A Summery Sunday Face of the Day With MAC Too Fabulous

Published in: Face of the Day (FOTD), MAC Makeup

Finding cute, CHEAP accessories always puts me in a good mood. Like these leopard print shell earrings from H&M (a mere four buckaroos!) — finding them made me feel kinda like this…

The colors and print reminded me of summertime, which lead (is it lead or led?) to this peach, bronze and orange look with a mix of MAC products from Too Fabulous, Spring Colour Forecast and MAC’s permanent collection.

Lip Pencil in Mouth Off, Lipstick in Fresh Salmon, Mineralize Blush in Sun & Moon

I was shooting for something soft, with a warm brown/bronze eye, shimmery peach cheeks and a coral lip.

This was pretty much a MAC-themed look for me today, but I’m thinking about trying it again with drugstore browns, peaches and golds.

A few drugstore alternatives…

Zoink! What the heck happened to Sunday? Someone must have taken it. Bastards… :) Enjoy the last few hours of your weekend, and get some rest tonight. Time for this girl and her cat to watch some Burn Notice online.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I need best and worst beauty experiences this week thinger. Why? I have the ultimate worst–Zena destroyed my brushes. Six of them (thankfully, some escaped her cabin fever attack). One of the attacked is still usable as she only gnawed on the end but boy am I mad. Two were my brand new Smashbox brushes. She’s a very lucky dog to be snoozing with Dad at the moment.

Zena is in some seriously deep doggy doo doo with me. She owes me brushes. I will never dry my brushes on my table again. Six brushes is painful.

    • Hyzenthlay says:

Ah, Kate, that SUCKS! I’m sorry to hear of your brush destruction . . . Six brushes is so painful!

      • Kate & Zena says:

It is painful! The weird thing is Zena normally isn’t a chewer. The only explanation we (i.e. Mom and I) can think of is that Zena has cabin fever. Between the cold temperatures and the lack of bunnies, Zena has been inside and taking out all her hunting energy on toys. Normally it’s just toys but to see brush hairs all over my floor was so maddening.

Only five are, well, destroyed beyond repair. My blush brush escaped with just some chew marks on the handle (the bite marks annoy me to no end). The worst part is I now have NO BLENDING BRUSHES. NONE. Okay, I have a pencil end on one of my destroyed duo brushes that’s intact but I don’t think that counts. I’m keeping the evidence so if her loyal supporter (read: Dad) doesn’t believe me, I have five brushes that suffered from a very painful death by chewing.

Nope, she is going to have to do a lot of kissing up to fix this and at least three brushes.

    • Enrica says:

I’m so sorry about your brushes. Hang in there, and get some new brushes.
      .-= Enrica’s last blog post… OOTD – Springish outfit =-.

    • Jen says:

Oh no! Sorry to hear about your brushes. I would be sooo mad at my dog if she did that. She once tore apart one of my sister’s DS games, but she was a puppy at the time (and the game wasn’t mine).

Maybe something AWESOME will happen to make up for it!

      • Kate & Zena says:

        Jen,

Oh my God, she chewed you sister’s DS game?! Well, then again, your sister was kinda asking for it laying the games around as puppies are notorious chewers (been there, done that twice). Zena, on the hand, is a 6 year old terrier and knows better. She is allowed to chew on chewies (aka rawhides), her toys and well, rodents except skunks (we have a bunny & squirrel overpopulation here). My mom’s eyes bulged when she heard how much I paid for my Smashbox brushes. Luckily, said mother is convincing my dad to buy me the two Smashbox brushes dear Zena murdered (ruthlessly) and another one of my choice because I don’t exactly have $56 lying around.

So, here is the lesson all you dog people out there should follow. Do NOT put brushes (particularly $28 and up ones) in Dog Vision and Dog Reach, even if said dog is normally not a Chewer. All it takes is temptation and a bit of cabin fever and the brushes are toast.

Zena made up for it with massive snuggling this morning. It doesn’t mean I’m still bitter. She’s been charged with five counts of Brush Homicide in the First Degree and one count of Attempted Brush Homicide.

        • Jen says:

Yeah, my sister has been really careful about putting her games away after that. She was at work at the time, and she asked how bad it was, so I snapped a picture and sent it to her. She was LIVID. Luckily, my dog is now almost 4 and doesn’t chew stuff anymore (unless a rogue Q-tip lands on the floor). Plus, she’s tiny so she’s too short to reach most things. Haha.

Sounds like Zena is racking up quite the criminal record… Hopefully your dad will buy your replacements. $56, OUCH!

          • Kate & Zena says:

I think her record must be longer than any other normal criminal. She’s killed something like 15-20 squeaker toys, 4 bunnies (yes, 4 fluffy brown real life bunnies. No, I did not touch them. I do NOT do dead animals), 5 brushes and uh three catalogs? We discount most of them but the 5 brushes I’ll be bitter about for quite some time. I won’t be erasing those from her naughty list for a while. Everything else is filed under “Boredom List,” (catalogs) or “Natural Instincts List” (bunnies and well, squeaky toys).

what foundation are you sporting? it has a dewy beautiful finish!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Babybubbles,

That’s good ol’ Laura Mercier Oil-Free with a mix of MAC Prep+Prime and MAC Blot to set.

I think the dewiness might be from the Mineralize Blush on the cheeks!

