Take a Tea Break in the Open Thread

Published in: Just For Fun

makeup and beauty blog open thread

Hi, ladies. How’ve you been doing today? Question for you: have you ever had a beignet before? It’s like a light-ish donut hole type thing (DELICIOUS!), and I had one of them a few of them for the first time this morning at brunch with my mom in the East Bay.

Then when we got home we fired up “the Skype” to wish a very Happy Mother’s Day to El Hub’s mom in the Islands.

Skype is so amazing, isn’t it? It’s hard to believe that less than 100 years ago most people kept in touch by writing letters, by hand!

To share obsessions, like the ones I daydreamed about in the car today on the drive home, they would have reached for their favorite pencil or quill pen (when were ballpoints invented?), grabbed a piece of paper and started writing. Now we use Twitter, Facebook and blogs to share our obsessions like…

1. These earrings from H&M

They’re my new favorite pair because they go with everything, and they were cheap, too (five bucks)!

2. Trader Joe’s Soft Bit Mini Chocolate Hazelnut Biscotti

One word: divine. They’re not as hard as regular biscotti (which tear up the roof of my mouth), and as long as I only eat a couple of them they’re a pretty low-calorie chocolate fix.

3. Betty White on Saturday Night Live

Um, I love the Golden Girls… Seriously. πŸ™‚ I was counting down the days until this week’s episode of SNL because actress Betty White was hosting the show last night, but then I ended up falling asleep early on the couch, so I think I’m going to watch it tonight.

Have you been obsessed with anything lately? Let me know in the Open Thread.

If you’re a new reader, the Open Thread is basically just a post where we can talk about subject in the comments, be it makeup, movies, careers, school, relationships, pets — you name it.

Talk to you soon!

We adopted a rescue kitty! We’re very excited to have him home, and he’s hella cute.

His name is Bruce Springsteen and he’s 5 months old!

    • Karen says:

      VERY CUTE! I heart him!

      Look at his paws… awww!

    • Nina says:

      Oh what an adorable kitteehh!

Speaking of rescue, when the Hubs and I drove up, we found our front neighbor’s dogs wandering around our block. We called her over and I was saddened to see how skinny she was – looked like she had not eaten in DAYS!!!

We were careful with the amount of food we gave her but we fed her both wet and dry food and gave her water. I am so tempted to report them to the SPCA for neglect. We both really want to just grab her but that might not bode well for friendly neighbor relations. For now were going to feed her whenever we see her wandering around.

When Hubs returned her to their yard, he said her chain was nowhere to be found. Im almost thinking that her owners want her to run away. πŸ™

      • Karen says:

Poor pup. πŸ™ I hope that her owners get it together, soon.

        • Nina says:

I hope so too. I was on the lookout for her as we left this morning but didnt see her. πŸ™

        • Nina says:

I hope so too. Otherwise id really call the SPCA on them. πŸ™

I was lookin around for her this morning but didnt see her.

      • Lee says:

Next time ur talking 2 ur neighbours, y dont u bring up convo and say that u and ur hubby really want a dog so ur thinking of going 2 get one on the wkend…ur neighbour might say here have ours πŸ™‚ hopefully anyway!

    • Amber says:

      What a cutie!!
      .-= Amber’s last blog post… Come on Friday =-.

    • Marian says:

Awwwww…so cute! I’m so glad you adopted a black kitty. Did you know that black cats and dogs are least likely to be adopted?
For that reason, I’ve got 3 black cats and a black dog! May your kitty have a long and wonderful life with you!

  2. Wendy says:

Both my cats died last year, one was 12, one was 20. Looking at these pictures of Tabs has convinced me it’s time to get another cat or two! LOL

I need to be a mommy again πŸ™‚

  3. Wendy says:

Jessica! He’s ADORABLE! I think someone up there is REALLY trying to tell me something!

  4. How cute Jessica! I was absolutely obsessed with the Betty White episode, but I was only able to watch the first 20 minutes, and then I fell asleep on my couch. (I was so angry at myself, but I’d been up since 6:00 am that morning, and had worked till 10:00pm, plus I’m 8 months pregnant so i had a pretty good excuse.) I was able to watch some of the clips today on hulu.com, and it was great. I’m also obsessed with Zoya’s sparkle collection. Have you tried it? I swear every colors a winner, and I can’t get enough of them. I’ve never tried a beignet before, but yesterday I had a nutella crepe and though of you. It is hard to believe that people actually communicated through snail mail before. I can’t even imagine doing that anymore. Not sure when’s the last time I actually sat down, picked up a pen and began writing a letter and mailing it out. Do you have any special plans this week? Will you be in Ny for the makeup show?

