The Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll for December 1, 2014

You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. What’s one keepsake you absolutely treasure?
I have this groovy dress that my mom used to wear back in the ’70s. It’s an a-line mini in a beige lace material with an oversized ’70s-style collar, pearl buttons and sheer sleeves.

She gave it to me when I was in high school, and I’ve kept it with me all these years, through 10+ moves.

I’m not normally very sentimental about my clothes, like it’s easy for me to say goodbye to clothes and pass them along to others to love, but I love this dress. My mom designed it for herself and took the design to a seamstress to have it made when she still lived in the Philippines.

I can see her now, my mom, a newly married young woman in the ’70s, tooling about town in her groovy mini dress. Maybe in some wedge heels! 🙂

  2. Who’s the most generous person you know?
El Hub. That man would give you the shirt off his back, even if it meant he would freeze to death.
  3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch! What kind of jelly would you like?
Raspberry for me! — or strawberry, if we’re out of raspberry, and if we don’t have either one, marmalade will do.

Just please, no grape jelly. I’m NOT feelin’ that with my PB&J.

  4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a complicated piece of Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards?
Uh…both sound pretty miserable to me, but I guess cleaning out the garage? It would be dirtier, yes, but less mentally taxing.
  5. Something you feel passionate about?
Writing about makeup (obvs), and talking about it, and wearing it, and shopping for it, and taking pictures of it. After almost eight years of talking about makeup on a daily basis, I still enjoy it.

I’m also passionate about adopting strays and shelter animals. Every one of the animals I’ve been lucky enough to assist over the years has been a former stray.

There are so many great cats and dogs out there waiting to be loved!

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

December…

I KNOW! It’s like it silently moonwalked into the room when I was looking the other way.

Have you put your tree up yet? I did go to Target last weekend and got some new ornaments, stockings and lights, but no tree yet. Hopefully, tonight or tomorrow. That’s what we’ve been talking about.

The new Christmas tree balls I got are allegedly shatter-resistant, but we’ll see about that… Tabs is the ultimate durability test.

He always swats at the ornaments and also LOVES to drink water from the tree stand, even though he knows it’s strictly forbidden.

Cats…

Have a good one today, whatever you’re up to. Try to stay warm out there!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I have these two jade green swan paperweights. They’re really sleek and modern, and they belonged to my late grandmother. When we all finally got the courage to clean out her house, my aunt asked everyone if there was anything we’d like to keep. I desperately pleaded for the paperweights, because my grandma used them as decoration on her coffee table, and I would play with them all the time when I was little. Surprisingly, I was the only one with precious swan paperweight memories, so no one fought me on it! I also wanted to keep this set of keys that opened a cupboard where I used to hide my toys so no one could find them. I wear them as a necklace 🙂
    2. Who’s the most generous person you know?
My dad. And my boyfriend. Both are the type of people that have to be stopped, otherwise they’ll give every penny they have away. My dad has always run himself ragged to make sure that my sister and I have everything we need.
    3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. What kind of jelly would you like?
Can I choose Nutella? haha I don’t particularly like peanut butter.
    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards?
Ikea. At least I’ll be in an air conditioned space with food and tv.
    5. Something you’re passionate about?
Women’s rights. Pet adoption. Healthcare. Makeup, obviously! 🙂

Oof. My mom wanted to take advantage of my sister being home, so we put our tree up on Black Friday! Funny you should mention Tabs drinking the water. Phoebe likes to army crawl under the tree and fight the branches. At least, I think that’s what she’s doing… she just bucks and growls and shakes at the tree!

    • Karen says:

LOL, army crawl. Why are pets SO WEIRD about Christmas trees?

How was your T-day? Did you have fun with with your family? And how did the ribs turn out?

      • Estefania says:

I don’t know about pets. Our other dog, Nicholas, peed on the Christmas tree ONCE when he was a puppy and then never bothered another Xmas tree again. But Phoebe has declared war!

T-Day was awesome 🙂 My mom makes the ribs with a rosemary, basil, and garlic rub, and the traditional family shrimp alfredo. I’m so curious about that crab you and El Hub cooked!!

        • Karen says:

How odd! Maybe there’s something about the branches ignites primitive urges? That’s what I think happens with Tabs. There’s something about hanging out underneath tree branches that brings out his inner lion, lol.

