MAC Give Me Liberty of London: bring on the cute compacts!

Ladies, who was it that said, “Give me Liberty, or give me Lunch”?

It must have been a girl after my own heart. 🙂 Since I wanted both today (Liberty AND Lunch), I checked out pics of the very prettily dressed MAC Liberty of London collection (arrives March 11) over lunch.

What do ya think of the white compacts (CUTE!)?

Maybe it was just the “mac” and cheese talking, but I got a little sentimental reminiscing about MAC packaging. They’ve done some great work over the years with the packaging of their limited edition collections.

Remember the fun Fafi girls, Miss-Hello-Kitty-if-ya-nasty, le grande Dame Edna and bodacious Barbie (to name but a few)?

MAC Give Me Liberty of London Eyeshadow in Dame’s Desire (a frosty, mid-tone reddish purple; $14.50)

I’ve fallen for my fair share of MAC collections based on outward appearances. Of course, the products on the inside were important, too, but beautiful, provocative window dressing usually makes me covet/lust/buy more… Funny how that works! 😕

Left: MAC Give Me Liberty of London Lipstick in Ever Hip (a creamy light coral, $14); Right: MAC Give Me Liberty of London Lipglass Perennial High Style (a creamy bright pinkish coral; $14)

MAC Give Me Liberty of London Nail Lacquer in Blue India (a creamy dark greenish blue with pearl; $12)

Okay I’m seriously becoming a mac porn addict. I’ve never tried it tho…boo

    • Karen says:

One of these days you’ve gotta! Start with either an eyeshadow or Lipglass… they’re $14, which isn’t too bad. If you get a neutral color that you’d wear often then you can easily get your money’s worth. 🙂

  2. Tiffany says:

I LOVE this packaging! I def want a few things!

  3. amber says:

I admit that I’m guilty of buying for the cute packaging more than once 😉 When Heatherette came out, I was guilty of this in many occasions. Ahem… 😉 But I love love love this collection design, the birds and flowers are too cute. I do want to get Peachstock!

  4. Solé says:

I actually haven’t ever bought anything *solely* for the packaging, but that’s only because any time I’ve ever like the packaging that much, the colors inside have been just as appealing. I don’t know what I would buy something just for the packaging if I had no use for the colors inside. My one Fafi lipstick (whose packaging I love), is one of my favorite spring lipsticks, so you see where I’m going with this one.

    • Solé says:

*that. I don’t know that I would buy something just for the packaging…

    • Karen says:

I am still deeply in love with the Fafi release. Can you believe that was two years ago? My how time (and MAC collections) fly by!

      • Solé says:

Yeah, I loved Fafi too. If I really try, I can line up MAC collections with major milestones in my life. Ha! 😀 Actually, this one really, really appeals to me, but I think it may be because the packaging is probably the prettiest I’ve ever seen from any makeup collection, MAC or otherwise. The shades are pretty, but not my favorite from them right now. I can’t seem to keep up with their releases lately. I missed out on the spring one and now the Ombre Blush in Ripe Peach is sold out everywhere. 🙁

      • Karen says:

Shoot! For a while there it was still available online at Nordstrom… I checked Macy’s, Neimans and Bloomindale’s and no luck there, either.

If you’re really desperate maybe call your Nordstrom MAC counter and ask them if they can ship it from another store? They’ve done that for me in the past.

        • Tiffany says:

Karla Sugar tweeted that it was literally sold out everywhere 🙁

“Damn, you canNOT buy Ripe Peach now. I checked every store that sells MAC (they checked other counters nationwide)”

  5. Toni says:

I had planned on buying something from this collection soley based on the packaging. Sadly, I can’t until Lent is over and by then, the collection will probably be gone too. Hopefully, someone will say that it looks awful in real life! LOL!

  6. Shah'ada says:

Love it!! I would totally buy some for the packaging . . . most recent? AiW UD palette!

