Should You Nix These New Glitter Pencils from NYX?

August 11th, 2010 by Karen 40 Comments

nyx glitter pencil swatches review
NYX Eye/Eyebrow Glitter Pencils from left: Aqua Glitter, Lavender Glitter, Sliver Glitter, Gold Glitter

The glittery tips that top each of NYX’s nine new Eye/Eyebrow Pencils are thrilling me almost as much as their price ($3.50 each).

This week, after swatching four of the new colors, all of them additions to the company’s stable of permanent products, I did a little shimmy (insert boogie down dance *here*).

POW! These colors look amazing.

The pencil tips also feel fantastic. Because they’re firm, they maintain a fine point longer than I expected them to, but all their glitter comes at a price…

Grit. 🙁

All four of the shades I’ve been using tug and scratch at my lids, with color that applies unevenly, and I’ve had to use between four and six layers to lay down solid lines.

It’s gotta be the glitter… While the pencils appear saturated with the stuff, very little actually ends up on my lids or lash line, and the glitter that does get deposited looks clumpy and uneven.

They could probably also use a little help in the wear time department… The Gold and Silver shades begin to fade within about five minutes of application on bare, oily lids; an hour later they’re all but gone (where does the color go, I wonder?).

The Aqua and Lavender shades do last substantially longer, especially when I prep my eyes with Urban Decay Eden Primer. That combo delivers about four hours of wear, but even then the glitter still migrates into the crease (boo!).

All told, I’m not crazy about the way these pencils look on my eyes, but I adore them on the back of my hand, ha! Because they are so inexpensive, however, they may still be worth a try. Since my issues are with the way they apply (and not with the colors themselves, which I love), they may end up working better for you than me. If they do, you’re golden. 🙂 Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: C

Ya know, I haven’t tried those yet. Can anybody else weigh in on the non-glittery slim pencils?

Those slim pencils have equally bad staying power. They start to fade within an hour & are gone by 3 hours of wear. This is of course without a primer, on bare lids.

But then i know of plenty of pencils that stay on for long w/o primers.

I’ve been waiting for your review on these because I just love the colors. But, if they are hard to go on i’d rather invest more in something softer.

Is the glitter a non-negotiable for you? Milani makes some shimmery pencils that don’t have the big chunks of glitter, but have the same sort of metallic vibe. They go on soft and last a long time, too. Here’s a look I did with them from a while back:

Yaaayyy! I was just thinking – Milani has the answer to this! They DO have a glittery counterpart to these NYX liners, and they are fantastic.

        http://www.milanicosmetics.com/p-71-mechanical-glitter-eye-liner.aspx

They go on super smooth, the glitter is intense, and the color/glitter lasts forever – seriously all day or more PLUS no sharpening!. I have no trouble admitting I am the world’s biggest dufus when it comes to applying eyeliner, but even I can make these look gorgeous. Now the shades may not be quite as exciting as the NYX ones, but the quality and wear makes up for it, IMO.

Is it my eyes or can you see the liner migrated above your crease in the photo? Even at $3.50 I don’t see this as a worthwhile investment. Pretty colors though!

Yes, the color does migrate into the crease, and that’s with a good primer beneath!

This was a good concept but the glitter has to go. I hate when I can feel the glitter in products, they should have made them frosty or with shimmer.

I don’t mind glitter if it’s 1.) refined and not too chunky and 2.) actually stays on. Sometimes it can add a fun punch to a look!

Oh… they totally remind me of the MAC Softsparkle Eyepencils, which is not a good thing. I never really like the MAC ones, so I don’t think I’m going to try the NYX ones.

Why do they market it as Eye/Eyebrow Pencils? I don’t know about others, but I certainly don’t want glittery eyebrow on a daily basis. On a lighter note, the colours are gorgeous though. I wonder if it shows up that well.

    Thanks Karen!

I have tried a few of the Slim Eye Pencils and haven’t had any major issues.
They work good for me, I often don’t use them with primer and they have fairly decent staying power but I’d get a primer for the oilier lids and if you need it to last longer then 3-ish hours.
The color selection is so good and if you can figure out how to make them work for yourself, you will not be disappointed.
I have green eyes so its hard to find colors that look good but they have reds, browns, pinks, purples etc etc so you can have a bunch that look great.
I hate that most companies only have purples and browns for green eyes because red looks amazing!
