

That’s cool that you were able to repurpose your 24/7 liner as a brow pencil! I bet the MAC Technakohl in Graphblack would work well too, especially if you want a soft brow look.

Loving your Pendant karen…Yet to read the post though…but I had to compliment first….I saw a similar pendant at my local TJMaxx. It reminded me of Carrie Bradshaw…her Chahan pendant…:)

What do you think of the brow product? Are you into markers?

Your brows do look lovely with this! This reminds me of the Anastasia one that’s out there.

      Hi Tracy,

      YAY, zombie time!

I totally knew he was gonna hack his hand off so I wasn’t surprised. What did you think of the scene at the lake with the women doing the wash? That was really intense.

It was pretty intense and frightening. I really like how they’re showing how difficult it would be to all of a sudden be slammed together to live with a diverse bunch of people and try to get along.

I’m horrible at filling my left brow too. Just because of that I’ve gone days without filling my brows at all, as they seemed more equal without me attempting to tame them, lol.

      Hi Nina,

On those days you want to skip filling in your brows the NYX Eyebrow Tamer might come in handy. It’s a colorless product!

I don’t think I’ll be trying this, but I do think it could be a great tool for a retro 40s look. Between the hair and the brows, I definitely get a pinup vibe from the first photo!

LOL! I’m like that too. I use MUFE Brow Corrector which is a cream. The right eyebrow usually comes out good but I almost always have problems with the left brow! Never really noticed until you pointed it out.

      Hi Kali,

I recently figured this out, and that’s only because I tilted my chin up on accident and noticed that I wasn’t filling in my left brow as far in as my right. All these years I’ve been walking around with one short brow, hahah! What are ya gonna do, sigh.

I’d be a little nervous about using a marker because I’d be afraid of going too dark, but since this goes on sheer that might not be a problem.

Luckily, I don’t need to fill in my brows too much. I’m using a brow powder from Ardell that I found at CVS a while back. I only use a little bit, so it’s lasted a long time. Next time I need a brow filler, I might check this out!

I’ve heard Ardell makes some good, affordable things! Have you ever tried their false lashes? They’re supposed to be great.

I’m amazed by how many of us have brow scars! I’m also much better with one eyebrow vs. the other. On a side note, I can’t help but think “Sharpie” when I see this product. 🙂 It did do a really good job on your brows, though. I think both shades would be too dark for me, and I’m a little put off by the “graying as it dries”. Thanks for reviewing though; it’s definitely interesting!

Mine is a chicken pock scar at the bottom, inside of my left brow. I still remember my mother telling me not to scratch them, but when you’re 8, you couldn’t care less about getting scars on your face. At least, I couldn’t have.

Funnily enough, when we talked about braces when I was young, I remember saying “I don’t care if my teeth are perfect; it’s not like I would want to be a model or anything”. Ah, youth. Since then, we’ve spent lots of money getting my teeth closer to perfect! 🙂
