The oxygen pumped into the air inside those Vegas casinos last week may have messed with my brain…
I developed a deep yearning to start a career as a showgirl, and now I’m totally obsessed with GLITTER.
I know I’m eating sparkly crow right now because I joined the “I’m too old for this” glitter category years ago and have been trash talking bold glittery looks (while still wearing small amounts from time to time) ever since. 🙂
But then I gave sparkly golden Urban Decay’s Heavy Metal Glitter Liner in Midnight Cowboy ($18) a try.
Every night last week in Vegas I’d line my upper lash line with it, and it just felt … right, like a favorite pair of stretchy pants or Adidas Shell Toe shoes.
So here I stand, makeup comrades, to shout loud and shout proud:
I am a 34-year-old woman, and I LOVES ME SOME GLITTER!
Am I the only one? How do you feel about glitter? Let me know in the comments.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

That’s all I use to wear when I was younger, but not as much anymore (maybe my lips). Now I have passed on my love for glitter to my daughter. =D

My old roommate was a die-hard UD fan and she had a stash of glitter liner like nobody’s business. I dared not touch for I work an office job (fear of looking like something out of Rocky Horror… lol). But her, oh gracious. She could pull it off as a NURSING STUDENT! Maybe I’ll venture into that land one day. I love my bright, wild colors, so might as well try glitters too 😉
Karen says
Hi Kim,
I think you should do it! You could totally rock the glitz and glam. 😉
Bada says
I love glitter. I use it all over.
Citrine says
haha, I just bought 6 tubes of too faced glitter eyeliner yesterday…
I think I like it in eyeliner but not so much as in eyeshadow (main reason being I don’t know how to wear it without looking tacky.) I don’t mind it in nail polish but sometime it can be a pain in the rear to remove.
Laura Benedict says
If you’re too old, then I can wear it because I qualify for the old-enough-to-be-eccentric excuse! It would probably spread to my nose, cheeks, and chin. Maybe on New Year’s Eve–underneath the lampshade.
I’ll bet you looked great in Vegas. Go, you!

i’m 18. And though glitter seems lotsa fun, I don’t really like it coz it’s messy and hard to control. I do use glitter eyeliner n mascaras occasionally though.

Glitter gets a standing ovation from me! =D I don’t wear a ton of it (my everyday look is VERY natural… it’s sleep or pretty makeup, and sleep wins 99.9% of the time) but when I do, I wear the heck outta it!
34 = definitely not too old for glitter. Keep it up, gorgeous!

I love the idea of glitter. But the mom in me hates the mess. I have given dazzleglasses a go, that seems to be as far as my venture with glitter has gone.

dazzleglass? yes please!
UD heavy metals? i have almost all of them!
loose pots of glitter? BRING IT ON!
i think lining with heavy metals on the top lash line (like you did, karen!) looks great and is just enough for a little flash of fun, but i have been known to shake the heavy metal bottle and apply the products straight onto my eyelid with a paintbrush…mixing loose glitter with mac eyeliner mixing medium to make my own glitter paint!

LOL! that was so cute karen, it made me laugh. glitter is the bomb, in the right amounts. i myself LOVE glitter. i was all over MAC’s young punk =)
Kelly says
I’m with you Karen, I always felt too old for it at this stage in my life. But I do like it in small amounts, and always have. Just not ALL OVER my lid or anything. For some reason glitter on the nail isn’t as “controversial” as on the eye. 🙂

I am 31 and I actually own that glitter 😉 As a friend of mine used to say: Diamnods are OK, but glitter is forever. I think that glitter is a girl’s best friend, and the world is way boring without it.
milaxx says
I like glitter, but find as a 4o0 something woman, I have to use it sparingly at best.
Holly G says
Glitter? Love it.
Office makeup? Can’t help but go for the shimmery colors – even if they’re not flashy.
Night on the town? Gotta have glittery eyes.
No matter how hard I try, I love the sparkly stuff – whether on makeup, in jewelry, whatevs. After all, my advice to my husband when he was picking out engagement rings was to get the sparkliest one he could afford, and my wedding gown was COVERED in crystals! 🙂
Stef says
Look at you, all loud and glitter proud! If it works, use it. That’s what I say.
For me, I feel kinda dumb with too much glitter. I feel like it searches for my wrinkles specifically to land in them and draw attention to them (the equivalent of a big flashing arrow sating “hey, I’m old!”) I’m much more of a shimmer fan.
The only exception? Dazzleglass, of course! I believe God made Dazzleglass to make us happy.

