Published in: Nails

“This season, I wanted to create a new set of classic, yet fun colors that are wearable on every skin tone.” – Essie Weingarten, Founder and President

YOU GO, E-Money, with your “I’m every woman” approach to nail color.

The shades in Essie’s Sweet Time of the Year Collection for Winter 2009 ($8 each) should flatter a rainbow of skin tones and appeal to a range of colorful personalities.

Which ones suit you?

  • Classic dames: If pearls, little black dresses and patent leather pumps speak to your soul, then try two rich coats of Lollipop, a creamy, candy-apple red.
  • Trendy types: Do you like life on the edge? Take a bite out of creamy Mint Candy Apple. Go for three layers with a base coat to avoid streaks.
  • Subtly sassy: A whisper of sheer, creamy pink’s just *so* quintessentially Essie. Wear Rock Candy when you’re in the mood for a dash of color. Try two coats for blinding shine with a hint of pink.

Do you like your colors buffet-style instead (YES!)? If so, consider the Sweet Time of the Year Winter Collection Mini Set ($17).

Each one combines three sample-size Winter 2009 shades with a mini-bottle of Essie Three Way Glaze, an all-in-one base, strengthener and top coat.

Is mint green the new black?

I wouldn’t be surprised to see more pastel green polishes pop up over the next few months. Remember Chanel Jade? My spider sense detects a new colour du jour…

What say you? Do you likey what Essie’s been up to?

New Yoooork

Somebody, stop me before I play Jay-Z’s Empire of the State again. I’m hooked.

It’s his latest ode to New York.

I’ve had it on repeat for … a while. Maybe it’s the West Coast girl in me, but I feel a little guilty for loving it so much. :)

What have you been listening to lately?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I think Mint Candy Green is calling my name! Essie 3 Way Glaze is an excellent base and top coat along with being a pretty good nail conditioner.

I love these! I could totally see wearing all three of these colors :)

  3. Jacks says:

I am ALL OVER that green one. I’m such a sucker for anything mint green! Can’t wait ’til these come out.

Hope you’re having a wonderful Wednesday, Karen :)

I really like the Lollipop! The Rock Candy isn’t rockin’ my boat. Although I like the Mint Candy Apple, I think I like the Chanel Jade better. Just went to Ulta today and got 3 OPI colors (OPI Red, Siberian Nights, and Black Onyx), so I don’t think I can get anymore nail polishes anytime soon!

    Hi Jacks,

My Wednesday was good! I have to run a few errands tonight, but I plan on rewarding myself with some Thai food.

How was your day? Do anything fun?

  6. Tavia says:

I’ve already seen the collection and I absolutely adore the Mint Candy Apple and Rock Candy. I have to say that I’ve never wear green nail polish ( doesn’t matter what shade ) but this autumn I already like 5 nail polishes all in different kind of greens. It’s definitely the time that Green should come out and play and I’m talking about all those beautiful greens out there like Forest Green from Orly, Jade from Chanel and many others :)

I want lollipop!!! I normally don’t get lemmings for nail polish but you have me sold on this one!

  8. pinksoysauce says:

Thanks for the swatches! I need a sheer light pink/white suitable for French manis (or just as a sheer wash of color) – is Rock Candy a good one? I’m looking for one that’s not streaky and good within 2 coats, and I’m curious to try an Essie, which is supposed to be famous for sheers…

    • Karen says:

      Hi Pinksoysauce,

Rock Candy might be right up your ally. I did two coats and it wasn’t streaky at all. I did use a base coat though — that makes a huge diff in reducing streaks!

  9. Kate & Zena says:

Is it just me or is anybody sick of all the minty greens that have been coming out this year? Greenport, Peppermint Patty, Matte Gargantuan Green Grape, Mint Mojito, Jade, Mint Candy Apple….I’m so tired of minty, pastely greens. My Greenport is in retirement for awhile as I can’t stand looking at it anymore.

However, I am almost done with my rough draft essay for tomorrow. One down…two and a half to go (the half represents the final draft of the rough draft). Anybody want to type one for me?

    • Karen says:

      Hi Kate & Zena,

Girl, it seems like you ALWAYS have an essay due. Your deadlines are stressing me out! J/K ;)

Here’s your Tabs update for the day: right now he’s sitting on his favorite windowsill and chirping at a moth.

Give Zena a hug and kiss for me!

  10. Toni says:

Karen, I think I am going to try Siberian Nights first. When I got a pedi this summer, the nail place had OPI Red and I fell in love with it -it’s the perfect red for me! The Black Onyx was bought primarily for my daughter for Halloween, but I will definitely be using it too!

      Hi Toni,

What a nice mommy you are! I love when my mom gets me beauty stuff. :)

Oh! You could always do Red on your fingers and Black Onyx on your toes — classic and edgy at the same time.

