Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF 30 Dry Sunscreen: Protect Ya Neck!

July 13th, 2010 by Karen 22 Comments

We may be knee deep in fall as far as makeup and beauty companies are concerned, but they don’t get the final word. The calendar still says SUMMER! Peep this very cool piece o’ summery sun protection from indie line Jane Iredale. Translucent Powder-Me SPF 30 ($44) is a powder-based broad-spectrum (protects against UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen for face and body.

With titanium dioxide, a highly refractive compound common in sunscreens for adults and children, it gets to work immediately, which means not having to wait 20-30 minutes before it’s safe to head out in the sun.

To apply, just pat the powder onto your skin using the attached puff (under the lid). Then gently rub. I usually use my fingers, but the puff also works fine.

Surprisingly, the product’s approved for swimming and sweatin’. Weird, huh? A powder for swimming? The company says it’ll work as long as you reapply after 80 minutes in the water (out of the water, they suggest reapplying every 2 hours).

My favorite thing about this stuff? There’s none of that sticky feeling some lotion sunscreens leave on my neck. Powder-Me feels completely dry and comfy.

I wish I could zip back in time to give my 14-year-old self a few jars along with a Wu-Tang message to “protect ya neck.” Y’all youngins, trust me — start protecting your neck now to prevent neck wrinkles later. Learn from my mistakes [INSERT WAGGING FINGER HERE].

You’ll find Powder-Me in two shades (Translucent and Tanned) at Nordstrom stores and online at janeiredale.com. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I was wondering about those sweating and swimming issues as well…

Anyway, I think I will stick with Shiseido, at least I don’t need to worry about how much power to dust on in order to get that much SPF…

Shiseido makes great sunscreen. Which one do you use? 55?

This looks pretty cool. I’m kind of hooked on the convenience of the spray sunscreen though. It’s so easy to use and I need that SPF 70!

I love spray sunscreen too, especially at the beach. Which one do you like?

We live in the boonies, so our selection is a bit limited, but I’ve been happy with the Coppertone UltraGuard Continuous Spray SPF 70+ for me and the Kids’ Continuous Spray SPF 50 for the boys. Honestly, I think they’re pretty much identical. Btw, I googled it to be sure I had the names right (it’s quite a lot to remember)!

@Cistrine, what do you use from Shisiedo?

I cannot be bothered to reapply so often, so this is a no go for me.

      Hey Mel,

Just wanted to weigh in my 2 cents! I am a long-time user of Shiseido 55+, which I loooove. I reviewed it a few years back:

Happy Hump! The bestie and her kid visited me here @ the office at lunch – great timing because I was pulling my hair out over a report im making!

I have a pressed mineral powder from Jane Iredale that I like a lot … 🙂 Its here at my desk at work and I use it for quick touch ups during the day when my face looks like an oilwell! 🙂

That Magic Mitt though is all kinds of awesome – no cleansing product required, just mitt and water and make up is gone! 🙂

powder seems tricky, esp when u dont know how much to put on. and wouldn’t the powder get on ur clothes, esp if ur wearing a white shirt lets say?

      Hi Kelley,

The attached puff helps regulate how much comes out. I haven’t really had any trubs with it getting on my shirts, either — it’s weird, because it just kinda sinks in rather than sitting on top of the skin.

I love this idea, I’ve been on a suncreen kick since last summer (better late than never!) and I’m always willing to try new products with sunscreen for the face. Lately I’ve been using MAC’s Prep and Prime Face Protect SPF 50 and I love it! It’s got like 16% Zinc Oxide which is great for sun protection and a big plus in my book! I’m very pleased with this primer cos it’s light and keeps my make-up on through the work day! I’m curious to try the Powder-Me for days that I want to lay out by the pool and go for a swim, thanks for the review Karen!

      Hi Van,

Sure thing. Good to know that Prep+Prime works well. I haven’t always had the best luck w/MAC skincare but there are some gems!

I have not tried this product, but I use Peter Thomas Roth’s Instant Mineral Powder spf 30 for Oil/Problem skin. Sunblock almost always breaks me out, but this stuff WORKS and it doesn’t feel disgusting! It’s easy to apply over makeup or by itself with a built-in brush, and it travels well (it’s not a liquid, so you can take it in your carry-on).

I wore it every day on the beach on a trip to the Virgin Islands last year, and didn’t have an ounce of sunburn on my face, which was not the case on my shoulders, where I used spray-on sunblock. It lasts forever, and is worth every penny of the $30 it costs.

Sounds like a great alternative to spf creams which can sometimes break me out, but $44? thats a little steep for me:/

Very interesting..especially the fact that they claim it can protect you for 80mins in water when it’s a powder! I’d love to see that tested. You going surfing any time soon Karen? =P

But it does sound like a lovely alternative to slapping on smelly, greasy sunblock! I’m currently trying to finish my Chanel UV Essentiel Protective UV Care Anti Pollution SPF 50/PA+++ sunblock. IT STINKS.

The ingredients zine oxide and titanium dioxide both play a vital roll in protecting you against UVA and UVB rays. Always look for these in the ingredients.
