Urban Decay Unsung Hero: 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Bourbon

Published in: Eyes, Makeup, Unsung Heroes, Urban Decay

Urban Decay’s creamy, long-wearing 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils come in a rainbow of gorgeous colors, but my favorite has to be Bourbon ($17).

She’s brown with golden glitter, and we’ve been friends since last spring, when I spotted a mini-Bourbon pencil in Urban Decay’s Get Baked Palette ($28).

Within a month I’d worn it down to a nub!

Ever since then, time and again, I’ve reached for Bourbon (on the rocks, ha!) when I’ve wanted a little sparkle. Its golden flecks lighten my lids in a subtle way, but not so subtle that I can’t appreciate the difference. It’s glitter, after all, and what’s the point of wearing glitter if you can’t enjoy the bling? :)

I love it layered as a shimmery eyeshadow base beneath bronze, gold, teal or brown shadows. Sometimes, when I’m running REALLY late, I’ll quickly smudge some along my upper and lower lash lines (it looks faboo!).

So tell me, have you tried Bourbon?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

this is my favorite 24/7 liner as well ! i HATE zero, it just doesnt work for me, but this one is fab .

  2. Astrid says:

I LOVE Bourbon, and so does my mum! She used to just use a bit of eyeshadow with an angled brush as an eyeliner but when I introduced her to the 24/7 pencils she just loved how smooth and creamy they were! We both wear ours down all the time, they’re just so useful.

I find it great for those of us who just don’t pull off black smudgy eyes unless it’s in a dark club. I’ve got dark brown hair, and medium skin, but it just looks too much on me to wear black all around the eye. I LOVE using something like Sin from Urban Decay as a base, and then line my eyes with Bourbon and smudge. It’s a nice day take on the smoky, simple eye!

    • Karen says:

That’s almost exactly what I wore yesterday to my parent’s house for Thanksgiving! I used UD Sin Potion Primer as a base, Bourbon on the lid and then Half-Baked packed on top.

So cute that you and your mom wear the same shades, aww!

  3. That is absolutely my favorite eyeliner pencil ever. No joking. I literally wear it every single day and I would die if they discontinued it!!!

Yesterday, for Thanksgiving dinner, I wore it on the top and bottom lid with potion primer (of course!!!) and MAC Mineralize Eye Shadow (Duo) in “It’s A Miracle” (eggplant purple and gold) along with Copperized (olive green pearl) from the new 5 Haute High Jinks Warm Mini Pigment/Glitter kit. Oh and I used the Covergirl Lashblast Luxe in Black Cabernet. It looked great! IMHO

Sounds pretty. I have It’s a Miracle and haven’t known what to do with it; I’ll have to try your combo. :)

      Have a great weekend!

      • I love that you make time to reply to everyone’s comments! It’s so personal. I wish I had time to do that on my blog!!

I put the gold on first, under my eyebrow and blended light down. Then I put the purple right into my lash line and eyelid to blend in with the Bourbon eyeliner. Then I blended the top and bottoms colors together with “It’ a miracle”. I wish I had taken pics because it came out great!

I never thought to try blending 3 colors, but I see you do it all the time and thought I would give it a try. :-)

That sounds very pretty! I love doing purples/golds together, and I bet Bourbon’s sparkles add a nice kick to the look. :)

How’s your weekend going so far? I can’t believe tomorrow is already Sunday, boo!

  4. Catherine says:

I haven’t tried Bourbon yet, but I just ordered the Get Baked palette off Hautelook so I’m excited to try it! The only UD 24/7 I have right now is Stash, which I positively adore – it works so wonderfully with all my golds, browns, taupes, greens, etc. Love it.

  5. Marce says:

I got Bourbon in the 24/7 Velvet Rope set last year, and I really like it. So pretty! I’ve yet to try it all smudged, like you say. Other brown liners with glden sparkles I like are MAC’s Teddy and Clinique Chocolate Lustre.

  6. Hyzenthlay says:

Karen, you already knowy love of Bourbon :) can’t fully describe how much I love it!

    • Karen says:

Hee! I had a feeling you’d pop by and say something if I featured this color.

I wore it yesterday along with Sin PP and Baked Eyeshadow to Thanksgiving dinner! I think it’s my new favorite quickie look.

How was your day? Did you do any black Friday shopping?

      • Hyzenthlay says:

That’s definitely the look I featured A LOT over the past week! And I’ve started a new love affair with Underground :) I don’t think it will replace my love for Bourbon, but . . . oooo, it’s a wonderful color too!

Now we’re back home from OR and WA to see the families. We drove from my parents to my boyfriend’s parents yesterday, so no shopping for me. Although I am wishing that I had been able to order the new MacBook I’ve been lusting after for nearly a year. Their website didn’t work for me each time I tried though, so . . . oh well!

        • Karen says:

Ahh, family time. I hope that there was a ton of food up in the mix!

That’s a bummer about the computer. Perhaps it’s a sign from the universe that you’re meant to get it later, at an even *steeper* discount. :)

          • Hyzenthlay says:

            So much food :)

And I like the way you think about it! I’d REALLY like to get one before Winter Vacation this year, so that I can get it all set up then, and have it for second semester when I’ll have an extra prep period (a student teacher is taking over for one class every day).

