I don’t remember much from my brief stint in community theater as Misc. Shark Girl #3 in West Side Story, but I do remember how during auditions people would whisper about the “triple threats,” and how it was, like, a big deal to be one.
Sounds thuggish, right? — a triple threat! In theater parlance, it’s what they call someone who can sing, dance and act. Of course, I was barely able to do one of the three (I could dance a little)…but I also had long black hair that from far away helped me pass for Puerto Rican. Score! 🙂
Like multi-talented stage stars, Buxom’s new Lip Tarnish Plumping & Moisturizing Lip Stains ($18) want to do it all. Blackmail (a blackberry truffle), Busted (a cherry red), Caught on Tape (a hot pink) and Wardrobe Malfunction (a candy pink) go on sale exclusively at Sephora this August, and they hope to lavish lips in not three but FOUR different ways, tinting like a lip stain, shining like a gloss, hydrating like a lip balm and plumping like…something that plumps.

I’m not sure about wear time yet, but from quick first impressions with them today, I think they’re kinda like plumping versions of Tarte LipSurgence Natural Lip Lusters ($24).
Like most plumpers, they feel tingly on my lips. In this case, it’s not painful, but I can definitely feel something goin’ on. I don’t see a difference in terms of the size of my lips in the mirror, but I rarely do with any lip plumping products.
Compared to the Lip Lusters, Lip Tarnish feels stickier and looks somewhat subdued. As for the other senses, Tarte’s peppermint flavor and scent fade quickly, while Buxom’s strong brown sugar fragrance lingers for at least an hour. Unlike Tarte’s twist-up packaging, Buxom went with a traditional pencil for these, which means you’ll need a sharpener. Thoughtfully, Buxom provides one hidden in the cap. 🙂
INGREDIENTS: BIS-BEHENYL/ISOSTEARYL/PHYTOSTERYL DIMER DILINOLEYL DIMER DILINOLEATE, ISOCETYL STEARATE, DIISOSTEARYL MALATE, POLYBUTENE, SYNTHETIC WAX, SILICA, SYNTHETIC BEESWAX, GLYCERYL CAPRYLATE, MENTHONE GLYCERIN ACETAL, FRAGRANCE (PARFUM), PENTAERYTHRITYL TETRA-DI-t-BUTYL HYDROXYCINNAMATE, ETHYLHEXYL PALMITATE, TRIBEHENIN, TOCOPHEROL, SORBITAN ISOSTEARATE, PALMITOYL OLIGOPEPTIDE, LIMONENE. (+/-): MICA, CARMINE (CI 75470), TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891), MANGANESE VIOLET (CI 77742), IRON OXIDES ( CI 77491, 77492, 77499), YELLOW 6 LAKE (CI 15985), BLUE 1 LAKE (CI 42090), RED 6 (CI 15850), RED 7 LAKE (15850), RED 21 (CI 45380), RED 28 LAKE (CI 45410).
At $18, these cost significantly less than the Lip Lusters do at $24, and they might be worth checking out this August if you don’t mind having to sharpen (not gonna lie, my lazy @ss prefers to twist!) and find you like the strong brown sugar taste and scent.
PRICE: $18
AVAILABILITY: Coming in August exclusively to Sephora stores and sephora.com

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Just brought home a pizza for din-din, and now I’m looking for something to watch. Hope you’re having a nice Friday night. 🙂
These look absolutely amazing! I have to say, though, I’m with you on the twist vs. sharpen thing – I’d much rather twist up the end, the lazy lady that I am 😛

Caught on tape is hot!
Ooooh that first pic of you with wardrobe malfunction on your lips is FIERCE! you look stunning! What did you do and use in your hair to get it so volumey and wavy?! Anyways, love these swatches! Hope you’re having a fantabulous Friday:)
Hi Samantha,
The day before I curled it with a large barrel curling iron by Revlon. I slept with it loose, and then in the morning I just gently brushed out the curls with a wide-toothed comb, scrunched the ends and then sprayed it with a flexible hairspray (Suave makes a great one!) to set.
How would you compare these to the milani lip flashes?
These are slightly thinner, have a pronounced scent/flavor and have a tingly sensation (the whole plumping thing).
i LOVE these kinds of lip products!
i think i would prefer “the twist” as well… i feel like i’m wasting product when i sharpen.

I love pencils like these! Caught on tape is gorgeous!
Haha Karen, the Sharks are Puerto Rican, not the Jets! I would know I was a Jet myself. Call me Snowboy 😉
I quite like Busted and Blackmail, but I prefer my lip stains matte, not glossy (when was the last time I saw a glossy lip stain, anyway?). I’ll still check these out when they’re launched, though!
Ooh I like Caught on Tape the most!
By the way, just wanted to say I really like the way you write, so creative & fun! 🙂
very pretty….but not in sale here in london….:'(
Loved Caught on Tape & your picture wearing this is superb 🙂

Sorry to be a stickler, but passing for Puerto Rican would have made you a Shark; not a Jet. 🙁
Hi Eileen,
LOL, I can’t believe I did that! Funny, since I’ve done the show twice — once in high school as a member of the orchestra and then in community theater Misc. SHARK Girl (oops!). I guess that’s what I get for blogging late on a Friday night on an empty stomach. I just really wanted to get this post up for you guys to see since it’s so new. Must’ve been really tired/hungry and missed this small detail. Still hope you enjoyed the post.
You have a good weekend, okay?
Love the pink one!

Quick (probably stupid) question: once you wear down the tip, is it even possible to advance it? I’ve bought lip crayons like that before, but once the tip is worn down, it’s worthless. Am I missing something? Obviously you can’t sharpen them because of the plastic coating, but is there some way to advance the makeup so you can use it more than once? Again, I know this is probably a stupid question lol.
Hi Jb555,
Hmm, are you talking about the Tarte version or this one? Buxom’s is a traditional pencil, so there’s no plastic coating. You just sharpen it like a regular pencil.
these look cute, the colors are fab!
Wardrobe Malfunction looks great on you!

Ooh, pretty! But I agree – I hate sharpening! Haha. And why do people feel the need to make scented lip products? 🙁

any idea on the wear time of these? I love lipstains because they don’t end up on the rims of glasses/straws and I don’t have to touch up after a meal… but the Tarte ones fade really fast on me. Hope these last longer!
The one thing I would grab n case of emergency? Clinique fireberry lipgloss….
Caught on Tape, hot.
you look soooo good in wardrobe malfunction. 🙂
How does it compare to the Stila glaze pencils?
OOOh…thank you for these. I have to have them….now….grrrrr…. So, how did you get access to them early??? i’d love to be on a panel to try new items. So…I also much prefer the twist than the sharpen, I feel by sharpening we waste the product. sigh. Thanks!!
