So…what is the Monday Poll?
Good question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past gazillion years (more than 10!). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a great start. ?
1. The three lip colors you wear most often?
Ooh! — this one’s easy. Pink, coral and blue…
(Yes, j/k about that last one, LOL. It’s not blue. It’s brown.)
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand?
Not formally, no, but I vaguely recollect lining up Dixie cups on the sidewalk outside my house, filling them with water from the hose, and selling pretend lemonade to my friend Karrie who lived next door for the low, low price of three leaves. ?
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer?
The long days. I love that it stays light so long and late into the evening. I swear, I get a lot more done (the only problem is trying to go to bed early sometimes when it’s still broad daylight at 9).
It’s already staying light later than it was. Like tonight I know it’ll still be light when I get home from HIIT class, so I plan to plant the herbs I got for the Lady Sanctuary (dill, cilantro and thyme)!
4. Your signature dish?
Hmm… That’s a good question! I don’t really have one. I wish I did, because who doesn’t love taking special requests for something you’re famous for?
I do get requests sometimes for my brownies, and I make a mean frozen waffle with peanut butter and raisins…
5. Your signature makeup look?
Bronzed/plummy lids with coral cheeks and lips.
Soft glam all day, every day, my friend.
Missing May entirely!
Is it just me, or does May feel like it’s moving faster than usual? This first week went by in the blink of an eye! Everyone used to tell me that time passes faster when you get older, and I’ll be damned if they weren’t right. Why is that? Spring is zipping by at breakneck speed.
I hope that happens to our Monday, and it passes in the blink of an eye…except for the good parts. To whom it may concern, please slow it down for the good parts, like lunch! 🙂
See ya later.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

1. The three lip colors you wear most often?
Hmm, this one was more difficult than I first thought. Transparent lip oils (they make you look so fresh instantly!), pink and nude. A worthy mention are ‘crazy colors’ – there isn’t one in particular, but I do get moods where I feel like something, anything, striking – could be super dark burgundy, foiled copper, navy etc.
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand?
Nah, that isn’t a thing where I’m from. 🙂
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer?
Just like you, the long days – I just feel more awake and like I can do more things in the day.
4. Your signature dish?
Umh… carrot sticks with hummus. I don’t even make the hummus (or much else), so this is just smth I have extremely often.
5. Your signature makeup look?
Some warm tones on the eyes (e.g., Marc Jacobs Scandalust with maybe Kat von D’s Raw power mixed in / Juvia’s Place – The Nubian 1 / ABH – Soft Glam), with a shaded crease in either dark warm brown, or mulberry tones, and highlighted inner corner + brow bone. If I feel like it, I’ll tightline with your fav Noir Intense from Chanel, or TF Eye defining pen. For the face… I like to layer bronzers a lot – I pick a couple which might differ in how deep they are, and define the cheek bones a bit with the darker one, and then fade that with the lighter bronzer. I’ll add some brow gel, and then quickly whatever lip product I can get my hands on before I gotta get out the door. 🙂

Mia says
1. The three lip colors you wear most often?
Mauve nudes, peach/pink nudes and brown nudes (a lot of people would count those as one but they’re very different to me!)
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand?
I would’ve loved to but it wasn’t really an option in the Middle East, where I grew up. I do remember being fascinated by kids in my favorite books and movies running their own businesses – from lemonade stands in Snoopy and the Peanuts to the legendary Babysitters Club!
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer?
My baby turning two! I feel that kids really start enjoying birthdays around the two-year mark, so I’m really excited!
4. Your signature dish?
Khow suey.
5. Your signature makeup look?
Nude/neutral shadow all over the lid (usually MAC’s All That Glitters or Sable) with a matte brown in the crease (Cork or Saddle), black winged liner, lots of mascara, soft contour, a hint of natural pink/peach blush and nude lips.
Kim says
Happy Monday! We saw tulips on our lunchtime walk and were so psyched. It’s gone from brown to emerald green within a few days. Yay! 🙂
1. The three lip colors you wear most often? Clear, transparent pink, transparent peach. You know I’m totally not kidding. Sometimes a brownish nude or berry stain.
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand? Yes, and a car wash. Neither were money-makers. HAHA!
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer? Hopefully, finally building a pool deck!
4. Your signature dish? Coffee frosting. That’s something that has my own twist that everyone asks for (yellow cupcakes with coffee frosting). The rest of the fan faves are just me following other people’s recipes. I’ve had a lot of success with Tyler Florence’s and Ina Garten’s.
5. Your signature makeup look? Boring? 🙂 I guess it would be nicer to say “subtle”.
Leah G. says
1. The three lip colors you wear most often? pink, red, and just a coating of Rosebud Salve
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand? No but I have a friend that stops at every single one he sees!
