Stila Surprise and Shine Talking Palette Has Something to Tell You about Red Lipstick

Published in: Face of the Day (FOTD)

If you have at least one tube of red lipstick stashed away somewhere at home, you gotta peep the Stila Surprise and Shine Talking Palette ($45).

Because these ivory, beige and brown colors will perfectly balance out a bold red lip.

In the palette you get…

  • Nude eyeshadow: shimmery pink
  • Wheat eyeshadow: beige pearl
  • Espresso eyeshadow: shimmery gray-brown
  • Convertible Color in Peony: creamy peach-brown

In the pic above I’m wearing the palette colors with MAC Red She Said Lipstick and MAC Clear Lipglass. Don’t the shadows and blush highlight the eyes and cheeks without competing with the lipstick?

Stila calls it a “Talking Palette” because — big surprise — the palette talks. No kidding! There’s a built in microphone and speaker, with the idea being that you can record a special message for someone and give the palette away as a gift. Not only does the recipient get the gift of great makeup, but they also get to hear your lovely voice, too. Cute, yah?

Clockwise from upper left: Nude, Wheat, Peony, Espresso

Or… you could keep it for yourself and spend countless hours playing back messages like, “Girl, you are so hot it burns me just to think about you!” 🙂

Dance, Dance, Revolution

In an effort to fight the funk I’ve been in this week I thought I’d stimulate some endorphins by getting in a little exercise, so I’m headed to dance class. We’re supposedly doing a jazzy hip hop routine to Let’s Dance by Lady Gaga.

Speaking of dance, have you ever played Dance, Dance, Revolution? I never have, but I’ve watched other people do it and totally want to give it a try. It looks like fun.

And if you haven’t heard Lady Gaga’s Let’s Dance, add it to your workout mix, ASAP!

Hehehe, DDR is a lot of fun. But it takes a LOT of practice and I’m just not very coordinated in the first place… =/ I love watching other people play though, it’s pretty amazing what some people can do.

  2. Glosslizard says:

Impus Minor loves him some DDR! That little guy just goes off on the dance pad! When I get a chance I’ll grab a quick number… I’m not very good, but it’s a lot of fun and it’ll get that heart a-pumpin’! 🙂

    Nice post, Karen..
Funny, today of all days I decided to shock the population with my red, red lipstick! 🙂
But no eye make up for me today.. I dont want to highlight my big, red, swollen, ant-bitten left eye 😛

    Hi Catherine,

I will have to try it soon. It looks like a good workout!

  6. Karen says:

    Hi Glosslizard,

Aww, cute! I love when little kids dance with joy…

Do you get sweaty when you play? I’m thinking it would be a fun way to sneak in a workout.

  7. Karen says:

    Hi Mukho,

Oh no! I hope your eye heals soon. What happened?

  8. Karen says:

    Hi Katee,

  9. Shefali says:

Wow…I’m impressed. I own one Stila product. Maybe I should check this out.

I feel you on the funk…I’ve been in one all week. What’s the deal? I can’t seem to shake mine. I hope you shook yours in dance class. Maybe that’s what I need.

BTW, you CRACK ME UP with your captions on pictures and such. Seriously. I laugh out loud every single time. Thanks for the cheer 🙂

  10. Karen says:

    Hi Shefali,

I don’t think we’re the only ones… there’s a general funkiness going ’round. If you lived in my ‘hood I’d totally make you go to hip hop with me. 🙂 I feel so much better now, but I think I might be sore tomorrow. My teacher did a lot of body rolls and I’m not as agile as I used to be. Eek!

LOL, glad to have make you laugh! Have a good night. 🙂

  11. Sylvie says:

I used to play DDR when I was 11. I don’t know what’s become of it now. =P

  12. CSB says:

I’ve been dying to try Stila, and I finally got my hands on the Madagascar/chocolate palette from Beauty Crunch recently. I don’t know–the shadows and blush are all very smooth, but Stila as a whole still seems a bit overpriced.

…And yet I still want the Convertible Color. What do you think of it? Yay/nay?

Those colors do go well with a bright lipstick! Perfect neutrals to complement the red.

  13. Marlo says:

I love the colors of that palette. I almost bought it, and seeing these pictures makes me wish I did.

I used to play a lot of DDR though. That game is a workout once your skills are mad enough to handle the more difficult levels/songs.

But speaking of Lady Gaga (I love her debut CD), her new song Poker Face is also a pretty good workout song.

