The Urban Decay Vice Lipstick Palettes in Blackmail and Junkie for Holiday 2016

“You say ‘lipstick hoarder’ like it’s a bad thing.”

I mean, yeah, my shoulders might permanently tilt on my right side because of my penchant for carrying around 8-10 tubes of lipstick to go grab a boba tea from the mall, but at least I’m always prepared…because ya never know. If I’m ever struck by an uncontrollable need to switch from a neutral lip to an epic red — and trust me, urges like that are right up there with Nutella yearnings — I’ll be prepared.

The Urban Decay Vice Lipstick Palettes look like this…

I thought about this the other day when I swapped out neutral peachy pink Ex-Girlfriend lipstick for bright orangey red EZ (swoon!) from the new $35 Urban Decay Vice Lipstick Palette in Blackmail, one of two Vice Lipstick Palettes from UD this year for the holidays.

It’s so easy to switch your lipstick shade when you have 12 of them in a sleek travel case.

And the palettes also come with a respectable, retractable lip brush, and it’s better than most, because most travel lip brushes are about as useful as painting your lips with a handful of pine needles.

Pretty packaging

Both of these UD Vice Lipstick Palettes — Blackmail and Junkie — are $35 each, which isn’t bad, considering that each one has 12 shades.

The Blackmail palette seems tame, with its lovely mix of nudes and brights, beside its rock ‘n’ roll rebel yell sister, Junkie, with its edgier colors and that cray-cray forest green.

When Blackmail arrives soon, it’ll be holding lipstick hoarders for ransom at Ulta Beauty, select Macy’s, beauty.com and the Urban Decay website, but if Junkie is more of your fix, it’ll be a Sephora exclusive.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the UD Vice lippies are bad-@ss beautiful. I got hooked on them when the Gwen Stefani collection dropped, and I was wearing shade 714, like, 23 hours a day.

They have that soft, creamy quality I look for in moisturizing lipsticks (yup, even the mattes are pretty darned moisturizing), and they drape across your lips like a silk gown on a woman’s curves.

There’s a wide range colors and finishes among the two palettes (Mega Matte, Comfort Matte, Cream, Metallized, Sheer and Sheer Shimmer), and they’re good representations of what the line has to offer in terms of lipstick.

Here’s the thing, though: even though I love the Vice lipsticks, and I like the colors in these palettes and the $35 price, I’ve also come to realize that I’m not really a lipstick palette person…

I’ve been carrying around both of these palettes this week because I freaking love the idea of rollin’ deep with 24 lipsticks, but I haven’t used them very often when I’ve been out and about to touch up my lips.

My heart definitely prefers individual tubes, even to these great big boxes of color.

I’d rather just carry a bunch of individual tubes… I dunno, though. I might be a weirdo that way.

But if you’re a lipstick palette gal, then yeah, these are good palettes.

I’m inclined to point you toward Blackmail, because I think it’s the more useful of the two. The brights and nudes are balanced, and you can probably find something in there to match any and all eye looks.

Does one of these catch your eye? And what do you think of the Urban Decay Vices?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. I’m so excited! ??? The very first round of Connor Claire orders are shipping out this week!! If you placed an order, you should be getting your products soon. International orders, though, will take a little longer to get to you.

I think I’d lean more towards Blackmail too but I am not sure how often I’d use this palette. I love the color choices though.

Btw, my payday is tomorrow and I am definitely going to place an order tomorrow!

These are beautiful. And even though Junkie is a little less practical, I gravitate towards it because the colors are stunning. However, I’m a “carry around 24 tubes of lipsticks” kinda gal. Just wouldn’t get any use out of these. And the OCD anal retentive girl that I am couldn’t bear to see this not neat with no smudges. Let’s not even talk about my penchant for desiring a clean lip brush. After. Every. Use. Yeah, I know, it’s a problem. Still very pretty, though 🙂

      Hi Kwmechelle,

Since you’re a lipstick in the tube kind of gal, I think you’ll freak out over UD’s Vintage Vice Capsule collection. I took some pics the other day and it’s got that edge I think you can appreciate. Granted, I looked crazy in some of the colors, but it’s fun.