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer? In August we’re going back to Iceland for our 4th time! This time my parents are joining us for a few days.
4. Your signature dish? We make a lot of soups and stews. Can’t pick just one. Tortellini, sausage, white beans and kale is a favorite combo.
5. Your signature makeup look? I’m pretty bare-faced and natural. I do powder, lips, and eye shadow for work.
Barb says
1. The three lip colors you wear most often? Nude, Pink and Peach.
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand? Yes, I remember selling lemonade and fresh soft pretzels when me and my brothers were younger.
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer? Vacation down the shore. Sitting on the beach or by the pool and doing a whole bunch of nothing.
4. Your signature dish? Ha, don’t have one. My husband is the cook of the family.
5. Your signature makeup look? Nude lips and smokey eyes.
Jane says
I haven’t done one of these in a long time. Things have been a bit stressed. Anyway, here goes.
1. The three lip colors you wear most often? I tend to wear different grades of rose or berry tones or blush tone.
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand? No
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer? The longer evenings sitting on the deck of my house sipping some Blue Moon beer with an orange slice, going to the town pool for a few laps since I don’t do much else exercise wise lately.
4. Your signature dish? i have a few, but in the Lemberg house, we have a dish known as Jane’s chicken (it is actually from my mom’s friend). It is a kind of sweet and sour chicken. I use on the bone chicken pieces and mix apricot preserve with Thousand Island dressing and pour it the chicken, sprinkle some dry onion soup mix on top and bake until done. lately, I have been using Mango Chutney instead of apricot preserve. I serve it with rice pilaf and some kind of vegetable. it sounds gross, but it so yummy!
5. Your signature makeup look? Lately it has been very minimal. I do the base and concealer, bronzer, mascara and lip color. I sometimes put eyeshadow on but have stopped using eyeliner. I find that I can never make eyeliner work for me and it just becomes a big mess.
That’s all from here. I am happy that the weather has finely gotten normal. we had a few close to 90 days in the East and as much as I love the summer, I am not ready for it yet.
Be well.
Ericca says

Suzanne C says
1. The three lip colors you wear most often?
Pink, rose, and nude pink.
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand?
No, I lived in the country during the lemonade stand years. When we moved into town, I was 12 and way too cool for that. (Full disclosure: I have never been cool in my entire life, lol.)
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer?
Temperatures over 100 degrees, 1500% humidity, and the chance that everything we own will be destroyed by a hurricane. Welcome to summer in Florida. 😉
4. Your signature dish?
I think my most-requested dish is either my Enchiladas Blanco or my Chicken & Yellow Rice. And in the dessert category, I do this amazing chocolate-bottom coconut cream pie.
5. Your signature makeup look?
A basic, 15 minute face with either bright lips or a colored eyeliner.
Jaclyn Levy says
1. Not sure it’s a color but just regular clear balm, red, pink.
2. No but my bf and I had a jewelry stand. We had 0 customers.
3. Just one? Fireflies.
4. Chicken enchiladas. It’s what I normally make for guests and bring to new moms!
5. Subtley smokey eye, red lip, lightly blushed. ♥️
Stephanie Smith says
1. The three lip colors you wear most often? Pink, plum, and clear (is that considered a color?)
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand? No, but I will buy lemonade every time I see one.
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer? Swimming, my parents live about 20 minutes away and have a big pool that the kids and I love to swim in. And fruit in the Summer is always the best, I’m looking forward to really good fruit.
4. Your signature dish? Tacos, turkey burgers, spaghetti, a little bit of everything.
5. Your signature makeup look? I don’t wear a lot, but I’m a fan of great brows, tightlining, lashes, really clear skin, and a muted bright lip. Feels natural and done at the same time.
Tatiana says
1. The three lip colors you wear most often? 1. Mauve-pink 2. Berry-red 3. Classic blue red
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand? No
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer? Autumn? I don’t really like summer. Can’t fall asleep with the extra daylight hours and I don’t like hot weather.
4. Your signature dish? Salad? Not sure I have a signature dish. I just cook based on what looks good in the produce aisle and then go from there.
5. Your signature makeup look? Natural looking skin, clear brow gel, mascara and a mauve pink MLBB lipstick.
How did May get here so quickly? I even forgot to pay some bills because I was thinking it was still April. The next two weeks will slow down to a crawl because Dear Hubs will be away for a business trip and time always comes to a stand still when he’s gone.
Karen says
I’m so envious that you can just cook with whatever looks good! I am an absolute mess unless I have a plan. Seriously!
Tatiana says
Well I’m jealous you can look at a palette and create a look. I have to copy what other people do and draw little sketches so I know what color to use and where to put it on my eyelid. Otherwise, I just swipe on one color and mascara and call it a day. And I usually wipe off half a dozen lipsticks before I find one that doesn’t look odd or clashing with my eyeshadow and clothing.
