The Bobbi Brown Black Ruby Sparkle Eyeshadow Palette Takes It Easy on Eyes and Glitter

October 10th, 2011 by Karen 44 Comments

bobbi brown black ruby sparkle

Do you remember the last time you wore glitter? Hey now, your answer better not be, “I don’t do glitter.” And did I just see you roll your eyes? 🙂

Even if you’ve never been a glitter girl before, or if you have but just haven’t had the time lately to rock it often and well, Bobbi Brown’s new Black Ruby Sparkle Eye Palette ($45) contends that it doesn’t have to take a lot of time (or shimmer) to sparkle.

The limited edition eyeshadow palette hails from Bobbi’s new holiday collection and comes with glittery powder eyeshadows in shades of pink, silver, ruby and onyx.

Don’t worry too much about going overboard with this particular breed of glitter. Bobbi generally takes a restrained approach to makeup, one that won’t leave you looking like a dancer in a Vegas revue (although, I must say, despite wearing pounds of makeup, those ladies usually look smokin’ hot). You get just enough color and sparkle for brighter eyes with a subtle glow.

You can totally handle it (I will not let you neglect your glam!). This palette embraces the notion that eye makeup doesn’t have to be hard.

To that end, I suggest starting with a primer, and then using the little brush that comes with the kit to buff one of the palette’s shadows onto your lids. Then, mellow out the edges with a finger, curl your lashes, and finish with two coats of mascara. Tada! Easy, breezy glam. And if you have a bit time to spare after that, line with your favorite brown or black liner.

BONUS: These exhibit hardly any glittery fallout, which means not having to spend time cleaning up stray bits o’ sparkle.

PRICE: $45
AVAILABILITY: Available now at Bobbi Brown counters and also online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A (it would be even better for $35 instead)

So, I know that I’m totally late to the party, but I finally got around to listening to Lady Gaga’s latest album, Born This Way, and HELLO! — I love it. I dig the upbeat dance tracks, empowering lyrics and the little nods she makes to different genres (like country and ’80s pop).

Highly recommended for a workout playlist, too (I swear it makes me run faster).

Here’s a version of my favorite song from the CD, You and I, that she performed live on The View… Damn, right?

LOL! I wore that same black and white houndstooth jacket in high school…

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

LOL, Belladatura — I’m guilty of doing the same thing when I Christmas shop. One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me. 🙂

That’s cool that you have a sis. Is she older or younger?

The colors are so lovely, but $45 is kinda…high. I agree that $35 would be more reasonable.

I love all the colors in this quad, but the taupey shade is my favorite. $45 is not cheap, but it’s about $11 for each eyeshadow, so it’s not too bad.

I love this palette! I’ve been really bummed that the Make Up For Ever Smoky Eye Palette but maybe this can be my replacement! 🙂 I’ve been getting into smoky eyes lately!

And OMG Karen!! I’ve been listening to You and I nonstop recently!! 😀 I love it so much! Although, the radio edit is a little weird. They replace Nebraska with California and, as a California girl myself, it’s not bad but the edits are a bit strange/awkwardly done. Anyways, I need to listen to the rest of the album as well. I need more workout music 🙂

      Hi Christina,

Smokey eyes are so great for fall (and for holiday parties too). What are your fave smokey eye colors these days?

I’ve never heard the California version on this song… I love the original though and think I’d prefer that to anything else. I mean, who else but Gaga can say, “Nebraska, Nebraska I LOVE YOU!!!” and get away with it?

The plummy purple shade has always been a favorite of mine ever since I found out it complemented my dark brown eyes. But I’m trying to experiment with dark greens now! I’m thinking of picking up MAC Humid sometime.

And I agree! I totally prefer the original version to the radio edit. In fact, when I first heard the radio edit while driving I had a little double take because I wasn’t sure if I misheard the lyrics or not. 😛

Eh, that’s not ESPECIALLY glittery. My sister seriously bought me a full-on glitter palette for Christmas last year. It’s got every color you could want from black to holo. They’re not suspended in goo, either. She got it from Hot Topic, of all places, and I was prepared to pretend to like it, but it’s spectacular. I have to use a sticky, sticky base with it…and it’s definitely a “sometimes” look when I break it out, but I can look very rockstar with it.

I last used it a couple of months ago. I probably won’t get a chance to use it again until Halloween, where I will definitely use the holiday as an excuse to wear it to work! 😉

Hi Karen! I love these colors on you– and I’m in serious lust for this palette. However, I bought the BB Sparkle Glamour Quad last holiday season and was hugely disappointed in it. There was little to no pigmentation (even when worn wet) and the fallout was dreadful. After I wore it to Sunday dinner one night, it looked like I had been shot out of a glitter cannon at the stripper circus. Not flattering at all. Do you think this palette is better than last year’s?

This really caught my eye–I am such a glitter-o-holic. I swear I am the only person I know of that thrives on Sidecar from the Urban Decay Naked palette. My sis-in-law raves about Bobbie Brown and this is pretty darn tempting, except the price tag. I am just learning to delve into higher end products and often “gulp” before purchasing. I am generally WAY more satisfied with the product and find more of “what I am looking for” in these purchases. These are ideal colors for me. Normally I would try find a knock off for them versus spending $45. Which brings up a point–have you ever spent a ton on trying to find a dupe and would have been better off getting the original???

      Hi Lisa,

Hmm, that’s a good question. I don’t think I have… I just might though, for Chanel Jade nail polish. 🙂

Your sis-in-law has great taste! Bobbi has a lot of great things. Pricey, sure, but most of the products deliver the goods. Her shadows have really great staying power, which is a huge plus for me.

That polish really is pretty, especially on your skin tone. It seems as if a new polish company pops up every 5 seconds; someone is BOUND to have a dupe for you. I often don’t splurge on expensive polish, as our dress code prohibits polish (booooo)…I did buy an Essie polish and instantly fell in love with the formula but feel horribly guilty applying it only to remove it so soon. I purchased a nude color in hopes of wearing it to work on occassion without feeling guilty of a major dress code violation. Can you see the flashing light above my head that I am sure beacons my misbehavior? I am jealous of not being able to try the uber opulence of a Chanel polish as I can’t rationalize the price to wear ratio for myself…..