OK, so your mom’s dinner sounds like it was BOMB. I would’ve been all over that shrimp alfredo, yo! “Calorie count be damned” was my motto through the entire day. I ate enough crab for four people! We ended up getting pre-cooked Dungeness crab from Costco; all I had to do was steam it briefly before serving. We ate it with butter and salt, but I also dipped it gravy, too. It was surprisingly tasty.

          • Estefania says:

I love crab so. much. haha!

            That sounds delicious!
Btw, I’m so heartbroken over last night’s TWD. My mom always watches with me and she NEVER gets attached to TV shows (hasn’t shed a tear over a movie or show since I can remember), and she was so upset last night!
I still can’t believe it happened. Did you watch?!?!?!

          • Karen says:

Yeah, I was shocked. SHOCKED. 🙁 I wish Beth didn’t do what she did. But the apocalypse changes you, man. Did you watch The Talking Dead afterwards?

          • Estefania says:

I haven’t watched The Talking Dead yet! It didn’t come on ’til midnight where I live, so I recorded it to watch later tonight.
Btw, did you notice the parallel between Rick/Officer Bob and the Terminians/Bob??? It gave me chills…
What’s weird is that when I saw Beth do that, all I could think was, “No, should’ve done the neck.” I still think that officer lady overreacted. Way, WAY overreacted. Also, Daryl broke my heart. I was convinced there was something between them. What do you think?

  2. Agata says:

Hi Karen and Happy Monday and cheers to a day off over here!

    1. What’s one keepsake you absolutely treasure?
I don’t think I have any keepsake that means a lot to me.

    2. Who’s the most generous person you know?
My friend John (the one who just got married), he is the most selfless person I know. My husband would be right after him.

    3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. What kind of jelly would you like?
Strawberry although I have never had a PB&J sandwich…The idea just doesn’t appeal to me and it’s not a thing in Poland so I didn’t grow up eating it.

    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards?
I would definitely pick putting together IKEA furniture, I know it’s not easy but I hate spiders and spider webs and dust!

    5. Something you’re passionate about?
Makeup, of course would be my biggest passion. I think I am generally a very passionate person, also in relationships with other people.

Yay for December and my birthday week 🙂

I think we are not going to have a Christmas tree this year. We dragged ours out on Saturday and we found out that one light is missing (it’s a pre-lit tree), we tried to find a replacement light but to no avail. Then we decided to buy a new string of lights and replace the one with the missing light but it turns out that the original string is attached to the tree so well that it’d take hours to take it off and it wasn’t worth the time. We might get a new tree but they are so expensive and with Christmas around the corner and spending so much money on gifts, I don’t know if a new tree is in the budget. We did put our outside lights up though!

    1. What’s one keepsake you absolutely treasure?

Probably my childhood photo’s … I’m not much of a keeper.

    2. Who’s the most generous person you know?

Definitely my husband to a fault .. I think people take advantage of that, but eventually he learns.

    3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. What kind of jelly would you like?

Strawberry or raspberry, lost my taste for grape.

    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards?

Ugh, neither .. lol, but if I had to pick, Ikea.

    5. Something you’re passionate about?

Health and nutrition. I read every book on the subject.

December most certainly did silently moonwalk into the room! I can’t believe it’s here already!

    1. What’s one keepsake you absolutely treasure? I have a stuffed killer whale that my parents got me when I was 9 years old. I named him Keiko and have slept with him every night since I was 9… almost 20 years! My husband says it’s not embarrassing, but I’m pretty sure he secretly thinks it is.
    2. Who’s the most generous person you know?
My husband! He is so giving of his time and belongings. He never thinks twice about donating or giving you his full attention. He is amazing. The first time I saw him exhibit his love for people is when we were still newly dating, we stopped at a gas station, he was filling up gas and a homeless man walked up to him and told him he liked my husband’s shoes. My husband had just purchased these shoes, but he slipped them off his feet right there and gave them to this man. I was in awe. He’s definitely taught me a few things on selflessness.
    3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. What kind of jelly would you like?
Concord grape jelly for me, please!
    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards?
I’d rather put together Ikea furniture. Spiders are my #1 fear, and provoke panic attacks when I see one. Fun fact: last weekend as I was walking the dogs, I walked through a spider web and a spider was chilling ON MY FACE unbeknownst to me throughout the walk. Panic mode set in once I felt it crawl down my nose.
    5. Something you’re passionate about?
MAKEUP! And rescuing animals. One day I hope to live on a large farm and have a haven for all sorts of rescued animals. Especially pet piggies.