Karen says
I guess it’s all a matter of practice, right? Someday I would love to walk into the Farmer’s Market and instinctively know what’s freshest and what to do with it. Thank goodness for smart phones because I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stood in the middle of the produce aisle googling things like “what to look for in an orange” (I didn’t know that it was all about weight until recently) and “healthy spinach recipes.” Maybe if I watch about 10,000 cooking tutorials on youtube?!
Michele DiCola says
Hi Karen ,
Three lip colors are Coral ( Avon ) ,
Nude ( Bobbie Brown ) and “O “ ( MAC )
Never had a lemonade stand but growing up in South Philly many Italian immigrants made their own !
Looking forward to opening my pool ??♀️ but we might need a new cover !
I make great spaghetti ? and meatballs !
Signature makeup look is black liner , brown eyeshadow and a nude lip !
My father hated this look !
He would say : Did you blacken your eyes ? I did and my hair !
Karen says
Hey Michele,
I need your spaghetti and meatballs recipe!
Mia says
1. The three lip colors you wear most often?
Nude, Pink and Peach
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand?
No, I lived in a neighborhood that was in the city but was a bit gated off in terms of traffic. If we had any lemonade stands, all the neighborhood kids would have drank it all for $0 =)
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer?
Reconnecting with old friends.
4. Your signature dish?
Kimchi quinoa.
5. Your signature makeup look?
Even skin, groomed brows, TF love lust blush or Hourglass Mood Light Ambient glow, massive lashes (as big as Asian lashes can get) and a matching lip.
Karen says
LOL about your comment on Asian lashes, Mia. I have them too, so I know exactly what you mean. BTW I love both those blushes you listed.
Christine says
Yes, May is FLYING! I’d like it to slow down so we can enjoy spring here before the humidity gets oppressive.
1. The three lip colors you wear most often?
Nude, fig, and coral.
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand?
No, we didn’t have neighbors when I was growing up, not until middle school.
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer?
Having a LIFE! My last job was so wonky and there wasn’t much work-life balance. I’m looking forward to being able to enjoy the summer this year.
4. Your signature dish?
Lately I’ve been all about doing risottos (rice, other grains) with roasted brussels sprouts or asparagus, tomatos, and some crumbled feta and pepitas. I like to add chicken to mine, veg for the OH.
5. Your signature makeup look?
Bare minimum – foundation, blush and/or highlighter, a sheer pinkish lid color, and lots of mascara (really been all about Tarte’s Lights Camera Lashes!).
Karen says
Hi Christine,
I’m so intimidated by risotto for some reason! I dunno… Maybe one too many episodes of Top Chef? LOL! It always seems so hard, so kudos to you for it being your signature dish.
Christine says
LOL that was my thought, too! I was intimidated until I got a HelloFresh box awhile back with it in it and that was my start! It needs your attention and takes awhile, but that’s really the only hard part. Toast the rice, add in stock half cup at a time and let it absorb before adding more, stir stir stir, lather, rinse, repeat until your stock is gone and add in parmesan at the end.
Karen says
I think I can handle that. 🙂
I see Hello Fresh in my Instagram feed all the time and often wonder about the service. I’m sure I’d enjoy it but I’m afraid of wasting food. Do you find that it helps you save time/money/effort?
Christine says
Ultimately, yes – I think HF helped us get out of our meal rut and get us cooking new things. And they really do send you only what you need, so there wasn’t any waste (but also no leftovers for lunch!). OH would prep the veggies in the morning and I’d cook it when I’d get home .
We ended up canceling because there’s not a huge variety or choice in the vegetarian box (with the regular plan you can swap out meals) and most of the protein in the veg boxes were from dairy, which is something I avoid (if it’s a small in a recipe, fine, but it can’t be the main part). We were skipping a lot of weeks. The meals were almost always great tasting, though.
Karen says
I might try it eventually because everything I’ve seen on social media looks so delicious, and I definitely need help with meal prep (so little time and energy in the afternoons/early evening). Thank you for the insight! It’s very helpful.
Kate & Bree says
1. The three lip colors you wear most often?
Pink, nude-y pink and fuschia.
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand?
No. Lemonade stands and the like weren’t allowed on military bases. ?
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer?
MICHIGAAAAAAN! I am dying to go dune buggying this year! And on the luge track again! No one is gonna stop me!
4. Your signature dish?
Either stir fry or chicken. I don’t even cook that much anymore but people always beg for those from me.
Dessert wise, I’m always for my caramel apple pie and traditional spritz cookies.
5. Your signature makeup look?
Brown smoky eyes and a pinky nude when I wear makeup for shows. Otherwise….NADA. I’ve literally gone from full face to no face.
