What’s an unsung makeup hero? For me, it’s an oftentimes underrated makeup morsel, a permanent collection product that scoots under the radar screen of many makeup lovers but regularly rocks my world. The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorites.
Y’all…with the 15% off VIB sale happening now, I know you’re busy playing chicken with your Sephora cart, but please take a moment to consider one of the most underrated (and best!) tools the mother ship has to offer — the $6 Biodegradable Pencil Sharpener, otherwise known as “the pencil sharpener that elevated my winged liner and saved me from a lifetime of makeup misery.”
It’s the only makeup pencil sharpener I’ve ever owned that I haven’t wanted to hurl across the room.
What it is:
A professional-grade, two-in-one pencil sharpener made of an innovative, biodegradable, and sustainable bio-polymer.What it does:
The Eco Biodegradable Sharpener is a perfect accessory to your cosmetic collection. This sharpener not only accomodates a multitude of pencil sizes, but you can feel confident knowing that you are also helping the environment when you dispose of it. The corn-based PLA body of this sharpener is biologically degradable, while the blade is recyclable. Made in Germany, the carbon steel blades give your pencils the perfect pointed tips for flawless application. What else you need to know:
This sharpener can be used with a multitude of pencils, sized from 8mm to 12mm. It includes a removable pick tucked neatly into the body to help dislodge the toughest pieces of shavings and lead from the blade.
Sharpest tips EVRRRR
Every successful kitten flick I wore this summer, I totally owe to this sharpener. You know how sometimes you’ll sharpen a pencil, and the end will get nice and pointy but then immediately when you run it across your skin the tip breaks off? That happens to me all the time…but never with this sharpener. The blades whittle dull tips into sharp points with just a few twists and turns, yet they still hold back juuuuuust enough from going past the point of no return.
3 more things to love
- The attached green pick. Wish all sharpeners came with one because it easily removes any pieces stuck to the blade.
- The open design. It forces me to clean out the sharpener right then and there, so unlike the UD Grindhouse or Make Up For Ever sharpeners I was previously using, there’s no risk of shavings exploding all over my makeup bag.
- The price. It’s so affordable! And with the 15% VIB discount, it’s an even better deal than usual.
I’m grabbing two when I hit up Sephora tomorrow.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

When you get ready to discard this sharpener, you should test out how biodegradable it really is. I suppose you could put it in a cup of water to see if all but the blades dissolve. The blades wouldn’t really be biodegradable.

I’m surprised this is made in Germany. For most sharpeners, the blades are made in Germany but, aside from a couple of manufacturers, the body and assembly (and country of origin) is China. We’re also seeing a ton of other PLA options out of China (toothbrush, razor and makeup brush handles). It’s extensively used in 3D printing. At room temp, it would apparently take hundreds of years to biodegrade but, if buried deep in a soil with a lot of microorganisms and heat of 60 degrees celcius or higher, it starts to biodegrade in about 6 months. That’s what I’ve read while checking it out for brush handles, anyway. 🙂 Regarding the sharpener, the important thing is that it works. The fact that it’s more biodegradable than standard plastic sharpeners is a bonus, imo. 🙂

but why don’t they sell it in *every* dang sephora store in the country?! I just checked it out, assuming it’d be sold everywhere, but it’s not sold anywhere for over 100 miles around me!!! Grrrrr… C’mon sephora – it’s your house brand, and something like that should be sold everywhere, even in the lil JCP sephoras, which is all we have right here.
Phooey….

Argh, thanks for mentioning this!! I live in a fairly major city, so I assumed Sephoras here would have it, but the web site says it doesn’t! Maybe though the web site isn’t updated? I’m trying a couple zip codes and getting nothing.