  5. Debra says:

    1. What’s one keepsake you absolutely treasure? In all fairness, I have to state two:
One is the handmade journal from my son in 1st grade. Pressed paper that was then dyed indigo blue and pressed flowers atop it. I used to have it atop my desk but saw it was getting faded (!) and dusty so it now is wrapped in tissue paper and kept in a keepsake box.
Two is the handmade “jewelry box” from my daughter in kindergarten. Cardboard box covered with paper that has the look of Chanel’s Atmosphere nail polish with little Christmas doo-dads on top. I keep other precious keepsakes in it!

    2. Who’s the most generous person you know? Dear dear Husband.

    3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. What kind of jelly would you like? Blackberry, no seeds.

    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards? Clean out the garage. I’d be wearing gloves and a moon suit.

    5. Something you’re passionate about? Any creative endeavor that expresses my passion.

    Happy December, Karen!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Debra,

Happy December to you too! I kind of love that your dear daughter’s jewelry box has a Chanel Atmosphere vibe to it. Funny that you should mention that shade because I did some mega-cleaning yesterday and found Atmosphere hidden away in a bag. Need to bust it out soon! 🙂

  6. Stephanie Smith says:

    1. What’s one keepsake you absolutely treasure? Oh I have a lot of keepsakes, I’m very sentimental about things. I have a stuffed unicorn I’ve had for over 30 years, my Grandmother’s engagement ring, and boxes of pictures are the top three.
    2. Who’s the most generous person you know? I think my 12 year old daughter, she amazes me with her generosity and loving heart. She’s being raised correctly!
    3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. What kind of jelly would you like? Grape jelly for me, with almond butter.
    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards? Cleaning out the garage, it’s physical so I would feel that something got accomplished.
    5. Something you’re passionate about? Women’s rights, gay rights, pugs.

  7. Shannon says:

    1. What’s one keepsake you absolutely treasure?
I have this rolling ottoman that was my great-grandmothers, and it opens into a sewing-stash. The lid is all spools of thread, and the cavity is full of patterns, notions, and sewing books (some of them pretty old). The outside of it is this crazy metallic bronze-with-an-orange-sheen fabric, with a large floral imprint. SO WEIRD, but I love it! 🙂 I use it as the chair for my desk these days.
    2. Who’s the most generous person you know?
Probably… my Nana (my mom’s mom). She’s constantly giving her time and attention to the people around her. Her hallmark is these almond pastries that are just to die for. When you’re in need, whether you’re family or a fellow church member (or just someone she knows), Nana swoops in with her pastries and a prayer, and all is right with the world. She’s so generous towards other people, too, in her thoughts and words – I’ve heard her describe so many different individuals as “such a nice man/woman/boy/girl.” She’s a bit effusive, and if I get that from her, I’m okay with it. 🙂
    3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. What kind of jelly would you like?
Raspberry, please! 🙂 It’s definitely a fave. Strawberry is good too, especially strawberry freezer jam. nom nom nom.
    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards?
Ikea furniture, definitely. I get MUCH more of a sense of accomplishment from constructing something than cleaning something. (I maybe hate cleaning a little bit, hah!)
    5. Something you’re passionate about?
Music, and love, and family. Also women’s rights, if I find myself in a conversation about it.

Christmas trees… sigh! I was trying to think of something small and holiday-ish to put up this year before we leave town, but I have a hubby who thinks you shouldn’t decorate until approximately December 23rd! 🙂 Last year I had a tiny tabletop “advent tree” that acted as an advent calendar, with 25 ornaments wrapped up as presents underneath it. I would open one each day and put it on the tree and it was AWESOME (hubby was cool with celebrating advent, it turns out). However, this year we’re leaving town a little earlier than normal… so I’m not as excited about the advent calendar method, since I won’t be able to finish it out (I’m kinda OCD about finishing things, I guess?). Ah well. I have a “balsam & cedar” candle that I’m burning in the evenings, and it spreads some holiday scent throughout the apartment 🙂

Also, featured reader!! Woohoo!! 🙂 high fives & thanks!!