Karen says
Hi Kate,
Oh, that caramel apple pie sounds lovely! Do you make the crust from scratch?
Kate & Bree says
I don’t make the crust; I buy it. I have very touchy wrists from lupus and autism so I tend to do pre-made over doing it myself. I really would like one of those machines that cores and skins apples. That would make it much easier for me and I could make them more often. I haven’t made one in about two years as it really hurts my wrists now!
Karen says
I totally get it. And why not use those shortcuts when they’re available, right? I think you can buy pre-sliced and pre cut apples now! I’ve seen bags in the grocery store. It’ll be more expensive than buying a bag and doing it yourself but still could be helpful.
Kate & Bree says
Oh, I could, but because the sliced ones usually have asorbic acid to preserve them and they are cut rather thick, it throws off the taste and I have to cut the slices smaller and the skins off. (ie Yes, let’s cut myself!) I really don’t mind doing the apples as my mom will help (notice my dad never helps but it’s his favorite dessert) but I just want a tool to make it easier so I can do it myself, you know? I hate needing help. I’ve got an independent streak the size of Texas sometimes!
CL says
1. Mauve, rose, pink.
2. No. I’ve lived in hot climates exclusively since the age of 2; even as a child I couldn’t stand to be outside for hours on the off chance of collecting a couple of dollars for lemonade.
3. Nothing, really. Maybe I’ll grow a new flowering plant or two. I live in a place that runs 90-110 degrees every day it doesn’t rain from May to October. There’s also mosquitoes galore, and cicadas that make a hellish racket all day and into the night, from June into September. The cicada thing is *every year without fail.* (In other parts of the country, they don’t have them every single year.)
4. Chocolate chip cookies.
5. Tinted moisturizer, lip gloss, light coat of mascara, pink blush, and light taupey eyeshadow.
Lulle says
1. The three lip colors you wear most often?
Nude, coral, rose
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand?
No, that’s not something we do in France. For one thing it’s a very suburban thing to do, I always lived in apartments in a dense city when I was a kid.
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer?
Usually I look forward to the ocean getting warm enough to get in the water at the end of the summer, but after my experience getting stung by a stingray last September, it’s not on my list! I’d say Sunday barbecues with a glass of rosé.
4. Your signature dish?
I do an endive salad pretty often, it’s a recipe I got from my grandmother.
5. Your signature makeup look?
I try new things all the time, but what I go for naturally is a very natural base (often with powder foundation), neutral glowy lids, coral or peachy blush, and either nude or coral lips, most likely a gloss at this time of year.
I hope you have a great week Karen!
Rachel Runyan says
1. The three lip colors you wear most often?
Super-bright pinks and fuchsias, lavender/purple family, rosy-browns
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand?
No
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer?
Definitely the longer daylight hours. It makes driving at night so much easier.
4. Your signature dish?
I have a few: French toast made with homemade bread, real vanilla extract, and powdered sugar in the dipping batter.
5. Your signature makeup look?
I don’t know that I have one. Alternative glam? I usually do some kind of colorful and/or dramatic eye, matte foundation, bright or alternative lip color, highlighter you can see from space. Shimmer, sparkle, glitter, or metallic finishes are often present on either my lips or eyes.
If I have to be more conservative, my signature look is a pin-up eye with black winged liner, matte foundation, minimal blush, and red or coral-red lips.
Erin says
1. The three lip colors you wear most often?
Berry, Red, Fuchsia
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand?
Nope!
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer?
Not sure, I’ve moved to a real hot place, lol.
4. Your signature dish?
Spicy Lamb Bolognese
5. Your signature makeup look?
Defined brows and lashes with champagne shadow and berry lips with slightly covered skin. I usually skip blush or add a warmer shade to balance out my natural pinkness.
Savannah says
1. The three lip colors you wear most often?
– I suppose natural nudes, mlbb shades and rosy pinks.
2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand?
-don’t think so.
3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer?
– actually enjoy it at all. Last year I caught some infection on my face and summer just happened to be two of the five month wait in order to see a specialist. Any sun exposure would prove to be excruciating later on. So, I couldn’t do anything but barely go from point a to point b. (Home to work.) here’s to hoping I can enjoy carefully timed sun exposure.
4. Your signature dish?
-a few actually. I make a shrimp paella, an asparagus chicken carbonara and my husband and I make Adobo chicken with rice and beans, and steamed veggies. Salads are also my specialty.
5. Your signature makeup look?
-I’d say soft glam, probably? It’s a full face-eyeshadow, liner, mascara, concealer, foundation, highlighter, blush, brows and lips. But I enjoy natural looking tones on my face and I gravitate towards neutrals. Obvs. 🙂