  10. This is a great look! Your hair looks gorgeous too. :)

  12. NINA says:

I love the look … esp the blush! Awesome … makes me want to shop for more blush.

I think my new rule is no buying of eyeshadows unless its something I cant live without – tough criteria to meet because I feel like I cant live without a lot of the eyeshadows I see.

I do need to buy more blush …. :D

    • Karen says:

I support you developing a new blush habit 100%!!

There are so many ways to get addicted: powder blush, cream blush, liquid blush, gel blush… ah, the sky’s the limit.

      • NINA says:

Oh wow @ the possibilities — methinks im in more trouble than I bargained for LOL !!!!

I want to get some more mineralized blushes and try a cream blush. I have Benetint and Posietint that I love so im squared away int he gel/liquid blush category.

        :D

  17. Meghan says:

you look sooo pretty!!! i LOVE LOVE LOVE the hair. i try to make my hair look like that but it never ends up looking as good! I’m also loving the fresh salmon lipstick color… do you think a pale girl with dark hair could pull it off?

    • Karen says:

      Hi Meghan,

What products/styling tools are you using? Maybe all that’s missing from your routine is a good hairspray or heat protectant.

      • Meghan says:

i just started using the tousle me softly herbal essences but am willing to splurge on a better one. i also am gonna buy the new sedu blow dryer b/c my hot pink t3 burnt out on me after less than a year :(

  19. Brenda says:

My first post on your site! I love your lip colour Karen, have you used a lip gloss over the Mac salmon lipstick? How do you get your lips so glossy?

    • Karen says:

      Hi Brenda,

Yay, thank you for leaving a comment! :)

For this look I didn’t do gloss… that’s just Salmon with Mouth Off Lip Liner. I think it looks so shiny because of the shimmer.

Are you a MAC fan too?

      • Brenda says:

I’m a big Mac fan. I have loads of their lip glosses and liquid eyeliners, the liners stay put all day. And I have a few Mac make up brushes. But the variety is limited here in South Africa. Was overwhelmed with the Mac counters in America when I was there last year. You guys are so lucky!!!

  20. lexi says:

Simply adorable! When did you buy those earrings? I need to buy a birthday gift this Saturday. This would be a cute addition to the MAC glosses I was planning to give her!

    • Karen says:

Last week. They should still be there!

BTW, did you end up checking the Gaultier stuff out at Target?

      • lexi says:

yes girl!!! I bought the nautical stiped tunic thing that’s been featured in every editorial this month. I wore it around the house with skinny jeans and a white cami – I love it but definitely NOT work appropriate, sadly! Too bad they didn’t have the trench. I am just so HAPPY to own something with the name Gaultier on the tag. I have been a huge fan for a LOOOOOONG time!

I also picked up Loud and Lovely, Double Dare, Bottle Green e/s – from B2M – I turned in 18 containers!! I bought Trimmed in Pink lip liner. I hope they will still have Mouth Off this weekend – pay day and I want a liner to go with Fresh Salmon – have you tried that with Richer, Lusher? I’m curious of what that looks like!

  21. Amanda says:

hey Karen, long time no writing…. :-) (been reading everyday of course). Just wanted to drop a quick note to say you look fab-I love the color combo. The eyes really remind me of a look the character Sarah on Chuck (do you watch that?) has been sporting this season–which I love, love, love on her and have been trying to dupe!!! So I may need to get woodwinked. I was just a mac Saturday and didn’t look at any eyeshadows or the permant collection. I picked up riveting lipstick and a newish pigment-I think it is called rich life? it’s a dark chocolety brown…..

    • Karen says:

      Hi Amanda!

It’s good to hear from you. :)

How are you liking Riveting Lipstick? That was one of the nice surprises from that collection, methinks.

Definitely check out Woodwinked… it’s one of my MAC faves. Other colors that might help you get a similar look are: Honey Lust, Beige-ing Shadestick, Honesty, Vanilla, Woodwinked, Romp and Kid.

  22. Georgia says:

Gah. I bought Sun and Moon AND Fresh Salmon only yesterday and I’m having troubles.
I’m pretty sure I asked for Bi-Tone but the Lady gave me Sun and Moon and I’ve been trying to make it work but on my pale skin it is a garish orange!
Fresh Salmon on the other hand is GORGEOUS. I simply cannot get enough of that colour!

  23. Marian says:

You look lovely! These colors look great on you! I also love the warm browns, and peachy or coral colors.

  24. Jacquelyn says:

Pretty look! I love Fresh Salmon l/s! I might order a backup since this color will be so popular for the Spring. I do need to start using brown eyeliner since I always use black with my neutral everyday look.

what’s your favorite brush that you use to appy these mineralize blushes? do you have a favorite, or does it vary on how you’re feeling? i really LOVE your look with the mac products. just made me a list to take to my counter. i have the fresh salmon, and really want to try the liner with it so see if it’s compatible with me…didn’t know if the blush would be too dark. will have to check…

    Hi Karen,
Will you please post an updated review of the Laura Mercier foundation/tinted moisturizer? I have the same Filipino tan as you so I would like to invest in a foundation that “perfects” my skin, but doesn’t look like a mask. Right now it’s between Make up For Ever foundation, NARS foundation, and Laura Mercier. I highly value your opinion so please help a girl out :)