    • Karen says:

I am watching the Betty White episode now. I just LOL’d when she called Facebook a big waste of time, ha ha ha!

As for the Zoya sparkle collection, I haven’t tried any of the shades. Which one should I start with first?

Speaking of snail mail, the other day I found a bunch of letters from my freshman year in college. It blows my mind that people now just email each other…

This week I plan on getting my hair done! My roots are so far gone it’s not even funny. Oh, and I wish I could be in NY for the makeup show. It’s a little far from SF though.

Ya know, I didn’t realize how far along you were! When is your due date?

  5. Kelly says:

    Hey Karen,

    Happy cat Mom Day!! πŸ™‚

Where praytell did you find Beignet’s in the East Bay? I haven’t had one but have heard of them and know they are big in New Orleans. They sound so good!

  6. Rae says:

Salut, ma belle! I’m supposed to be studying right now for finals, but I wandered over here instead πŸ˜› I was hoping there would be an open thread — great minds think alike, lol!! I spent my “study break” cropping and colour-adjusting images for tomorrow’s post (a Hello Kitty facechart-inspired EOTD and tutorial.) Bad move… it feels like I haven’t had a break at all!

I think I’ll spend the last few minutes of my break browsing photos of Tabs πŸ˜› Jessica’s kitty may be adorable, but he’s no Tabs!

P.S. Beignets sound delish. I’ll have to google them later!

  7. Alex says:

Dude, Betty White was epic. I loved them bringing back all the female cast members from seasons past. πŸ™‚

To make this comment makeup related, I recently discovered how awesome Urban Decay is!

    • Karen says:

I haven’t watched SNL in years… but I couldn’t pass up an ep with the fabulous Betty White. πŸ˜€

That’s cool that you’ve just discovered UD. Have you tried any of the Heavy Metal Liners yet?

      • Alex says:

Nope, I only picked up the Summer of Love palette (love!!) and some 24/7 liners. πŸ™‚ I did get a Heavy Metal liner in Distortion with a liner packet, have yet to try it out. Not sure how to work it into an every-day look.

      • Karen says:

Try a very thin line of it along the lower lash line. It adds a very subtle pop of glitter!

  8. Nina says:

Jessica your kitty is really cute! and his name is absolutely amazing πŸ˜€ it’s 3 am here and I’m still awake, though after a bit more wandering I’m gonna try to sleep. I think I love letters because I always prefer writing on paper than on a keyboard, it’s more real to me. actually my bff’s letter arrived just 2 days ago and I couldn’t be happier about finding it in the mailbox! because she’s in korea and although we always talk on facebook, msn etc. it’s so nice of her to take some time to write about all the important things going on in her life right now (b/c to me, messages through the net are always short and rush). and the excitement of waiting a letter is just wonderful. I’m obsessed with yes to carrots’ lip butters recently, they’re heaven on my lips!

    • Karen says:

I was up until 3 am last night (couldn’t fall asleep).

That’s so wonderful that you and your bestie still write letters. I think it’s so nice to have something tangible that you can keep, you know? Even though you can print out email it’s still so fleeting.

How long have you guys been friends?

      • Nina says:

I know, I have a really cute box to keep my letters and gifts in and even looking at it makes me happy, it’s good memories. we’ve been friends since highschool, we’re both 23 now πŸ™‚ I think we both need some lavender scented things under pillows karen πŸ™

      • Karen says:

        Yeah… or some warm milk?

Have you ever tried herbal tea at bedtime? I’ve been drinking this stress release tea and it usually helps me fall asleep:

I think it didn’t work last night because I drank a huge cup of coffee earlier at lunch! Oops! I hardly ever drink coffee and so I was totally wired.

  9. Devs says:

Hi Karen! Other than running, what other type of things do you do to keep in shape?! ( For example, exercise and diet). I need to get in shape and I need some motivation!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Devs,

I try to watch what I eat and count calories… although I haven’t been very strict about it lately.

Writing down what I eat helps too!

  10. Nina says:

We got home 4ish and ive cleaned and done laundry. I didnt bother to unpack most of my stuff in my suitcase since were going back to Austin in 2 wks for hubs’ niece’s college graduation.

Ive not seen the Betty White SNL – its recorded and waiting for the hubs and I to go to bed later. Were waiting for The Cleveland Show and Family Guy – 2 of my fave shows.