Like it on eyes only. But can’t do the glitter liners as they migrate into my contacts. But I prefer to use shadows sans glitter, and pat glitter on if necessary. My favorite for this is the Nars Hungry/Heart Duo. Fine glitter that stays on my lids w/out primer.
Tavia says
I can’t say I go crazy for glittery makeup but some occasions really ask for this type of makeup.

Rock that glitter Karen! Makeup is an accesory, it’s fun! There are no rules concerning what you can or can’t wear. (I mean, there are, but rules are there to break!) As with everything, a less is more…I think that used as an accent on eyes, it looks amazing. Go Showgirl! 😀

I’m 33 years old and I’m just re-discovering myself (again!)
A little glitter on the eyes gives me that “I’m edgy and cool” feel, sort of like stilletos…plus who else am I going to wear it if not for myself 🙂
Sarah says
I wish I could rock the glitter. Unfortunately, I work in an office where a bold red lip would be commented on, and not necessarily favorably… But I would totally wear it going out at night sometime. Maybe on top of dark eye shadow? And I’ve never seen you not pull something off, Karen, if anyone can, it’s you!
Alyssa says
I love glitter too! But sometimes it’s not so friendly on my contacts, lol.

I never wear glitter on my eyes because I don’t know how to keep it from migrating into my actual eyeball. glitter eyeliners are somewhat better, but a powder shadow that includes glitter (like UD’s midnight cowboy) are out. anyone have any good tips on how to prevent this?
glitter on my lips is necessary though, especially if it’s blue.

I was JUST having a conversation last night with some friends about whether or not glitter has any place in the makeup wardrobe of anyone over the age of 12. How funny. I still put glitter nail polish on my 54-year-old mother’s toe nails, so I think glitter confidence comes from within. F the haters, I always say. 🙂
Meghan says
I LOVE GLITTER!!!!
I’m a die-hard UD addict, so it makes sense. My one issue with glitter eyeshadow is the major fallout that results; I use primer potion, but I’ve found misting with hairspray *very lightly* helps immensely. I’m excited to try sephora’s new glitter eyeshadow brush, as I’ve noticed even w/ the ud shadows & primer potion application can be inconsistent.

Glitter is FABULOUS! Getting older I notice I have to be much more careful on the placement of glitter. (avoid the crows feet.) but above my eyelashes is a favorite spot of mine as well to place a line of glitter.

It may be the fact that I’m only 2wks shy of turning 20, but I loooove glitter when I go out at night & allll the tiiiime while I’m in Vegas! I usually keep it to one feature at a time; eyes, lips or face. I get my nails done with glitter tips pretty often as well. However, I do enjoy a nice colorful matte look for casual days, though.
In my opinion, there is no age limit for glitter makeup 🙂 If you can rock it – Dooo it! 🙂 & from what I’ve seen in your pictures, you can most definitely rock that glitter!
DJ says
I am 36 & I still love wearing glittery eye makeup. I don’t care what people think 😉

I love glitter and shimmer and all things shiny! I’m 36 but i’m lucky to look 25, am scared to think i’ll have to go matte some day.

I love glitter for certain occasions and I never feel to old for glittery nails. I also don’t mind a bit of glitter for lips anytime. I would wear glittery glosses and eyes for the holidays but probably not both at the same time LOL. For me, I never really feel I am too old for anything yet, so haven’t joined that bandwagon yet. I look a little bit younger than my actual age anyways!

There is absolutely a time and a place for everything in life, and although I would never let a large flake glitter go anywhere near my face before nightfall (unless I was in Vegas), I love to play with it when I go out at night! It sits in that same category as halter tops and overtly sexy heels: Keep them clear of the office, but let them roam at night. 😉
Oh, and a quick tip, I sprayed some gold glitter spray on my hair for my wedding, and it looked amazing in the sun, but in the evening photos taken with flash, it ended up looking like white spots that had to be photoshopped out.
Karen says
Hi Sole,
Ahhh, good tip to know! I will keep that one in my “makeup for photos” files!
AND lol about the heels and halter tops. Here’s another one: either go with heels or the halter. Both of them together = whoa!
DLA in OKC says
Mmmmm, this 54 year old woman thinks she should JUST SAY NO to glitter… Toenail polish is my only exception to that rule!
Karen says
Hi DLA in OKC,
Aw, you gotta try it once. Seriously! Just a teeny little slice of glitter along the upper lash line…
Ashley says
What a turn of events. The last last time I commented one of your blogs, I told you I wasn’t a fan of UD’s Glitter Eyeliners but just last night I bought me some glittery eyeliners from Ardenes! For a tween store here in Canada that generally sells cheap headbands/tights… regular tween stuff, the liquid glitter liners are amazing! I think I’ll get myself two other colours and call it a successful week 🙂

Glittery make-up will never go away. Why should it? Such a necessity on Halloween, (some) Holiday parties, New Years Eve, girl’s night out, etc. The office, grocery store, PTA, keep the glitz for sundown. Otherwise – FABULOUS!!!