  11. Marce says:

Hi Karen! What’s up? No minty green polishes have shown up here yet, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed (so badly they hurt, LOL). The other colours are pretty been there, done that…but Mint Candy Apple is gorgeous! I actually like it better than Chanel’s Jade! Hope you and Tabs (and El Hub, don’t want to make anyone feel left out) are OK! :D

      Hi Marce,

How are you? Things on this end are good! I’m back from Vegas and just trying to get back in the groove of things. What’s new with you? How’s school?

  12. Samantha says:

Ooh. Mint Candy Apple is so pretty.

  13. Catherine says:

    Aww, I was so excited for Mint Candy Apple but it’s so much less green than Jade… I have a feeling it’ll have the same character as China Glaze’s For Audrey where it just doesn’t play with my skintone nicely. ;_;

Ah, I love all three colors. I might have to jump on this.

Don’t feel guilty about liking that song so much. I’ve been addicted to it too, and I’m a San Diego girl.

I’m still wondering what Lil Mama was doing up on that stage at the end of the VMA performance though…

    • Karen says:

      Hi Marlo,

She comes out of nowhere like a genie at the end of that performance! Do you like how she poses at the end too? LOL! I think she’s from Brooklyn and was feeling the love…

  17. lauren says:

women in new york are hitting mint green nails HARD, i expect it to become the official winter color for high school girls of a certain sort but definetly lots of different types are all hitting it equally hard

    • Karen says:

      Hi Lauren,

Interesting. I have yet to see the Nor Cal girls working the green. It could also be because I live at the edge of the earth, LOL… maybe I’ll see more girls wearing the shade when I go to SF on Friday.

Hi Karen! School’s good, now that we’re finishing the year we’re doing the interesting things! On monday we’re going to do a live TV journal, I’m in charge of producing the entertainment spot, and we’ve got to do a couple more things too. Radio is killing us with all the interviews we have to do, but it’s great fun! Oh and my makeup course is great too, I’ve learnt quite a lot :D How’s life at your new home? I see you settled down fine!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Marce,

Wow, you’ve got a lot on your plate, but it sounds like you’re learning a ton. That’s so exciting.

Radio is tough! I’ve done it before and found it extremely challenging. Oh, and good luck with the video production! Are you guys almost done?

  22. Kristine says:

    Must have the minis set!

  23. keerthamina says:

great pics! I really appreciate your polish swatches, as it’s nice (and rare!) to see pics from someone with a skin tone similar to mine. I’ve been debating whether the blue undertones of Mint Candy Apple will work on me, but I think I’m sold now! :)

  24. Alison says:

I’ve got and prefer Chanel Jade, I think it’s a much more wearable green than the Essie, I don’t really wear reds and need another sheer pink like a hole in the head. I’ll be passing on this release, If I didn’t get Jade I may have thought differently but seeing them side by side has helped me realise I don’t need mint candy apple even though I like the colour.

  25. Solé says:

I’m not too excited about the collection but I do intend on picking up some shade of sea green before next spring. I was about to ask how it compares to Chanel Jade when I scrolled down and saw your side by side swatches :) You are just always on top of your game, girl. :)

  26. Whitney Chao says:

That mint green essie is so cute, and I’m addicted to Jay-z’s new song too! Fell in love with it when I saw the performance at the vma’s :D

  27. Monica says:

I’m lemming the Lolipop shade. I’ve been wearing OPI’s You Don’t Know Jacques & Sally Hansen’s Vixen (purple shade) but I in need of a vibrant colour.

I’m totally loving Mint Candy Apple. I don’t know if I would consider myself the trendy type (I’m under 20 and I wear baggy knit sweaters from the men’s department with the sneakers I’ve had since seventh grade, LOL!), but I just love that fresh looking blue. It says winter to me, in a spring kinda way. Which I’m sure makes perfect sense to everyone :P

  30. Lehea says:

Don’t feel guilty! That’s my fave track from Blue Print 3. I can repeat that 100 times and not be tired of it. Makes me wanna visit the east coast one of these days.

  31. Ashley says:

That Mint Candy Apple is screaming my name!

  32. Lindsay says:

I love the Mint Candy Apple! It reminds me of Tiffany Blue :)

    these are lovely swatches! thanks(:

  34. Christy says:

    Hi Karen,
I heard the concert was great. I wanted to go badly, but I didn’t get to pick up tickets. (Plus there was a lot of makeup I wanted too.) I like his music, plus we share the same birthday and he’s half-Pinoy. So of course I gotta love him!

      Hi Christy,

I thought that was a rumor! Did he ever confirm that? I sorta wish he and Beautiful B. would hurry up and create some music making children already.

  35. Christy says:

    Hi Karen,
I know there’s a song where he mentions. I’ll have to go check. Yes, I wish they would just have some children. They’d be so gorgeous!