In terms of obsession, its been two-fold: first is finding a replacement scent for D&G Light Blue that ive used for years. Im using CLEAN Provencal these days and I like it but it really doesnt stay on for that long. I ordered the Michael Kors rollerball to give it a try, but the search continues.

Another thing ive been obsessing about is the 226 brush that I missed during the BBR (not into makeup a whole lot at that time) and Color Craft (for reasons I cannot remember. It goes for like 80 bucks on Ebay these days, but I found one that was reasonably priced and from a person I trust. Score! Its funny that I find things like this such a nice and unexpected treat! πŸ™‚

    How was your week?

    • Karen says:

      Hi Nina,

Have you sniffed any of the Tocca scents? They’ve got a light, breezy vibe similar to D&G Light Blue (Light Blue was my wedding day scent, btw!). I tried Tocca Bianca yesterday and loved it. Here’s a link with the notes:

My week was good… I’m not ready for Monday. I already have the Monday blues. πŸ™

      • Jessica says:

Just a note to say I live in Austin! Yay!

      • Nina says:

I did too – have the blues early… Ended up watching tv. The Betty White SNL was awesome! πŸ™‚

I will check Tocca out, probly on Wednesday when I go get some more LUSH porridge soap! πŸ™‚

        Thanks Karen!

      • Nina says:

Ive been eyeing those @ the Sephora website. Ill sniff em out on Wed because im making a quick trip to the mall to get more porridge soap. πŸ™‚

Thanks for the tip and I still love love love Light Blue (wow @ wedding scent – thats cute!) …. but I need a slight switchover!

I ended up watching tv – the Betty White SNL was hilarious! Monday – so not lookin forward to it!

  11. Nina says:

Oh and on the subject of beignets — pure love! So yummy especially with Du Monde (chicory) coffee!!!

    • Karen says:

I love that coffee… especially when it’s made in a french press.

The only thing I like to put in it is condensed milk. Oh gawd, my tummy just rumbled. πŸ˜€

      • Nina says:

Omg @ condensed milk in coffee. That is pure love. Kinda like Cafe Sua Da from a Vietnamese place.

I should pick up some chicory coffee for next weekend…. πŸ™‚

  12. Ashley says:

I returned a few things today & it feels so good to get my money back. I hate being so on and off in stores where I buy something then go home only to think, “Hmmmm.. I should return it. I don’t like it very much after all…” I waste so much time by going back and forth. Atleast most stores have great return policies these days. I think most people take return policies for granted, anyone else agree??

    • Karen says:

I’ve heard so many nightmare stories of people getting hassled for returns… I try now to only shop at stores with a good return policy (yay, Nordstrom!). What did you end up bringing back?

      • Ashley says:

I returned a wallet & a few skirts. The best part was not spending a dime afterwards. I usually congratulate myself by buying something else LOL. I’ve been having great restraints against shopping lately, wooo go me!

  13. iceempress says:

    happy mother’s day everyone!

we avoided the mother’s day rush at the restos and just chilled out at home. made a pretty good banana coffee bread with chocolate chips. is it me or is it a chick flick weekend? i watched miss congeniality and fell in love with benjamin bratt all over again…what is he up to?

i just hit pan on my MAC Blush in Buff πŸ™‚ so excited about trying on a new blush soon! i have been using Buff both for day and evening since it is so easy to control. i also have a small pink blush from ELF in my purse. got it for a dollar πŸ™‚ now that packs a lot of color for a little thing. i have to keep blending and blending to make it look more natural.

i love the graphics on your site karen! do you make them or do you have a graphics designer you hire? i particularly love your banner.

    • Karen says:

I think he has a show on TV! I haven’t seen that movie in ages… I might have to rent it soon. πŸ™‚

So would you believe I’ve never tried any ELF products? Have you tried anything in addition to the blush? Inquiring minds wanna know!

As for the banners, yup, I do the graphics… mostly in Photoshop. πŸ™‚

      • iceempress says:

e.l.f. (not all caps by the way my bad) had a one dollar for everything sale around a year ago and i got lip gloss, cream and powder eyeshadow, and mani-pedi items.

i liked the lip gloss because it was a twist-and-brush set up all in one stick if you get what i mean. color selection was pretty limited though. cream eyeshadow was a mis-buy – my lids are super oily. powder eyeshadow had little staying powder. they were all a dollar each so i did not feel too bad πŸ˜›

you have mad photoshop skills πŸ™‚ i need to get back to using it for fun. i use photoshop at work mostly for editing building photos and layouts – fun but not as fun as just graphic design.