  7. Shivotra says:

karen you made some changes to site…i like.
i don’t know i have always been kind of hesitant to try brown pencil liners…although i should because i got a couple from the UD stash~

    • Karen says:

Thanks! The changes are pretty new — just put ‘em in last week. :)

Do you skip brown pencils because you’re more of black eyeliner girl? You can make this dramatic if you layer it beneath other shades!

      • Shivotra says:

I’m totally a black eyeliner girl. I have like 10 different kinds :) The thing is my eyes are brown, so brown on brown i don’t think does the same as black on brown.

        • Karen says:

I hear ya — I can’t live without my MAC Blacktrack!

Sometime, though, you gotta try a few other colors… dark indigo blue, dark purples and greens make brown eyes pop. :)

  8. Kypris says:

Wow, there have been a couple of suggestions lately that I’m really tempted to try, and this seems to be another one of them. Perhaps once Christmas rolls around…

  9. Christy says:

I was wondering, can you use just a regular sharpener on these pencils, or is the width funny? That’s what keeps me away from most eyeliner pencils, not wanting to worry about finding the right sharpener or worrying about it breaking when I try to sharpen it.

  10. Glosslizard says:

I went out to Sephora one day intending to get Bourbon, and ended up coming home with Stash instead! Now the one I reeeeeally want is Corrupt (currently only in the Super Stash, I think) since it looks like a slightly darker and cooler-toned brown!

  11. Denny says:

Indeed I have and I agree with you, this color makes brown eyes look faboo! I really like UD’s liners. :-)

  12. Karen,
This is my favorite too! I’ve been through three now! I’ve gotten 3 friends addicted to it too! heh heh

  13. Jeanne says:

I love Bourbon! I got it with the Baked palette, and I adore it. (I need to sharpen it so I can wear it some more!)

  14. amy says:

This is my favourite U/D 24/7 liner and it is one of my very first purchases at the Sephora store. I wore this for the whole summer! I love the golden brown with soft sparkles! It is one that I would get full sized time and time again if I ever use it down to a nub.

  15. Lisa says:

This is my go-to eyeliner! I’m too pale to pull off black for daytime, so this one gets the most use by far of all my UD pencils.

  16. BeckBeck says:

Ooh, I’ve got a full-size Bourbon too – one of the first eyeliners I bought when I discovered Sephora! I had a second one from last year’s VIP set, and I gave it to a friend because I had rapidly racked up so many liners I couldn’t fathom ever using them all. I actually haven’t worn it lately… I might have to come up with something to do with it now!

  17. Stacie says:

Ooh, I love UD 24/7 pencils! But I don’t have this one. I use the heck out of Underground. Know which one I really love? Mildew! I got a mini one in a 24/7 holiday set (one of the ones with 3 minis and a glitter liner), and I’ve worn it down to a nub. I was getting all ready to mourn it’s loss, when I heard UD is planning to release Mildew as part of the permanent collection! Yay!! But seriously, I’ll have to try Bourbon soon.

  18. Marina says:

I am waiting for my Bourbon liner with some Deluse Shadows from UD :) Can’t wait to try!

  19. Jen says:

I like Bourbon as well. I had extra minis, so I gave one to my sister and one to my mom. My sister hasn’t tried it yet, but my mom likes it a lot — I think she uses it more than I do!

I like the new brown they have in the Super Stash. Corrupt. I heard they have the limited edition shades in full sizes now!

    • Karen says:

Aww, that’s so cute! I would give one to my mom but she’s not really a makeup person. She’ll do lipstick and some maybe some powder but that’s about it.

      • Jen says:

My mom’s not a makeup person either, but she really likes Bourbon! Go Mom! I bought her the Smashbox 10 piece duo eyeshadow set last year for Christmas, and she uses it occasionally. I’m the black sheep of the family though. My sister hardly ever wears makeup either.

And boo, Corrupt is NOT full size. But Binge is!

        • Karen says:

Yeah, me too. My mom was never really into makeup… the apple couldn’t have fallen farther from the tree, LOL!

We’ll have to keep our fingers crossed and hope UD pushes out a full-sized version of Corrupt. You never know…

  20. Bisbee says:

Bourbon is one of my favorites – I use it a lot top and bottom, in addition to MAC Mineralize shadow in Gilt by Association (buffed WAY down). Then I use black kohl on the bottom waterline – it makes my hazel eyes shout GREEN!

    Love those 24/7 pencils!

  21. Karen, I love every 24/7 pencil I have! Bourbon is a favorite, as is Stash. I keep buying these for fear they will discontinue them. I am hoarding!

  24. Mia says:

I do have Bourbon, but I have to admit I never used it so far. But with all the great suggestions here I will do it soon ;)
Is Bourbon anything like MACs Powersurge?

    • Karen says:

      Hi Mia,

They’re completely different. Powersurge is more of a golden bronze, while Bourbon is more of a brown with hints of gold. Also, Bourbon has these flecks of glitter (Powersurge doesn’t). They’re definitely within the same color family though. :)

  25. Lydia says:

if you love bourbon, then you’d like bourjois’ brown metallics eyeliner, it’s my HG, but i like bourbon too.

  26. Nora says:

After reading this post I took out the bourbon pencil that came w/ UD Book of Shadows and tried smearing it on my lids for a quick look when my SO surprised me with an impromptu visit. =)

I discovered this with the Get Baked palette too – i love this pencil as well. It’s a tie between this and MAC’s Teddy.

  29. EVELYN says:

hey girls, i have a question, can bourbon be used on the waterline? i mean, could the tiny glitter particles irritate the eyes?
