There are some dicey moments, but it’s entirely possible to paint yo’ face with a toddler sitting on your lap. You just gotta accept that your new cream highlighter may end up having a big old dent when said toddler dips a brush into it, and one brow may end up darker than the other, and you may not end up wearing as much mascara as you normally would because you almost poked your eye out five or six times in the process. But putting on a full face from start to finish is totally doable with a toddler in the mix, and the results can be good enough for a Target run!
I mostly used products from the new Covergirl Spring 2018 collection for this, and here are some top-level observations…
- Vitalist Go Glow in Daybreak — Subtle, soft shimmer
- Vitalist Healthy Concealer Pens in Warm Beige and Medium Beige (worn as under-eye concealer and as foundation) — Good coverage and finish, excellent as a face concealer, but too sheer for use under my eyes
- Vitalist Healthy Powder in Medium Beige — Natural coverage, looks even better as the day goes on
- Lid Lock Eye Shadow Primer — OK
- Peacock Flare Mascara Waterproof — Decent length and lift, pokey brush
- Vitalist Healthy Glow Highlighter in 6 (worn as an eyeshadow) — Too sparkly…
- TruNaked Smoky Eyeshadow Palette (worn as liner) — Moderately pigmented, and very little fallout
- Ultrafine Brow Pencil in Rich Brown — Sheer but still buildable
- Melting Pout Matte Liquid Lipstick in Currant Nude — Wears off if I drink something or nibble
The non-Covergirl things I used include Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Radiant Bronze and MAC Padma Melon Pink Blush.

That little girl (she’s not a baby any more!) gets more adorable every time I see a picture of her! And I can see she’s getting good makeup lessons from her mom!
Karen says
Thanks, Kellly. 🙂 Now I’m wondering if I can do the same thing with a cat on my lap… LOL!
I hope you’re having a great Tuesday so far. I just got back from a short walk. It’s about to pour so I’m glad to have got some time outside before the rain starts up again.

Karen, you and Connor are SO beautiful! there is so much of you in her sweet little face. Enjoy those toddler years, they fly by and soon she will be playing in your makeup stash as a teenager. Lucky her to have such a mom who will encourage all her makeup, hair and skincare experimenting! My daughter used to climb all over me whenever I sat still, too. Your photos bring back all those vibes. Miss that, since she is my oh-so-independent teenaged girl now. Daughters are wonderful, and, I believe, help to bring out our best selves.
Karen says
Hi Lorraine,
How old is your daughter now? Is she still doing ballet?
Lorraine says
Thanks for asking- you are sweet to remember this. She is 15 now and still does ballet, 6 times a week. She has added modern dance classes at her arts high school, working hard to master a new style. Not much time for regular teen activities, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. I don’t know where she finds the drive for it, I was a complete underachiever when I was her age! Her dad is an athlete so maybe it is from his side of the gene pool? hahaha
Karen says
I can’t believe she’s already 15. The time flies by so fast! I would love it if Connor finds a sport that she loves and works just as hard as your daughter does. I’m gonna keep my fingers crossed.
Does your daughter have plans to do it professionally?
Lorraine says
She hopes to. It’s a highly competitive field but I always like to tell her that the dance world is big enough for everyone to find their niche. Keep training as long as you love it, but don’t forget about all your other interests. Athletes and dancers always need to have a second career in mind, since retirement comes way earlier due to the body’s physical limitations. Fortunately she attends a school where she meets a variety of teachers, visiting artists and creative type students who illustrate this well and broaden her horizons of possibility. Best wishes for Connor Claire to find her passions and follow her dreams!
Karen says
That’s awesome! She’s so lucky to have your support; I love my parents and cherish all they’ve done for me, but they really weren’t into encouraging me or my brother to pursue our artistic passions, and I think the road might’ve been less bumpy if it was different. It’s interesting how you mention how professional dancers have these second careers, because I recently met a woman who was a professional ballet dancer for a big company in New York (I can’t remember which one) who after retirement found a second career as a manager. She now manages the careers of several dancers and does everything from booking gigs to arranging travel and she really loves it! I also know a few former professional dancers who now own their own dance studios and teach. 🙂

You have so much more patience than I do at this point in my life. I think I’d have to buy a pretend makeup table for her. They’re $35 on Amazon (with pretend makeup!); that’s an investment I’d totally be willing to make.
Karen says
LOL, Suzanne! I think that time will eventually come. For now she still loves cuddling on my lap. I’ll take it! 🙂

Coy wolf is growing up so fast! You two are adorable together. I probably would have poked my eye out doing makeup with my girl on my lap back in the day. Heck, I don’t need anyone in my lap to poke my eye putting mascara on.
When I saw Ayesha Curry modeling the Peacock Flair mascara I went out and bought a tube as soon as I could. Meh. It was hard to tell if it was good or not because I hated the brush and it just did not go on well.
Karen says
There were several sketchy moments when I nearly took out my eye! I’ve still got both of them so that’s always a good thing, haha!
Oh, I’m glad I’m not the only one who has trouble with the brush. Am I crazy or does it kinda hurt a little?

I knew I had mastered winged liner when I could do it with a baby in my arms, but I never attempted to do my makeup with a toddler on my lap. You are a makeup maestro!
Debbie says
Aww that perfect toddler skin & hair. So gorgeous.

Ooh I really like the lip colour- it’s a shame it doesn’t last too well. I want to try the Maybelline matte liquid lipstick, something long lasting since I don’t get much time to reapply lip products these days!
