What Are Your Top 5 MAC Must-Haves?

January 25th, 2011 by Karen 94 Comments

MAC Viva Glam V Lipstick

I was digging through my MAC favorites this morning when I remembered a question asked by reader Sheila Z in the comments yesterday.

“Karen, I’ll be getting my makeup done this saturday at MAC for my brother-in-law’s engagement party. Part of the process requires that I buy at least 5 items. What are the top 5 you recommend?”

— Sheila Z

Hey Sheila,

Pardon me for this, but right now I feel Ready For The World! “Oh, oh, oh, oh, Sheila!”

(Please tell me you’re familiar with that song.)

With that out of the way, let’s get back to beauty. 🙂 You’re going to have such a blast at the MAC counter on Saturday. For what it’s worth, here are my five (current) MAC must-haves.

  • 217 Blending Brush ($22.50)

I wield this multi-tasking goat hair fiber brush Every. Single. Day. It has its way with both cream and powder products, and I use it for everything from loose pigments to under-eye concealer.

  • Fluidline in Blacktrack ($15)

This black gel liner stays put no matter what! I’ve shed a million tears with this stuff on, and it doesn’t budge for nothin’.

  • Pro Longwear Concealer ($16.50)

I really fancy this miracle working liquid concealer. Not only does it cover my dark circles well with its water-resistant formula, but it lasts all day long without fading, too. My one caveat? — it has a tricky pump.

  • Soft Brown Eyeshadow ($14.50)

If you like the look of browns with orange undertones, this matte shadow could be your new best friend. I wear it in the crease with smokey looks to give my eyes depth and dimension.

  • Viva Glam V Lipstick ($14.50)

LOVE love this shimmery neutral pink! I think it looks great on almost everyone, and 100% of the proceeds go to support men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS.

I also asked the gals on Twitter what their MAC must-haves are, and here’s what they had to say:

I hope this helps, Sheila! Have a great time at the party!

Ladies, how about you? What are your top five MAC must-haves?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. I know this is off topic, but how cute is this animation from Chanel? This is what my makeup dreams look like.

Oh my gosh, I’m horrible. How did I not mention Viva Glam V in my top 5? It’s one of those lipsticks that I’m sure I’ll keep buying for the rest of my life.

Blanc type eyeshadow (I wear it every day, kind of as a base for other shadows or as is), See Sheer Lipstick (such a pretty coral pink on me), Green Gel Cleanser, Lipgele in Glosspitality (which I can’t find anymore), and the 228 brush. LOVE! I had to edit my list severely.

    187 brush for foundation application.
Fluidline in either blacktrack or dipdown depending on skin tone
viva glam I for red lips
    viva glam V
    224 for crease

The brushes are expensive. But they are so good. I think you could find a good crease brush outside of MAC but I feel like the 187 is non negotiable.

I could have listed at least 5 other must haves and I only started buying MAC cosmetics in 2010. It’s an addictive line of cruelty free, good quality, fun, not super expensive makeup.

Happy Tuesday! My top five are below:

    1. Mineralize Skinfinish Natural. I Don’t know what I would do without this amazing powder.
    2. Pretty Plush Plushglass. A perfect neutral pink without sparkles that goes with everything.
    3. Well Dressed blush. This creates a glowy pink cheek that I love with smokey eyes.
    4. Mulch eyeshadow. A perfect shimmery brown for daytime smokey eyes.
    5. Equality lipstick. This was a limited edition nude that I bought two of because it never washes me out and creates a perfect soft lip look.

I can’t believe they made it 5 items now, I remember when it was 3!

Great topic, very interesting to read the answers! I’ve got two eyeshadows by MAC but I don’t really use them. I find them so pigmented they look veeery messy when I try to do something with them..

I love my MAC pressed powder though.

      Hi Advah,

What colors do you have? Also, what brush are you using? The type of eye brush you use to apply can change how much shadow you lay down on the lid.

Ah that might be the problem – I mainly use a plain fluffy Sephora brush (“all over” or something) and one of those flat brushes. I end up with eyeshadow everywhere.