  7. Fie says:

This is probably the only collection I’ve EVER want everything. Cute packaging or not, these colours call out to me 😀 In denial and justifying my reason to purchase? You bet. But at least I had the “liberty” to fess up 😉

  8. I was pondering the same thing. I am utterly coveting the Blue India polish, but everything is so pretty… However, after going to CCO this weekend and seeing Hello Kitty, Dame Edna, and Heatherette there, I may wait until it hits there.
    .-= Hedy @ penny for my thoughts’s last blog post… Automatic savings plans… =-.

    • Karen says:

I saw Hello Kitty at the CCO a few weeks ago too. I even saw a few bits from the Lure collection from waaay back!

      • Solé says:

Karen, when I saw this comment just now I was like, “What the heck is CCO, and how can I find one?!” So I did some Googlin’ and the most helpful info was of course one of your old posts. Apparently there is one close to me in Camarillo and one in Ontario. Yay for discounted makeup! 😀

  9. Steph B says:

I’m definitely buying something from the back to the beach collection just because of the packaging…but that will be the first time I’ve decided that before seeing actual products. Innovative or cute packaging can push a maybe purchase into a yes.

  10. I like the packaging, but I am anti-bird on packaging. I wont even buy toile plates w/ birds, so I dont know.

  11. julie says:

I have not purchased based solely on packaging, but THIS IS IT! I am counting down the days!!!

  12. Marce says:

I’ve never bought a product only for the packaging, I tend to buy something if I know I’ll be using it and I like it. Come to think of it, I do have a couple of items from Neo-Sci-Fi and I wanted at least something from HK for its cute packaging, so the outfit must really influence me, LOL! But the products I got are used quite a lot. But I think I’m going to go crazy with this collection 😀 Hopefully I’ll have a job by then, so I’ll be able to splurge!

  13. Catherine says:

Ooh, I have totally purchased things just for the packaging before. I bought the MAC for Hello Kitty Tahitian Sand beauty powder solely because I wanted the compact (and figured I’d switch it out for blot powder or something) but luckily I really love Tahitian Sand. I also bought one lipstick, Cute-ster, just for the packaging and the idea I could put other MAC lipsticks in it, but so far I haven’t switched anything out for it yet… I don’t wear my MAC lipsticks very often because they’re on the drying side of my collection (Laura Mercier Stickglosses FTW!).

I also bought the Tsumori Chisato for Shu Uemura highlighter, lipstick (actually two) and the compact mirror (I actually ordered this from Nordstrom’s for $25 total!!) solely because the packaging was absolutely adorable! I’m super happy with all the products though – they way exceeded my expectations. The highlighter is gorgeous and a very functional everyday shimmer, the lipsticks are actually the second nicest formula I own, and the compact mirror was so totally worth it. I carry it with me every day and it never fails to put a smile on my face. 😀

Weirdly, this collection’s packaging just isn’t doing it for me… but I do love that scarf!

  14. Glosslizard says:

I haven’t bought *solely* for the packaging, but pretty casing has certainly caused me to really look for something that I want in a collection, and maybe be a little less discerning toward the product inside!

  15. DonnaN says:

Oh, I MUST resist…..and Karen, your are CHIEF ENABLER!!

  16. Rae says:

I don’t actually like this packaging *hides*

On a side note, I’m convinced this scarf is just MAC trying to see how obscene they can be and still keep people buying 😉 First it was the MSFs at $33, then the tiny Viva Glam bags at $30, and now a $115 scarf! (CAD pricing, that is.) It’s like a very strange and fascinating social experiment… =D

  17. Luckily I’m madly in love with the colors in this collection as well, because the packaging is so swoonsome. I really cannot wait for this one to get here (and I’m just getting over Spring Color Forecast!)

  18. Vonvon says:

The purple eyeshadow is so pretty, coupled with the white packaging and the print on its cover!1 And oh yes….the scarf!!! But I am sure it would cost a bomb here!