    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards? Ugh, I guess putting together the Ikea piece…

  9. Erin says:

    1. What’s one keepsake you absolutely treasure?

My grandmother’s ring. Almost all my jewelry was stolen when my home was burgled in 2008-ish. I was wearing it at work when it happened. I lost all my other grandmothers jewelry, my wedding jewelry, and my wedding bands, so it’s the only piece I have left of my family heirlooms!

    2. Who’s the most generous person you know?

Is it wrong to say me? Because I grew up with nothing, I’ve always tried to work hard as an adult so I can help others. I’ve had to become less generous over time because I was a giving doormat. Money, a roof, a car, you needed it and I had it and suddenly it was yours. I’ve supported friends, lovers, and family in need. Sometimes for a decade. I always felt that if I had any extra or could go without comforts to provide for others than I was doing my duty as a human being. Unfortunately, when I have needed help not a single one of those people has been there for me.
Now that were are very poor again (I was never more than lower middle class to begin with), I can’t really spare much. It hurts but every time I think of feeling bad about not doing more for others, I think about how I was treated. I give to a few charities and my family or neighbors when I can still but gone is the day I bent over backwards for everyone I knew.

    3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. What kind of jelly would you like?

I’m allergic to peanuts so I’m skipping lunch!

    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards?

    IKEA HACKIN’ ALL DAY, SON!

    5. Something you’re passionate about?

I’m passionate about a lot of things:

    1. Giving to others
    2. Wine
    3. Politics, especially human rights, animal welfare, and environmentalism.
    4. Food
    5. Creativity
    6. Sciences, particularly neuroscience as it was my major in college and physics due to my NASA training as well as natural interest
    7. Interior Design
    8. Style in general
    9. Skincare and by extension cosmetics
    10. Health and wellness fields

    • Karen says:

Oh no, Erin! Were you able to recover any of the items that were stolen?

      • Erin says:

Nope! Bad thing is my home owners policy only covered $1k in jewelry because anything over that amount you’re supposed to have a separate policy on.

I miss the items, especially a necklace my Grandmother’s first fiancee gave her before he went to WWII. It was a beautiful rose gold pendant with an aquamarine in it which was his birthstone. It was made to look like a stained glass window with the stone in the flower in the center. Very unique.

Luckily, the person was caught when they were using my identity to buy things. They stole my SS, one of my credit cards, and my checkbook. They were going to do 7 – 12 years in prison for it.

I worked at Nike which was about 2 hours from my house in traffic. The couple who broke in must have known I’d be gone 12 to 14 hours because they used my house to cook, eat, and do laundry while I was working. Luckily, my cats were not harmed by them nor the razor blades and pills they left on my bed. It was pretty scary.

  10. Astrid says:

I miss doing this, Karen! 🙂

    1. What’s one keepsake you absolutely treasure?
A necklace I have from my mom. It was originally given by my (late) dad to my mom, she couldn’t wear it anymore because she wears a headscarf, and I have it now. Everytime I go to a new place or having an important event of some sorts, I always wear it… Somehow felt like they are both here with me! (My mom lives in Indonesia and I’m in Germany. My dad recently passed away in June.)

    2. Who’s the most generous person you know?
My mom. She would help everyone in need, even if it means sacrificing her own well being sometimes.

    3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. What kind of jelly would you like?
I’m not into PB&J that much… but if I were to have one, I’d take blackberries.

    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards?
Complicated Ikea furniture. Hands down. I’m such a nerd in that way, I just love working with complicated stuff. I would even be willing to do that versus going to the cinema, for example :D. Cleaning up, on the other hand, not so much :P.

    5. Something you’re passionate about?
Makeup, obviously. Hence having a startup which is makeup related. Dance (as sport). And solving puzzles :D.

Oh I just saw Kiss&Makeup mention rhubarb jelly! I think I’d like that… it’s most likely sour-ish, Karen. Not too sweet.

  11. TJ says:

    1. What’s one keepsake you absolutely treasure?

A gold crucifix given to me by my dad when I was a kid.

    2. Who’s the most generous person you know?

    My mother hands down!

    3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. What kind of jelly would you like?

No jelly, please! I’ve never cared for the stuff.

    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards?

IKEA for sure. I do pretty well with putting things together but I cannot do spiders and I’m allergic to dust.