I’ve been given a couple of palettes with colours that are easier to wear (greens, golds, purples), but the two colours I really like are Girlie and Scene. I should probably get a crease brush!

Karen, no Nymphette in your top 5?! 😀

Here are mine, somewhat generalized since everyone’s skintone is different:
    -Viva Glam V
-a nude shadow (mine is Mylar)
-a crease color (mine is Cork)
-a brow color (mine is Coquette)
-a sorta-nude lipglass (still loving Devilishly Stylish, wish I had bought five more)

I think a lot of stuff like liner and mascara is easily matched or outperformed by other, potentially cheaper brands.

Since I only own one MAC product (Viva Glam Cyndi), I don’t have a top five. I do have a wishlist, though. I thought the longwear concealer would be on it, but since I’m so happy with my $3 E.L.F. concealer, I don’t feel that I need it.
    My wish list:
    1. creme cup lipstick
    2. 217 brush
    3. Well-Dressed blush
    4. Brule or Vanilla eyeshadow (Ok, so that’s two…)

    1. MAC Fix Plus. This is the one item that all makeup users need at arms length. It’s perfect to set loose powder or any powder foundations. It cuts that powder edge off powder to make the loose powder/foundation look like flawless skin.

    2. MAC Embark Eyeshadow. This is a must have shadow that belongs in any Pro Palette. I like to call it the shadow that goes from Mild to Wild. Push this shadow at the base of the lash line for a soft liner. You can wet a liner brush and this shadow can give you that stylish cat eye. Turn some heads with Embark and pack on over the entire lid to for a to die for smokey eye. (Blend in MAC eyeshadow Texture in the Crease to soften) 😉

    3. MAC Fluid Line in Dig Down. This is awesome for the times when black is a little to dramatic. Also, this is the best to draw eyebrows on instead of a pencil or shadow. Stays on way longer.

    4. MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in Dark or Deep Dark. My go to bronzer and contour. I love this product because it doesn’t have shimmer in it. It have a soft finish to it that makes blending easier.

    5. MAC Lip Pencil in Subculture. Brown Nude Pinkish Color that just lovely. I like to fill the entire lip with this lip pencil and add a little gloss.

    1. Smoke and Diamonds e/s,
I cherish this so much and use it so sparingly! I was happy to see it in the “Look in A Box – Girl Next Door” travel set and am hoping to score this just so I can have a back up.

    2. Soft Dazzle – Dazzle glass creme
This is just a great soft, color on me. The sparkles aren’t crazy and just work.

    3.Technakohl in Photogravure
Looooove this! I’ve recently decided I’m a skinny liner person and the tecknakohls are the bomb-diggity. This color especially, so great when I need something that isn’t as bold as black, but has more punch than dark brown.

    4.Prep and Prime finishing powder
My face just looks so much better with this.

    5. Viva Glam VI (LS and Gloss)
This color works well for me when I need something with a
bit more punch, but it never shouts. The gloss is just perfect also.

Viva Glam V doesn’t work well for me, It looks like I have spackle the exact same color of my lips on. The Faire Glen l/s from Tarten Tale is much better as far a nude colors go for me.

I’ve owned Mac before… it was the first high end brand I tried and I liked it enough. I guess I moved onto other brands since then and, honestly, I’m too lazy to go to a store that carries only the one brand.

3- Naked lunch eye shadow – works in so so so many looks

I really haven’t tried a ton of MAC products, but I really like these: Mineralzed skinfinish Natural, Viva Glam Cyndi lipglass, Tempting eyeshadow, 219 brush, 187 brush.

Ok there are some more products that I like, but I guess those are my “top 5”

Oh and I really like that Chanel animation as well! Makes me want to buy something from them right now, haha!

I am seconding, thirding, and 100th-ing the recommendation for the Fluidline in Blacktrack. That has got to be #1 on my list.

    The rest:

    #2: Eyeshadow brush 244
    #3: Eyeliner brush 266
#4: Paint Pot in Painterly (just finished this one… *snif*)
#5: Lipstick in “O” – it’s seriously underrated now, but I love the shade and the finish on this one. Come to think of it, any MAC lipstick would be a must-have for me. Especially if it’s red!