Happy Thursday! I’m trying to get as much writing done as possible because I have to bring Connor to her six month doctor’s appointment tomorrow morning. SIX MONTHS! I can’t deal…

I really like Blackmail because it has a few of the shades that I would actually buy in tube form: sheer shame, amulet (!!), conspiracy, 1993 (which I’ve never actually tried yet!), and firebird and Big Bang look kinda fun, plus I already own the OG ex-girlfriend, (it’s my one and only peachy lippie, lol, I’m a plum girl!) so I feel like *in theory* I could get a lot of use out of it…

but then I think about how little product is actually in each pan, and how having to use a lip brush means you’re going to be wasting whatever product you rinse off the brush, (which matters since there’s not a lot to begin with), and how there are several shades I know I would never wear, AND about how I’d be super afraid to throw that thing in my bag for fear of it opening, breaking, or, God forbid, melting (I have nightmares about opening my bag one day to be greeted with a sad muck of $$$ beauty!! ?) and then it all seems less appealing, even if it is only $35. I guess that means I’m probably not a palette girl, either…

the one good thing though, is that since the two palettes are a little redundant (lotta crossover doubles!) that means if I do break down to get it, I only *need* to get one, haha ? thanks for the review, Karen!

      Hi Jonirae,

I think I’ve had that same makeup melting dream, ha!

So, Ms. Plum Girl, do you have a favorite plum? I’m trying to break out of my nude/pink/red rut.

I’d like these better if you could customize the pans in the palette. Some of the shades are beautiful, but some I wouldn’t use at all.

      Hi Jaclyn,

I think that’s the case with most palettes. There’s always a shade or two that you wish could be something else.

Yeah, this is definitely not my thing. I see the appeal, but I don’t wear a ton of lip products, and I’d rather just have several tubes in my purse (which I do, LOL!)

I think my MUA life could use these palettes.

My regular life doesn’t exactly need these, but I have I ever been reasonable when it comes to collecting makeup? 😛

Usually, I am not a lipstick in palettes person and my first reaction Awas,”are we still wearing lipsticks from palettes?” until I saw the swatches and the retractable lip brush. You are making me give things ( lipsticks in palettes) a second thought.

Woot, it’s great that you’re already getting orders, that’s fantastic!

As for the lipstick palette, as cool as it looks and as much as I love the variety in it, it’s not for me.

I bought the Smashbox 25 Years something.something lip palette, (why are people leaning towards declarative statements in lieu of names?) and thought to myself “this is it! I don’t need lipstick ever again” … before that it was the full test tube set from OCC … and now UD has come out with these *cries* … and I don’t even wear makeup everyday

I am a junkie for sure but as a lipstick addict, I think I have to get both palettes. However, I’m not really a palette person but I like the idea of having access to all the colors in my purse at any given moment. I’m still carrying around what’s left of the Urban Decay Vice lipstick sampler that Sephora gave out earlier this summer. That was the best VIB gift evah.

This has been the summer of Firebird for me. Love, love, love that color.

Years ago at Nordstrom I bought an empty lipstick palette case to hold the bits of lipstick that were nearly gone and I just love it. It’s really handy. Perhaps Connor Claire could design a palette case?

No, I’m with you on the tubes. I just find them so much easier to apply. Messing with a lip brush is not my thing. And, remember when I got that great sample UD lip palette from Sephora and I was all like “I’m wearing a different color every day!”? I think I’ve opened a whopping 2 color samples so far. Maybe I’ll be feeling it in the fall. 🙂

I almost hyperventilated when Isaw these. I’m sure I will get both palettes.
Like most of us on these sites, I have tons of lippies, and I love my tubes. But I was going to get at least a couple of these tubes anyway. And most of the shades in each palette really appeal to me, so I can’t pass them by! And I’m with you all in that palettes aren’t my faves either, but for these, I simply can’t resist.

I love the idea of having 12 lipsticks in one palette but I wish UD went with a mini tube set instead. I know it’s dangerous but I’m a throw on my lipstick in the car or a quick swipe in the bathroom kinda girl. I’d be all over the place with a lipstick palette and brush lol. However, the lipstick junkie in me really likes (and wants) the Junkie one. I love the bolder mix of colors