  14. yadiq says:

    you are too funny

i am such a fan of ddr

usually gatherings at my home revolve around video game console dance games lol

El FI ( since you have el hub i have el fi lol) is a total gamer freak so video games are always a staple in my house!

love the look you have going in this pic

i hope you class was super fun ! i had a good training session with my trainer last night – i am really sore today !

  15. Dao says:

I’m always amazed at the talking palette. If I buy one, I’ll definitely record some naughty messages to the receiver, hahaha! I’ve never tried DDR but I really want to, it’s just that I don’t own any game consoles. One of my nephews told me that back in his elementary school day, they had a DDR in the game room and a kid lost 30 pounds from playing DDR. I totally want to rock that, it’s cheaper than a Wii Fit I guess.

  16. Back in the day (late teens-early 20’s), I used to only wear bright red lips and bright red nails ala Gwen Stefani, but before anyone ever heard of her. But it’s funny because now I wear just lip gloss every day (for like the last 8 years) and when I put on say MAC Russian Red or Dubonnet, I feel SO loud and “obvious” it’s weird. I guess I gotta get over it because I love red. That one looks awesome on you. Have you ever used Ruby Woo? Man that one is so bright it’s been sitting in my medicine cabinet for like 6 or 7 years never used, but looked at and admired every now and then. 🙂

  17. Karen says:

    Hi Sylvie,

    I bet it’s still fun! 🙂

  18. Karen says:

    Hi CSB,

I give Convertible Color a *yay*. I like that it’s easy to apply (I use my fingers) and blend. Plus, it goes on really smoothly, even on top of foundation and powder.

I think I’m a sucker for Stila mostly because of the branding… the line is fun and very girly, which I love.

  19. Karen says:

    Hi Marlo,

Thanks for the song rec! I think I’m going to get her CD on iTunes today. Upbeat music always cheers me up (I’ve been feeling so *blah* lately).

Got any more good workout songs that you love?

Here are a few of mine:

    Number 1, Goldfrapp
    Good Luck, Basement Jaxx
Come Rain Come Shine, Jenn Cunnetta

  20. Karen says:

    Hi Yadiq,

OoOOo… I love that sore feeling. I haven’t been lifting weights as much and I miss it. Good to hear that you’re feeling better today. 🙂

Class was a ton of fun! I got really sweaty and worked it out. It was the second day of the routine for me, which makes it better because I can then start to add my own stuff to the moves. Ugh, there was a lot of body rolling though, and I am NOT 22 any more. That sh*t gets harder every year… I can’t get low like I used to, LOL!

Do you and your sweetie play video games together? Does it ever get competitive?

  21. Karen says:

    Hi Dao,

OMG… seriously!? That kid must’ve really enjoyed the game. That’s a LOT of dancing.

    I want one now, LOL.

  22. Karen says:

    Hi Vampy Varnish,

Yeah, I went through that phase too. I thought Gwen was the coolest thing since sliced bread (and still do)! I played Tragic Kingdom OUT. My roommate got so sick of it, LOL.

I can totally see you as a red lipstick girl. You should bust out Ruby Woo and give her some lovin’ SOON!

  23. yadiq says:

girl i so hear ya on that whole body rolling thing lol

lord knows i cant keep up with the newest dance trends

yes we play games together often – wii fit gets competitive btwn us lol

we also are big raving rabbids fans lol there is just somethign abt those funky bunnies that i just love !!!

i also like to watch him play the strategy games lord knows i cant play them but i can strategize the heck out of em the more gory and violent they are the better lol – what can i say – these games are sometimes almost as good as watching law and order svu for me lol

  24. Karen B says:

Consider it added to my workout music list 🙂

That palette looks so cute. I’ve been wanting Convertible Color in Peony for ages…

  25. Karen says:

    Hi Yadiq,

Oh, the wii fit looks like so much FUN! I would so kick El Hub’s butt in all the balancing games!

OMG, the body rolling thing is so not cute. I tried to get low and I couldn’t get back up again, HA HA HA!

  26. Karen says:

    Hi Karen B.,

It’s a really great running song! I like it for both the warm up and for sprints.

I think Peony would look great on your cheeks!

  27. Marisol says:

This palette seems to gimmicky for me and sort of pricey. You are lucky that you can pull off most colors.

I have only played DDR once and it was in Vegas after a night of drinking and shenanigans.

My friends in Australia are pros in DDR, they told me something about 12 legs mode when you have to dance really fast. I want DDR for a really long time, may get it for the sake of fitness 🙂