  14. Amber says:

I love beignets! When my mom and I visited New Orleans, we ate them every day at Cafe du Monde. I’ve also had some in the Cayman Islands that were the size of a baseball!

I wish we had an H&M here. Can you believe the fourth-largest city in the US doesn’t have an H&M? I still have clothes I bought there years ago and they’re in good condition, which is amazing for how inexpensive they were.

Yay for Skype! I skyped with my sister this morning (she’s in London).

    • Karen says:

It’s amazing, isn’t it? Gotta love technology. My mum-in-law isn’t really into computers but she loves Skype because it allows her to “visit” with her kids/grandchildren here on the mainland.

      • Jen says:

My grandpa came over once while my sister was on Skype, so he got to talk to her for a bit. He was like… “But where’s the telephone?!” It was so cute.

        • Agnes says:

haha aww Jen i know exactly what you mean! my baby neice and nephew live all the way over in hong kong (china) and whenever we get together as a whole family, we love to use skype to talk to them. However, last time my grandpa wanted to try, he was so confused at how it worked. he kept asking “do i just talk? are you sure they can hear me?” haha definately cute πŸ™‚

  16. hey karen! omg that biscotti picture is making me hungry. I got a lovely episode of food poisoning starting friday night, so I didn’t eat anything until half a piece of white toast this afternoon. needless to say…I’m still pretty frickin hungry lol. beignets sounds so familiar, but I don’t believe I’ve had them before. nice earrings! I think I’ve seen them in a lot of your FOTDs, they really do match with everything

    • Karen says:

Dude, food poisoning sucks! I had a really bad episode earlier this year and it took me a long time to be at one with food again. I hope you feel 100% soon!

    • Liza says:

That’s nuts. I also got food poisoning on Friday and I am just now regaining my strength! … except when I think of the offending dinner that did me in, I start to feel ill all over again!

  17. Steph B says:

Beignets are fabulous. I’m into anything in the genre. Do you pick up any malasada’s when you visit El Hub’s family? Definitely high on my list of things I miss about HI.

I picked my mom up some Ecotools brushes and a Too Faced Shadow Insurance for Mother’s Day. I noticed when she was here last time that here brushes were just sad and she tried out my primer and liked it but didn’t know what to get.

    • Karen says:

Oh yeah! There’s usually a Leonard’s truck parked at the Windward Mall, which is right down the street from their house. Mmm… fried doughy goodness.

Can I just say that’s awesome that your mom uses eyeshadow primer? I don’t think my mom is ready to go there. She’s not exactly makeup inclined. Although she was wearing perfume today, which is a step. πŸ™‚

      • Steph B says:

Leonard’s! Love them. The rule in our lab was that when we went to pick up samples we had to make a stop at Leonard’s on the way back.

I was able to reform her sun-bunny ways so that she now wears SPF every day so eye shadow primer just might stick. It is funny because I probably wear more makeup than she does but at first glance you’d think the opposite because she always has dark lipstick on. She has much darker, more olive skin than I do and can pull off stronger colors.

  18. yiota says:

    Hellooo! Happy mother’s dayyy!
Yes, skype is amazing! My parents get to talk and see their family in greece which is crazyy!
Here’s my story of the day:
I’ve been to forever 21 about 2-3 times but i never found anything nice there. But, on the website they have so many nice things so i never understood why i couldnt find anything! I’ve been telling my parents for a month now to bring me downtown and we finally went today. I picked out and tried on about 30 outfits in 1 hour and i ended up buying 3 shirts and 2 pairs of earrings! I’m sooo happy and excited! I have hope in forever 21 again πŸ˜›

Other than that, this week is my last week of school and i have a load of finals (on tuesday i have 3 exams and 1 essay) so i need all the strength in the world to overcome that, and then a nice relaxing Lush bubble bath on friday..as well as shopping! That sounds nice doesn’t it?

    • yiota says:

Oh i forgot to say something:
I really wanted to go see the To the beach collection on may 27th, but im leaving the country that day πŸ™ will the collection be available in canada on that day? and do they have the collection ready right when the store opens, because if thats the case then maybe i can stop by before leaving for the airport!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Yiota,

I know that a few Canadian stores are doing preview events on the same day as the US stores on 5/18. Maybe call your nearby MAC store up there and ask to confirm if 5/27 is indeed the release date?

