…DO IT! It seriously changed my life and opened my eyes to an entirely new world I never noticed before.
And it’s easier to get into now with smartphones and photo sharing sites like Instagram. You don’t have to use a fancy DSLR camera with zillion-dollar lenses (although some dedicated lenses are cool, like wide angle lenses, telephoto zooms and macro lenses for super closeups). You know what they say — I’m actually not sure who said this, but I think it was a famous photographer — “My best camera is whichever one I have with me.”
Now I see pictures everywhere! — and it’s fun to try to catch them, like when the morning light filters through the blinds onto the wall in my hallway.
Before I started thinking of myself as a hobbyist photographer, I never would have noticed something like that…
I took these pics with my iPhone right after rolling out of bed (still had dry drool on my chin… I’m so not kidding.). It was just too beautiful to pass up.
My favorite pics are usually of pretty mundane, everyday things, but from weird angles, like way up high above them or looking up at them from below or the side. There’s beauty pretty much everywhere all around us if we just look a little closer.

I’ve been thinking of getting into photography for awhile now and was wondering what you would recommend as a great starter camera for a begginer?

Hi Sydney,
There are so many cameras to choose from these days. It really depends on your needs and your budget. This site, thewirecutter.com, makes some great recommendations. I’ve trusted them for things like waterproof cameras before and was not disappointed.
The good thing here is that they suggest different kinds of cameras for different budgets and needs.
If you’re really just starting out and can’t spend too much money, they like the Canon 320 HS for $140. I haven’t owned that exact model, but I have had other similar Canon point and shoot cameras, and they’ve all been great. I have never owned a Canon camera I didn’t like.
I hope that helps. 🙂 I forgot to ask if you own a smartphone, because the new iPhone 5s camera is getting great reviews, and that way you get the best of multiple worlds — a good, portable camera that’s also a phone.

Hmmm…after picking up a camera, what’s next? Picking up an instruction book/manual? What would you recommend? I’d like to be able to spot pictures everywhere.

I agree with you! Photography definitely makes you look at things with a different pair of eyes, and be more appreciative of small moments that make up a life.

Definitely love taking pics! I think that the things that are free like sunset, rain, wind, clouds are most beautiful to appreciate and valuate in Life <3

That’s exactly how i started. I still mostly use my phone for my “365 pictures-a picture a day” project that i have been doing on FB (this is my third straight year). But every once in a while, i do take my DSLR out for some serious experimentation. It’s LOTS of fun!

I love your light pictures! I took a semester of black & white photography in college years ago and was hooked! It really does change the way you look at the world 🙂

This came at just the right time! I started accumulating a ton of photos in my iPhoto, and instead of having them just sit on my computer, I actually just started a tumblr (http://jnnfrcyl.tumblr.com) to share my photos and sketches. It IS quite amazing how much more aware we become of our surroundings when photography is part of our lives!

I got addicted with my macro lens and been taking pics of bugs on top of my flowers in the garden.

I got into photography when I bought my first camera 2 years or so ago. My entire blog is around my photos with some text about me around it. If you would like to see it you can find me on nevenadot.blogspot.co. 🙂
All the best, nena. 🙂

Hey I just got teh new Canon 70D a few weeks ago and I am loving it!
I just put the first (product) pictures on my site and I was so foolish to not bring the canon software CD so I could convert the RAW files to jpeg on my windows computer (my mac already has the software but its at home). So i had to use some trial program D:
Anyways love your blog!