I actually only own 5 MAC products… and none of them are my favorite. Blasphemy, I know! MAC overwhelms and intimidates me, honestly. 😛 (Now, if the brand in question were Urban Decay, that’d be a different story… ;))

    But here they are:

    1. Eyeshadow in Love Lace
    2. Lipstick in Pretty Please
    3. Mineralize Eyeshadow Duo in My Dark Magic
    4. Blush in Darkly My Dear
    5. Lipstick in Dark Deed

I’m think MAC eye products are some of the most useful, multi-tasking and unique products around. For reference, I’m an NW15.

    1. Painterly paintpot (or the matte paintpot that most closely matches your skintone).
    2. Vanilla Pigment (works as an eye highlight, face, and body highlighter).
    3. Woodwinked eyeshadow (a gorgeous metallic neutral that works across multiple skintones).
    4. Dipdown or Dark Diversion Fluidline (because black is too harsh for an everyday look IMO).
    5. Dalliance mega metal eyeshadow (because there is nothing else like it).

If you already own one of these, then I would go for either the MAC Prolongwear concealer or the 217 eyeshadow brush – my “do it all” eye brush when I only have room for a few items.

    2. #266 – this with espresso is my everyday eyebrow shade
    3. tie between #217 and #219 brush – to choose would be like Sophie’s Choice
    4. Pigment in Tan – my eyelid but better shade
    5. Paint Pot – Indianwood (again my eyelid but better in PP form hahaha)

Hey! it’s been a while since I commented on anything ;/

    1. Virgin Isle cream colour base
    2. Select Cover Up concealer
    3. Cut to Fit eyeshadow (discontinued, i think)
    4. Groundwork paint pot
    5. Melba blush

I’m not big on color on my face, lol. I love the natural face and eyes but then again I use super bright lips like Neon Orange, Show Orchid or Style Curve 😉

I definitely agree with you 100% on the 217 and Pro Longwear Concealer. This concealer is MAGICAL and it blends so well. I adore it. Here’s my top 5!

    1. Fix+ – like everyone else on here who’s said it! This is perfect for setting your looks and works wonders for hydrating if you’re dry skinned.
    2. Brule e/s – I’m not a huge fan of matte shadows, but this shadow is so versatile. It goes with literally any look and I use it almost every day. It blends like a dream, too!
    3. Vanilla Pigment – I love highlight colors that can be used for other things as well. I think this is why I adore pigments so much. Not only can I use Vanilla as an all over lid color and a highlight color, but I also use it for highlighting my cheek bones and the tip of my nose. It’s also perfect for a sheen mixed with your foundation or gloss to create a soft shimmer.
    4. Painterly Paint Pot – I have super oily lids, and have major issues with creasing. So I apply this on top of UDPP and it works wonders. My shadows no longer crease, my liner stays where it’s supposed to…. it’s just a necessity if you have oily problems.
    5. Oil Control Lotion – Now that applies only to oily folks, obviously. But every since I received a sample of this product, I almost cry in happiness when I touch my face and it feels great. I used to have to reapply Blot Powder at least 2-3 times a day, now it’s maybe only once if I feel like it. It’s pricey at $29 bucks, but definitely worth it if you need oil control!

    Mine:

Mineralize Skinfinish Natural – I rely on this for my daily powder, and it’s usually about all the ‘foundation’ I ever wear. It’s light, comfortable, covers well, lasts a long time and perfectly matches my skin. Love it.

#226 brush. I rarely buy limited edition brushes, but I’m so glad I got this one. It’s perfect for a light wash of shadow color, very intricate crease work and very light applications of highlighers; all the things I do most with eye makeup. It’s the perfect brush for me.

Brule eye shadow. The PERFECT highlighter for me, it’s awesome. I also use it to brighten up the eye area.

Brow gel. It just works. Makes my brows look really neat and nice, and I love the tinted ones when I’m feeling lazy.

Chatterbox lipstick. I have tons of favorite MAC lipsticks – Way To Love and Lovelorn are very close seconds to this one – but there’s something about Chatterbox that I just adore.
