To the Chanel 51 Montaigne Ombres Matelassées Palette I Say, “You’re Golden”

July 11th, 2012 by Karen 19 Comments

I guess if I were being completely honest with myself, I could probably dupe the gorgeous golden shades in the characteristically expensive new $80 Chanel Ombre Matelassées Eyeshadow Palette in 51 Montaigne with colors already in my makeup drawer, but that wouldn’t be fair to my eyes.

Few dupes could also duplicate the thrill I feel clutching the black-and-white compact in my claw, its surface catching the light like a polished black pearl, its quilted colors luxuriating in their little slots as I breathe a single word, “Chaaaaaaaaaaaaaanel…”

What kind of witchcraft makes seemingly sane women drop $80 on a palette of five eyeshadows?

Oh, yeah, I remember. The kind from Coco.

Chanel cooked up this limited edition cutie to celebrate the opening of their newest boutique in Paris, not coincidentally named 51 Montaigne, after the street on which it lives. The palette comes with five profoundly smooth powder eyeshadows ranging in pigment from sheer to medium.

Yes, 51 Montaigne is on the pricey side of the street, but once its shadows set up shop on my lids, they absolutely do not move!

When I’m wearing these shades, I almost feel like hot stuff, all smokey and whatnot, like I’m getting ready to go shopping for Choos, as opposed to Fancy Feast and butternut squash.

PRICE: $80 (!)

MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B+ (so expensive; plus, I notice a little fallout during application)

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. How are you doing tonight? I hope you had a nice day. It sure was hot out here. I think it topped 100.

I wanted to watch some brainless TV tonight, but I’m so sleepy I can barely keep my eyes open… Think I might turn in early.

I guess the brainless TV can wait. 🙂

Yeah…these look pretty awesome on you and all (I really think you look especially amazing in khaki/olive green shadows. I got Hourglass’ Dune because of how fab it looked on you!!!), but I would NEVER spend $80 on these particular shadows. I don’t think the formula is the best I’ve ever tried and, yes, the shades are so very easily dupeable. I have way too many similar green and gold shades in my stash to justify such an expensive palette!

I always think that expensive palettes like this should really come with better applicators.
Who actually uses those fuzzy things? Even with Chanel written across, I still think I’d prefer to use my finger.
It looks very pretty on, but I don’t think I could spend that much for 5 eyeshadows. I’d feel terrible when I’d used it and the quilting pattern had disappeared!

So pretty on or off…I’d wear it everywhere, even grocery shopping. It’s good to feel like a miliion bucks as much as possible.

These are actually shades I’ll wear, though by now I own about 20 gold eyeshadows and another 20 khaki ones, so I’ll probably pass!

I think that Chanel has beautiful stuff, and I’ve also heard is long wearing and has great pigment, but I could just SEE the fiance’s face if I came home with an $80 eye palette even though I could afford it (he doesn’t get mad, he just doesn’t understand my fascination with pretty makeup. He claims I don’t need it. I say, I know I don’t but I like it!). Probably the reason I don’t own any Chanel stuff yet is because of the people at the makeup counters more than the price. If they are rude or act uninterested in me it’s a huge turn-off to me especially if I was considering dropping some decent money. I wish they sold Chanel in Sephora (and MAC) because I love all the salespeople and makeup artists there!

Weve had rain all week — so its surprisingly cool in this part of the world. 🙂

The palette – oh my. My heart flutters – this is totally something I would use. And abuse. All day. Everday.

Chanel always looks beautiful and classy. And I’m quite aware of the price but that didn’t stop me from almost choking on my Fiber One bar when I read $80. 🙂 I’m so glad I’m not much of a shadow person.

Btw, I’ve been reading Jenny Lawson’s book “Let’s Pretend This Never Happened”. I’m sure you know who she is, with the blogging and all. I was laughing so hard last night that I thought I might throw up. She’s irreverent and foul-mouthed and a bit crazy but most of all, amazingly funny. I highly recommend! Even the Hubs is laughing when I read parts aloud. Unsurprisingly, he identifies perfectly with Victor. 🙂

$80? Ouch… That better be one amazing palette! 🙂

I like the colors, but still, I don’t think I’d be convinced enough to buy it. You created a great look with them, though.

The only reason why I would get it is because it’s Chanel but it’s really pricey….

I think this a really good palette from Chanel. Its cheaper than $80 here but still very pricey but I picked it up back in April and am getting a lot of use out of it. I think its an excellent palette and I’m hoping Chanel keeps to these shadow textures instead of the baked crap they serve us here 😛

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