Also, you could try asking the Live Chat service on the MAC website. It’s located at the lower left hand corner of their website:

Just wondering if anyone has any good treatments for blackheads? πŸ™ oh and whiteheads? πŸ™
actually any sort of blocked pores? πŸ™ lol
i generally have nice skin ( knock on wood or ill prob get some volcanoes on my face now lol ) , dont get 2 many pimples anymore, although im sure my skin is destined 2 get them here and there 4 the rest of my life πŸ™ but i still cant find anything that gets rid of the little annoying blackheads and whiteheads ahh theyre soooo…ehhh i dont even have word 4 them!!!

Please help with any tips or products u guys love πŸ™‚

    Thanks πŸ™‚

    • Karen says:

      Hi Lee,

Do you exfoliate? A good exfoliator might help keep your pores clearer. You could try a salicylic acid toner like Clinique’s Mild Exfoliator (LOVE) or a scrub.

      • Lee says:

        Hey Karen,
yeh i exfoliate every second or 3rd day and i also use cliniques blemish toner which is really good, but even when i steam my face and the blackheads clear theyre back within a couple days πŸ™

        what scrub do u recommend?

ive been wanting 2 try microdermabrasion 4 so long cos i heard thats really good 4 them, do u know anything about it?

        • yiota says:

I used to have a lot of blackheads on my nose but i’ve had less of them ever since i’ve started doing these things:
-Using my clarisonic brush once a day (since february)
-Exfoliating once – twice a week
          -Using a face mask once-twice a week

          • Lee says:

ive read about those clarisonic brushes but i havent seen them anywhere here in aus, actually i wonder if ebay has them hehe

    • Karen says:

Yes I did. I really liked the clothes, but didn’t bring any home with me.

BTW, BB beach ROCKS! If you like it you also might like Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess.

      • Haley says:

Ooh.. What sucks is that when I went they were sold out of more than half of the collection, which sucked! And woo yes that perfume DOES rock, it reminds me of sunscreen and tanning oil.. In a good way πŸ™‚

Speaking of obsessions . . . I am obsessed with Chanel cosmetics lately! It is an expensive obsession! So far I only have 2 glosses and 2 lipsticks — but I fantasize about owning all of the eye quads, blushes, everything from their summer collection . . . What’s a girl to do?? lol

  23. yiota says:

        haha its really great!
It makes your skin soo soft and it even has tiny pieces of almonds that you could use to exfoliate your skin while washing it off! I think I prefer it over Cupcake, which was the 1st one i tried.
Only thing i kind of hate about them is that they expire in 2 weeks because they’re so fresh πŸ™

        • Agnes says:

mm almonds! that sounds great! maybe i should stop by lush and pick some up πŸ™‚ yeah.. i’ve heard they expire fast πŸ™ i guess its a good thing cause its fresh… but i agree with you, 2 weeks is a bit short! specially if you’re busy and dont have time for masks everyday! i’ve also heard you should keep them in the fridge.. is this true? thanks for replyingg πŸ™‚

          • yiota says:

yup! you have to keep them in the fridge..you’ll see at the Lush store they have them in a little fridge or on ice! I’m pretty sure you can still use them after their expiry date since they’re in the fridge.. I’ll keep using mine for an extra week or so. I’ve only been putting it on twice a week..maybe i should do more loll.

  24. Rica says:

Lately I’ve been obsessed with getting back in shape. I have looked back to pictures when I was bigger, and girl, I never wanna go back! I’m kind of worried about having babies, I mean the weight gain part, not that I’m planning to have one soon (I’m not even married yet LOL). It makes me wonder how Jessica Alba and Angelina Jolie got back in shape in such a short period of time. Even though, they’re rich and stuff, I still think they must have worked really hard to get those figures back!

Speaking of figures, apparently Kim K’s booties ain’t real. But isn’t that weird to get a hip injection and not a lipo? Although it made sense because now they’re making more money because they are promoting Quick Trim LOL.

On another total random note, do you think I should get Coral Crepe Paint Pot. I kinda want it, but I’m just not sure if I would get a lot of use out of it.

Oh, and I have another question. What eyecream would you recommend? I seriously need to find something that works!

I had fun being totally random LOL

OMG, my stomach, which is full of tea and oatmeal is growling from reading all these posts about those chocolate hazelnut things. I have gone sugar free from a whole week.

I am trying this fitness thing, and I cut out sugar and dairy. It is amazing how much refined sugar I was eating, without knowing it. Now that I am reading labels like a crazy woman in the grocery store, sugar is in EVERYTHING!!!

I’ll be ok, I am going to go read about carrots and broccoli on a vegan blog and see if it gets me excited.
