You know what I just realized? I just realized that I can tie different eras from my teens and 20s to Aaliyah’s music. Like, Jen, Cindy and I played Back and Forth so much in the summer before I left for college, and then in the spring of my senior year at Davis, Are You That Somebody was almost constantly on the radio whenever Eleanor, Mary Anne, Christine and I drove anywhere (In-N-Out after class, to the city late at night to go clubbing, house parties, the library, to go rollerblading all over town, to the gym).
And then around the time El Hub and I met, Rock the Boat was THE JAM.
Aaliyah’s legacy lives on through her music, and her fans lobbied hard for a MAC collection.
I wore my first look with it today (I plan to do at least one more with a lip), and here are pics, swatches (NC42) and some thoughts (in the video). First impression: holy shimmer!

No frosty beige lipstick? I’m surprised. There is a dark lip liner, and I would have worn that in the late ’90s, but I wouldn’t have worn it with the matte beige they included in the collection… I would have done it with a frosty beige or a frosty pale purple. ?
See anything you like?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Of course I’m into “Hot Like,” but I’m contemplating whether or not I need my 6 billionth red lipstick lol!
Karen says
Hi Cindy,
You know my answer to that… (YES). LOL! Then again I’m the person who carries 8 nude lippies everywhere I go. 🙂
Happy Friday to you! What are you up to this weekend? Doing anything fun?
Cindy says
Happy Friday! I’m going to be reliving my 80’s glory days, LOL! Going to see Midge Ure & Paul Young tonight. Saw Depeche Mode on Wednesday and going to see U2 tomorrow! Full weekend ahead!

Happy birthday Karen! ??
I remember I was crushed when Aaliyah passed. Such a talent. More Than a Woman and Hot Like might have to come home with me as keepsakes.

Thanks, Sarah!

Of course, I like 1 in a Million best. It has that Black Honey vibe. 🙂 The packaging is very nice – super reflective, which I guess goes with all the shimmer inside.
I hope you have some fun birthday things planned for tomorrow! Fingers crossed for a fabulous day! 🙂
On a slightly bummer-like note, the Hubs just found out he has shingles. It’s in his temple area and anywhere near the eye is cause for concern. I’m now an expert after researching this morning! HAHA! I’ve had chicken pox but the boys haven’t. He’ll have to keep his distance!

I’m so glad you reviewed this collection! I was most excited about the bronzer and the Try Again lipstick when I first heard about it. I was thinking the bronzer looked a bit too light. You’re the first person I’ve seen review it, and I use your reviews as a shade reference for foundation, so it’s definitely too light for me. Brooklyn Born & Try Again look like must haves!

I wish they had not made any reference to Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number in this collection. That song always reminds me of her very creepy R Kelly marriage. I think the eyeshadow palette is beautiful and Would be great for traveling but now I can’t buy it.

Happy happy birthday Karen!!! I hope you enjoy yourself!
I was quite disappointed with the color selection MAC chose for this collection. I have hooded eyes too so I’ll pass on the eye shadow. I’m a Aaliyah fan so I’ll get something from the collection but not as much as I would’ve if I liked it more. Probably will get the coral lip glass and maybe a lip stick, curious as to how that bronzing powder would look on me.

I adore the whole packaging! The deep red is so pretty, and the lipstick colors are eye-catching too.

Bonne anniversaire, cherie!
Way to rock the pearly plummy bronzeness and sleek sultry lock – no one does it better!

I’m not in love with any of the lippies, but hello eyeshadows!! I notice that this collection is coming out after the 20% off sale that ends today, however. ?

I don’t see anything special, I see MAC Shroom, Plum Dressing, Cork, Espresso, Expensive Pink, Typographic eyeshadows. I feel only Magic Moor eyeshadow is kind of unique, but not for everyday.

Happy birthday, Karen! Loved seeing a video review as I have been reading your blog for years and years but this is the first time I got to hear your beautiful voice! ☺️