    5. Something you’re passionate about?

I’m passionate about helping to create a more just society.

  12. Rachel R. says:

    1. What’s one keepsake you absolutely treasure?

My grandmother’s sterling silver watch with tiny diamond accents. It’s the only thing I have from her. My parents kept us mostly estranged from family, so I don’t have photos and momentoes like most people. My hubby accidentally knocked it off a table when we first started dating, and ruined the delicate clockworks. I can’t afford to have the pieces all remade by hand, so it sits in a safe till I win the lottery.

    2. Who’s the most generous person you know?

    My younger son.

    3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. What kind of jelly would you like?

    Marionberry or blackberry.

    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards?

Cleaning the garage. At least I’d feel like I was accomplishing something. Spiders and lizards don’t bother me. Cockroaches are a whole ‘nother story.

    5. Something you’re passionate about?

Advocating for my kids and other people with special needs.

  13. Trude says:

    1. What’s one keepsake you absolutely treasure? An awesome scroll-y gilt vintage mirror. It’s been in the homes of four generations of women in my family, counting me. 🙂

    2. Who’s the most generous person you know? My mom. Always putting others first.

    3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. What kind of jelly would you like? Strawberry!

    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards? Give me the furniture any day. Cleaning out a garage would freak me and my allergies out! 😉

    5. Something you’re passionate about? Photography. I’ve been a bad blogger this year, but I still have my camera with me constantly.

    • Karen says:

      Hey Trude!

What camera are you shooting with these days? And what’s your favorite lens?

      • Trude says:

I use a Canon 5D Mark II, and my 50mm 1.4 is by far my favorite. So buttery, so perfect! But for portrait sessions I’ll usually rent an 85mm too, so I can get in close without being on top of them. 😉

        • Karen says:

Yeah, that is a GREAT lens. It is one of my favorites too. I love how it captures color and the nuances of shimmer.

Do you ever find that Canons go a little wonky when it comes to capturing purple? I’ve shot with several Canon cameras and purple seems to always be a challenge.

          • Trude says:

Yes! Canons are known to run bluer in their white balance in general. I find reds and purples tough. Sometimes I’ll switch my color setting to neutral rather than standard, to make editing easier (using Lightroom makes it a million times easier too). 🙂

  14. _trina says:

    1. What’s one keepsake you absolutely treasure?
Jewelry – 3 things I wear everyday: my Tiffany key pendant I bought on my first solo trip in Japan, a skull ring from my best friend in Germany and a square ring from my recent trip to Australia.
    2. Who’s the most generous person you know?
The Cuepo family – I don’t really have family here but they were so inviting and welcoming to me during the holidays despite just knowing me for only a few days prior.
    3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. What kind of jelly would you like?
That awesome Mango jam my friend bought for me from somewhere in Spain. It only had 2 ingredients listed in the bottle!
    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards?
Ikea is my forte, sad but at the same time proud to say!
    5. Something you’re passionate about?
Chinchillas. They are wonderful puffs of joy. We are trying to raise money for the chinchilla shelter! 🙂

  15. Kim says:

Happy Tuesday! We’ll be finding and cutting down our (responsibly cared for on a tree farm) tree this Sunday. The boys and I are very excited and they’re already asking if we can have a “big” tree this year. The Hubs keeps saying that we had a big tree last year and I keep telling him to get out the tarp and ratchet-straps. He’s not amused. 🙂

    1. What’s one keepsake you absolutely treasure? I think maybe my yaearbooks. It’s fun to read what everyone wrote (25 years later, sitting next to the person who wrote it).
    2. Who’s the most generous person you know? My friend and neighbor, Janice. It would be impossible to find anyone that was more genuinely concerned with other people’s happiness.
    3. We’re having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. What kind of jelly would you like? I’m going to have to skip the j completely. I like my PB au natural. 🙂
    4. Which would you rather do — spend an afternoon putting together a piece of complicated Ikea furniture with 500 screws, or spend an afternoon cleaning out boxes in a dirty, dusty garage filled with cobwebs, spiders and lizards? Definitely clean the garage. Dirty? Yes. Frustrating? Unlikely.
    5. Something you’re passionate about? Raising happy, responsible, successful kids who will contribute to society and be caring and generous adults. TRYING to do that, at least.
