Just a quick followup to yesterday’s Stila Summer 2009 post. MBB reader Shivotra mentioned in the comments that MAC makes a Fluidline called Blitz & Glitz may work as a substitute for Stila’s new Smudge Pot 24K in Golden Noir (thanks, Shivotra!).
“I have a feeling it’s exactly like MAC’s Fluidline in Blitz & Glitz, which also has gold flecks infused with black liner.”
A girl can never have too many options, so let’s take a look at Blitz & Glitz ($15) and how it compares to Stila’s Smudge Pot 24K in Golden Noir ($20).
Stila Smudge Pot 24 KT Golden Noir vs. MAC Blitz & Glitz Fluidline
Both are essentially black gel liners/eyeshadows with golden shimmer. The most obvious difference has to be the price, with Golden Noir costing 30% more than MAC Blitz & Glitz, ouch!
Blitz & Glitz on left, Golden Noir on right. Swatches taken in natural light.
As for appearance, the shimmery golden bits in Blitz & Glitz are tiny, giving it a subtle, opalescent finish, and the black applies rich and dark. To get the gold to shine through I really have to pack it on, which leads me to think of Blitz & Glitz as a matte black liner with just the faintest whisper of golden shimmer.
Stila Golden Noir, on the other hand, looks totally blinged out, with a higher concentration of large golden shimmer bits — almost glitter-sized bits.
Golden Noir on left, Blitz & Glitz on right. Swatches taken in full sunlight.
And the particular shades of golds differ between the two products, too. The gold in Blitz & Glitz has a more olive greenish gold hue to it, while I think Golden Noir’s gold appears more bronzy than green.
One last diff: texture. To the touch, Golden Noir feels creamier and more whipped to me than Blitz & Glitz does, and I’d even go so far as to say that its lighter texture makes it easier to apply and blend.
That said, when I want to do a dark and intense smokey eye, I’d reach for Blitz & Glitz, but when I’m more in the mood for a glittery golden look, I’d opt for Golden Noir instead.
Both are beautiful products, very much alike, but different in subtle ways.
Speaking of bling
Tabs lost his collar for the third time in less than six months!
He arrived home this morning collar- and tag-less, looking kitty nude. We’ve been buying him breakaway nylon collars, which use a latch designed to come loose if the cat gets caught in something.
I think they might be working a little too well, though, and get the feeling that Tabs has figured out how to take ’em off.
I might have to try a different brand of collar next time, one that’s more kitty-proof.
What about a pink collar with rhinestones? It might be a little froo-froo for his taste, but too bad. Humiliation is his price for losing another collar. 🙂

Hi Karen:
I think I will go with Stila…The mac looks just like plain black gel liner to me..
and randomly, I think you might have made a tiny blooper on the mac link (you typed blacktrack instead of blitz & glitzs…I would probabaly do the same thing since it looks just like that)

Hi Citrine,
Thanks for letting me know — I made the correction. 🙂

One trick I use with Blitz & Glitz is to buff it with a dry brush after it sets up a bit. The shimmer/glitz is more evident after buffing.
Karen says
Hi sdpfeiffy,
I’ve never tried that before! Which brush do you use to do this trick? The 217?
rasilla says
oh, nice comparison of the two, but like the above poster pointed out, i thought it was blacktrack until I read the name! and seeing as i love the glitteriness, think i might try out the stila soon~ (hopefully :))
Karen says
Hi Rasilla,
Yah, you have to look very closely to see the gold bits in Blitz & Glitz. It’s subtle, for sure, but still very pretty!
Sanayhs says
Love the collar!
Karen says
Hi Sanayhs,
🙂 I’m glad somebody does besides me! Apparently Tabs hates it, LOL!
KyaLyn says
I’ve actually used blacktrack fluidline and the gold glitter liner for the best of both worlds. 🙂
I don’t think I’ll be investing in either.
Karen says
Hi KyaLyn,
That’s a good idea. Do you press the glitter into the liner while it’s still wet?
cloudburst says
I have to say I like the Golden Noir better – the MAC one looks plain black.
Karen says
Hi Cloudburst,
The gold flecks are there, but you have to look *really* closely and pack it on!
wehkwas says
Had I the money to spend to eyeliner, I would buy Golden Nior, for sure.
Karen says
Hi Wehkwas,
Golden Noir is lovely. You have some time to save up — it won’t be out until May. 🙂
Shivotra says
I have a bias for my blitz and glitz because its a great dark eyeliner for everyday and blends very nicely with my shadows and I like its consistency. That being said, I can never have too many gel eyeliners so I may as well just get this one from Stila. Thanks for the shout out Karen, I feel so special 🙂

Karen,
Have you tried just tightening Tabs collar? A collar should only be loose enough to fit your first finger in cats (two for dogs). Don’t be fooled by the fur when it’s the right tightness (sometimes, the fur can make it look like the collar is strangling your pet). If it’s looser than just the one finger, that’s why you’ve been losing collars left and right. We’re still on Zena’s first fabric collar. Zena has a dark purple collar!

Omg, Blitz and Glitz is *gorgeous*! I’m not feeling Golden Noir as much, but the MAC was LE iirc?
My aunt lives in Cali as well and one of her kitties loses his breakaway collar on a weekly basis x.x If you find a clever solution, you *must* share!
Rae´s last blog post..I might love GWP quads more than "real" shadows.

thanks for the review! I love my fluidline so this comparison was particularly useful for me 🙂

Blitz & Glitz for me hands down !
Winnie says
hahahha….yeah my cat wears a collar. She used to get out of it really easily until I realized that the solution was that i was being too careful about over tightening. Once the collar was a little more snug she was happy and fine and romping around with an nice pink rainbowy collar!

I have Blitz n Glitz but I’m glad to see that it varies a little from Golden Noir.. I’m sold on the creamier texture.. it would be good for a smokey eye too..
Girl, nothing wrong with a pink collar for Tabs.. for a metro cat like him, it should be perf 😉
He’s probably rubbing his body up against trees or walls. My dog does that when he wants his collar off.

I use the stila smudge pot, ive actually been using it for years!
I love it and it never lets me down.
I need to try out the MAC one though…

I love a couple things about spring but my favorite must be that I can wear sandals! I hate hate hate wearing sox, in fact if I got to sleep with them on my feel end up mysteriously naked! My feet actually hate the sox! I love hot pink toes!

Thanks for all the DIVA beauty tips.
The thing I love most about Spring is watching the
Tulips blossom. They don’t live long but are
Absolutely gorgeous.

Not tryin’ to be rude (I swear!), because I think you’re just great, but Tabs is at great risk going out roaming around on his own. Maybe he could be strictly an indoor kitty? It’s a cruel world out there for defenseless kitties, sometimes. Just wanting Tabs to be safe.
Michelle says
I like the Stila one better.

Hi Karen
i love the mac Noir,i’ve noticed that the shade of a black eyeliner, that the darker it its the more it makes brown eyes lighter in color epecially if you put ontop of the eyelash like and on the bottom of the eyelash line but you also have tu put it on the top of the lashline theres a bottom to it underneath the lashes….idk if im making any sense but if you put it there it makes your eyes even ligther, a picture would explain it way better

i have always been a smudge pot fan so i am excited to try this baby out! i found that this goes on really easy – i just need to invest in a good eyelining brush!