  19. Stef says:

Oh no…must. have. NOW! The packaging is killing me, the colors are so pretty. Why does MAC hate my savings account so much? It’s determined to see it gone.

Between this and MAC to Beach, I’m very excited.

  20. marisol says:

Yes I have. I bought some Hello Kitty, Barbie & Fafi because I liked the items but for some, the packaging pushed me to get it. Heck, I even have the MAC Barbie. Still in it’s box.
.-= marisol’s last blog post… Fun in the Snow =-.

  21. lexi says:

I am still sad to this day that I missed the Barbie collection – I wasn’t a serious MAC collector then – I must have been in Stila mood at that time. What bad timing on my part – haha j/k. I did love fafi and luckily the Company Store nearby actually carries both Fafi palettes that I missed from the launch 2 yrs. ago. I’m just sad I didn’t get the teeshirt.

    • Karen says:

Barbie holds a special place in my heart! Who knows, maybe one of these days it’ll pop up at the CCO. If they still have Lure floating around surely Barbie can’t be far behind, LOL!

  22. amy says:

Yes I have got sucked into packaging but I usually can find a colour I really like in the collection as well, in order for me to justify myself into buying it too.

  23. PQYANDA says:

I’ve never bought an item specifically for the packaging. For instance, I was interested in some things from Hello Kitty and Fafi and the cool packaging was just a plus. I will most definitely buy something from this collection though (even though I am much less of a MAC addict now) because this packaging is AMAZING.

  24. Saku says:

I just a newbie in Mac, been eyeing their lipsticks and glosses for the longest. No, I haven’t yet. But I love the promo pictures, I like the tights she has on, cute.

  25. NINA says:

Im liking the scarf … LOL.

Yeah im a packaging addict, but ive not really gone for all the LE packaging. I have Fafi, Heatherette and Hello Kitty.

Im a bit OCD and really prefer the stuff on my makeup table/drawers to have a sort of uniform look – so most of them are in the black MAC palettes. 😛

  26. Yes I totally have!!!! But if the collection is really not that great, I’ll just get one item. This collection actually has a few items that I would like….the nail polish, blush, and 2 eyeshadows!!

    • Karen says:

It’s pretty pricey… but I’m kinda feeling it, LOL! I get a kick out of the accessories that you can actually wear, you know? I still have my Barbie Loves MAC T from a few years back, and I still wear it from time to time.

  28. Kristen says:

I have purchased many, many products based solely on packaging. And I can tell you I’m going to do it again with this collection and with MAC’s To The Beach!

  29. Lucy says:

I actually don’t like the packaging on this – there were some Revlon (I think) lipsticks a while ago that I wanted simply because they came in quilted packaging!

  30. Tracy says:

Is it just me, or does it seem when MAC has special LTD packaging that the colors are always sooo nice? 🙂 See, I can ALWAYS justify a makeup purchase! I am looking forward to this release. My artsy teen daughter will be begging for this one!

  31. Katie says:

I constantly buy things just for the packaging! But usually when I do the product is still really nice, I just wouldn’t have noticed it without the intricate palette.

  34. Keerthi says:

I’ve never bought anything based solely on the packaging, but I LOVE the packaging of this collex! I have a feeling that if I even remotely want any of the products from it after seeing swatches, the packaging will push me over the edge to actually buy them.

  35. Anastasia says:

I love Liberty of London… it was one of my fave stores when I lived there. I think I need that scarf… I’m not a person who will buy something for the packaging but it’s definitely an influencer!

On a makeup related note, was having a realllly bad day yesterday and a friend brought over the MAC Lady Gaga pink lippy (oh she knows me well) and a large selection of baked goodies for us to consume from a new bakery. I was thinking – oh goodness, please don’t make me choose between makeup and yummies… but what a cheerful surprise!

  36. christine says:

I love this collection already, but the packaging is definitely a killer, i just love it so much already I think im getting a lot from this collection. Im a sucker for cute packagings:)
