Lock Down Your Eye Makeup with Too Faced Lockdown

April 20th, 2009 by Karen 25 Comments

Guess who needs some makeup first aid? Yup, the weather here in Nor Cal is hot again, and EVERYTHING’s blooming. Not only have my eyes been a watery mess thanks to all the allergens in the air (ah-CHOO!), but I’m also sweating like a medieval beast.

My eye makeup hasn’t stood a chance for days. I’ve either been crying from allergies or melting from the heat.

Alas, must I sacrifice everything to the warm weather gods?

To survive the past few steamy, pollen-fueled days, I’ve graced my lids with Lockdown, a new line of cream shadows by Too Faced ($18.50).

The simple wash of shadow adds a little punch without going for the knockout. I think it’s a fab look for lazy days or hot days when the thought of heavy makeup is the last thing on my mind.

To create the Lockdown line, Too Faced injected their famous long-wearing eye makeup primer, Shadow Insurance (LOVE!), with colorful shimmer.

What’s the result? How ’bout six long-lasting shades that pack plenty of shimmer and pigment to spare.

  • Prisoner of Love: A soft, shimmery pink
  • Bedroom Eyes: A shimmery taupe
  • Bondage: A shimmery champagne
  • Dramarama: A shimmery milk chocolate
  • I’m Guilty: A shimmery teal
  • Jail Bait: A cool and shimmery pink

So far I’ve tried Jail Bait, Dramarama and I’m Guilty…

Isn’t that shimmer crazy good?

Once the stuff’s on my lids, it doesn’t move for nothing.

I use my fingers to apply it, patting a shade onto my eyelid. It delivers a sheer, shimmery wash of color.

I’ve mostly worn it by itself, but I bet it’d work well layered beneath powder shadows, too.

Lockdown would rate a perfect grade in my book if it weren’t for one thing: more than one layer starts looking streaky and uneven.

When I’m in the mood for layers, I’ll probably reach for something like the MAC Paint Pots or Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadows instead.

Its inability to layer well limits Lockdown’s flexibility, but it’s still a winner in my book.

The colors I’ve tried have been easy to apply, and I like its resilience in the face of obnoxious bodily fluid issues. That, and the lightweight tube travels well. I think it bring it with me on my next trip out of town.

Too Faced Lockdown

Price: $18.50
Use: As a shimmery cream shadow or a base for powder shadows
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

You might like Too Faced Lockdown if…

  1. … you wear single washes of color over the entire eye,
  2. … you’re looking for a cream shadow able to double as a base,
  3. … you like lightweight packaging built for travel,
  4. … you’re already a fan of Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer.

Is it Friday yet?

What started out a good day has devolved into an allergy-fueled sneeze-fest, and I feel miserable! I’m breathing in fits and starts, alternating coughing and sneezing — LOVELY!

Blast you, spring weather! BLAST YOU!

I’m turning into a grumpy goat…

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

That’s a brilliant idea from Too Faced. You were the one who introduced me to Shadow Insurance and I have never looked back since. I can’t live (well, ok, wear eye makeup) without it. I think I’d like to try these someday but at the moment I’m curious to try out the MAC paint pots and BeneFit’s creaseless cream shadows before these, since I already know how much I like the Too Faced product.

    Good review, Karen, thanks. 😀

I just tried these a couple of weeks ago at Ulta and I was totally impressed! I absolutely LOVE Bedroom Eyes…it is gorgeous! And you’re totally right…they don’t move once they’re on! Awesome.

Hope you feel better! I’m suffering right along with you today due to similar weather here in Pasadena!

      Hi Shefali,

I hope your allergies are better today. So far mine are under control… we’ll see how long that lasts.

Do you think you might pick up any lockdown? I’m thinking I need Bedroom Eyes now!

Those look pretty cool, I might have to try ’em out! I do tend to wear a lot of single washes of color when the weather heats up (um can you say 95 in the East Bay today?) so these look perfect for summer!

      Hi Vampy Varnish,

Girl, it was hotter than Hades up in Marin county yesterday, too. I had to bust all the fans out. 🙂 Today is supposed to be a hot one, too. Enjoy the sunshine!

They sound interesting, but right now I’m happy with my Pure White Chromaline from MAC. (I just bought it–I should get some use out of it. :D)

“I’m Guilty” looks gorgeous! My fav. color is cerulean so any kind of aqua-ish (new word!) blue blows my mind. Thanks for sharing, Karen!

“Obnoxious bodily fluids” – LOL you kill me! My allergies are crazy too, that is why despite the nice weather I HATE the spring. I get congested, itchy eyes and often hives – on my FACE. What a drag. Anyways I did read some other reviews that siad those shadows were streaky – they suggested doing one thick layer instead of several thin ones.

I just bought Too Faced primer on your recommendation/reviews of other brands, the other day! I’ve worn it twice now. The verdict is still out. We’ll see this weekend after some warm weather and a night of dancing at a Ball if it passes the test!