Louise Gray says
Girl,
I love to sparkle. Bling, bling, bling. When I wear the UD sparkly eye shadows, 9 times out of 10, people will tell me how much they like my eye makeup and what is it. I am 56 years old and I don’t care. I don’t wear the sparkly eyeliner because I have hooded eyes and the liner doesn’t show very well. I have the ammo palette which I get a lot of wear from because there are sparkly shades but the colors are not over the top. There is something magical about sparkling. When I saw the Wizard of Oz for the first time, I coveted those gorgeous glittery ruby slippers. Think of champagne, which is my favorite beverage. It is simply sparkling wine!!! Well, you go ahead and sparkle, I have heard that it adds years to your life. LOL!! Louise
Karen says
Hi Louise Gray,
I love that you are 56 and love sparkle. You’re my glitter guru. 🙂
Riswas says
I’m 41 and just yesterday I had my Urban Decay “revolver” glitter eyeliner on my upper lids and it was the tasteful pop of color that my nude look craved. Mind you, I sampled every liner in the line b4 I bought it and that was the only one that I felt that didn’t look juvenile on me. Yes to (the right) glitter!
Karen says
Hi Riswas,
Sounds like a very flattering color. I’ll check it out!
amy says
I love it. Every time i wear those liners every looks at me and comments on how gorgeous it looks.
Karen says
Hi Amy,
I think I might have to pick them all up! Which ones are your faves?
MakeupVixen says
Will be 30 on October 23rd and I love GLITTER, in every color. I just love adding a dash of sparkle to almost every eyeshadow combination. I like a little sparkle in my lipgloss too, and it doesn’t look like child’s makeup. Like Tim Gunn would say, Make it work, and I make it work with glitter, lol.
Karen says
Hi MakeupVixen,
Happy birthday! Welcome to the dirty thirty club!
Rebecca says
Oh my gosh, I’m a total glitter gal! It took me years (literally!) to understand why ANYONE would willingly wear matte eyeshadow/liner. I’m starting to understand and *gasp* even like matte makeup lately, but I still prefer my sparklies!

I cant believe you’re 34!!
You look GREAT for your age. Not that 34 is old, I just really thought all this time you were at most in your mid twenties!
Karen says
Hi Brittany,
Aw, thanks babe. That made me almost as happy as when I get carded (it happens less and less these days).
maria says
really..34..gosh you look 25 keep up whatever your doing! you look beautiful!!!!!
Karen says
Hi Maria,
It’s sunscreen, seriously. You can’t slather enough of it on!
Alison says
A few months ago, I was debating this issue myself. I’m only 23, but I’m in grad school working on my PhD, and I wondered if maybe it was time to tone down my look a little bit. (I’m really into bright colors and wild looks.) But in the end, I decided that if other academics can wear socks and sandals and expect me not to judge them, then I should be entitled to a little glitter eyeliner!
Karen says
Hi Alison,
MORE POWER TO YOU! I am so jealous that you can pull off the crazy shades and wild looks. I only have the guts to wear them in my living room. 🙂
b says
i am 18 & i cringe at the sight of glitter. when i have eyeshadow fallout with glitter and it gets on parts of my face i go wash it off
Karen says
Hi B,
Aww, glitter can be your friend. When I wear glittery polishes I like to do my eye makeup first, clean up any fallout, and then finish up with the rest of my face.
Stef says
There is nothing wrong with being 34 and loving glitter! I’m 34 and I love it too! But in small doses, I am 34!

Hi Karen, I think you can totally pull it off!
I love glitter and it attracts me whenever it sparkles, but it does not suit me – so I buy and hide it at home. Or I use it for big events like weddings or new years eve.
But I can surely pull off some blings from Tiffany! 🙂
And I rock my favourite blush NARS cactus flower which has the amount of goldglitter I cannot live without.
