Are You More Lipstick or Gloss?

Lipstick or gloss?

Do you prefer the wet look of a lip gloss or the full coverage of a lipstick?

Summer influences the decision for a lot of women, with many opting for lighter glosses, tints, stains and glazes when it’s hot outside, and the thought of full-coverage lipstick feels like wearing a sweatshirt in a sauna.

But if you were able to control everything from the weather to the dress code at work, which would you wear more often on your lips?

i am soo a gloss girl

for me lipstick tends to get a little cakey – however in more serious scenarios i feel lipstick is the more appropriate approach

happy almost your bday !!!! whens the big day this week??

Gloss all the way. I really hate when people say gloss is for girls. I love the shimmer, the liquid formula, and the brush. I have full lips and I want them on display at all times. Yummy!

For me lipstick as there’s so often a lot of wind and otherwise my hair goes all over the place. Though I like a nice lustre lipstick :)

  4. 4. redhead said, on June 8th, 2009:

I like lipsticks because my lips are so naturally pigmented, but a nice opaque pigmented gloss is great! I find that I lean towards opacity and color rather than sheer color and glossiness, though. Stains are good for a natural flush, too!

  5. 5. Simi said, on June 8th, 2009:

I love gloss! But sometimes I will wear a nude colored lipstick underneath the gloss to get the true color of the gloss

Gloss or balm, with SPF :)

    Hi Dao,

SPF is always good, especially during the summer. :)

    Hi Simi,

That’s a good trick. Another I do sometimes to get the true color to show is apply foundation to the lips first (although this can be drying).

    Hi Redhead,

I wish my lips were pigmented… so jealous!

    What are your fave lipsticks?

  10. 10. Karen said, on June 8th, 2009:

    HI Karen B.,

Ah, that’s a big issue for me here on windy days. I can’t stand having my hair getting stuck in gloss, blah!

  11. 11. Vanessa H said, on June 8th, 2009:

MAC tinted balms and and good chapstick!

I also looooooooove Smiths Rosebud Salve, it works to keep my lips super soft..and I use it for flyaway hairs and to keep my cuticles moisturized. Love that little container!

    Hi Shontay,

You’re so lucky to have full lips! My BFF has the most amazing, full lips and I was always so envious. :)

    Hi Yadi,

Tomorrow, but to tell you the truth I haven’t been very excited about it… it kind of snuck up on me this year!

  14. 14. Joanna said, on June 8th, 2009:

It depends on what I’m doing, really! If I’m going out in the evening or attending a formal event, I’ll usually wear a matte red lipstick or a more moisturising coral (I’m so upset MAC have discontinued Eager!) In the day or for a less formal event, I’ll generally wear a gloss or a balm and keep my makeup lighter.

  15. 15. Heidi said, on June 8th, 2009:

I used to wear lip gloss all the time. I’m talking every single day with several touchups to ensure hi-shine. Now, I’ve gotten lazy and dont’ want to bother with it. So it’s just lip balm. :)

  16. 16. Meream said, on June 8th, 2009:

Gloss, definitely. Lipstick remind me of the ones my mother used to put on me for school events. They tasted so nasty for my young girl’s taste buds. haha

  17. 17. Ann said, on June 8th, 2009:

    both!

  18. 18. Alison said, on June 8th, 2009:

I really like the coverage and moisturisation of a lipstick, but I also love the shine of a gloss so I tend to layer a gloss over a lipstick most of the time. But if I’m having a low key day I’ll just use a slick of gloss or lipbalm.

  19. 19. Karen said, on June 8th, 2009:

    Hi Ann,

Sometimes I like to do the lipstick/gloss combo, too. :)

  20. 20. Karen said, on June 8th, 2009:

    Hi Meream,

Ha! I remember 80s lipstick being very strong. Then again, I wore forbidden tubes of Wet n’ Wild, which cost $1 and were probably not made of the best ingredients.

  21. 21. Karen said, on June 8th, 2009:

    Hi Heidi,

Lip balm can be glamourous, too! Maybe pop on a lip liner beneath your balm to give it a little color?

  22. 22. Jane said, on June 8th, 2009:

I love lipstick because it stays on longer. I love MAC’s “Hot Tahiti.” It’s sheer so you can build the depth of the color.

  23. 23. Karen said, on June 8th, 2009:

    Hi Joanna,

Eek… I love corals and have never tried Eager. Now I have to see if I can hunt it down!

  24. 24. Daya said, on June 8th, 2009:

I like both gloss and lipstick, but most times, i’m a gloss girl. Stila’s gloss (the Jewel one) is my favorite right now because it’s so summery pink!

  25. 25. Jecca said, on June 8th, 2009:

Definitely lipstick all the way. I even bought three Dazzleglasses with the re-release and I have to force myself to wear them. (I do put them over lipstick when I go out to dinner with my husband.)

I prefer the pigmentation, texture, and look of lipstick.

I hate how gloss feels, and I hate that I still feel the gloss texture long after the color is gone. There’s no way to tell when it’s time to reapply. It’s so weird — I just can’t understand the appeal of gloss, although I know I am the odd one out! :)

  26. 26. Michelle said, on June 8th, 2009:

I like both but I tend to use gloss a lot more. It’s just easier to apply when you’re rushing out the door.

  27. 27. Jecca said, on June 8th, 2009:

Seconding Jane’s endorsement of MAC’s Hot Tahiti. Great color!

  28. 28. Caitlin said, on June 8th, 2009:

While I love some of my lipsticks, as some other girls have said, the caking drives me crazy. Nothing beats a good gloss or a lip oil in keeping lips yummy department. The only downside, the bf won’t kiss me “with all that gunk on my lips!” LOL

  29. 29. Jamie said, on June 8th, 2009:

Right now I have to be a lipstick girl since summer is here and my boyfriend REFUSES to keep the windows closed and put on the AC so I don’t want my hair becoming sticky and gross so I have to wear minimal gloss unless it’s raining and cold :( . Men, they just don’t understand. (picture rolling eyes here)

  30. 30. smiley said, on June 8th, 2009:

I definitely like lipstick a lot more. Lipstick doesn’t rub off as easily when you’re eating, and you don’t need to reapply! It’s less obvious when you’re wearing lipstick too.

I tend to be a lipgloss girl. Though not a l/g, I’m loving L’Oreal’s Infallible Lipcolor in Coral Sand. It’s a nice daytime/summer color. Wears well and not sticky.

Gloss. When I first started wearing make up I was a lipstick chick. almost never wore gloss. as I got older and glosses made a nice comeback, I jumped on that bandwagon and never got off. I have some MAC lippies but i rarely use them, I stick to their lipglass, iplustre and plushglass. :-)

  34. 34. Solé said, on June 8th, 2009:

I’ve been much more of a gloss girl for the past four or five years, but lately, I’ve been adding many more lipsticks to my repertoire, and I’m thinking it’s starting to be 50/50. Also, I often wear both! I was one of the small minority who voted for “Other.”

  35. 35. Marina said, on June 8th, 2009:

Glosses all the way! They’re so much more fun to wear! And they definitely look sexier ;) I own just three lipsticks which i hardly ever use and about 30 glosses.

  36. 36. Heidi said, on June 8th, 2009:

I like tinted lip balms. They’re a step up from your ordinary chapstick.

I’ve always been a lipstick girl. I’ve always felt like lipsgloss’s were much too goopy and sticky. I don’t even like really moisturizing lip balms. So yeah, lipsticks all the way.
