Lippmann’s Dynamic Duo: New Nail Colors for Summer

May 5th, 2009 by Karen 25 Comments

OMG! This rain is drivin’ Tabs cat-batty. We’re getting May showers out here in the Bay Area, and whenever it rains Tabs goes full-on CRAZY.

At four in the morning he leapt up on the bed like a cat possessed, climbing all over my bladder like it was Mount Everest. Then, pleased with himself for almost giving me a heart attack, he shifted into lovies mode, purring with his face in the crook of my neck.

He’s always this way when it rains.

So, what’s a beauty addict to do when she’s startled awake by her cat a couple hours before dawn? Why, drink a pot of coffee (WHEEE!) and paint her nails, of course. 🙂

Say hello to both of the colors from Lippmann’s iddy biddy collection for Summer 2009 ($15 each).

It’s Raining Men is my favorite of the two. It’s a creamy tomato red — a classic color that conjures thoughts of 1940s bombshell babes in red lipstick, fishnets, rolled hair, peep-toe shoes and immaculate red nails.

I’ve searched high and low for a timeless, elegant red like It’s Raining Men. I’m so glad it’s here! Can’t wait to try it with a pearl bracelet or some gold bangles.

Texture-wise, It’s Raining Men applies evenly (nary a streak), and I love the shine when it dries. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

Call Me Irresponsible, color No. 2, is a creamy royal purple with a touch of blue. Think vintage mid-’80s Prince. Looking at it on my toes I heard Raspberry Beret (“the kind you buy from a second hand store!”) playing somewhere off in the distance. How Wendy and Lisa! 🙂

It applies with lots of pigmentation and shine, but it’s a touch streaky, even on a base coat.

Still, I dig the shade. It has a spot on my dresser, ready to go for my toes this summer. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+

Well, that pot of pre-dawn coffee wore off hours ago, and now I’m running on empty…

I did make it to the salon, however, to take care of the gray hair sitch that’s been stressing me out.

How are you doing today? What have you been up to?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Those are so pretty! I feel you on the pet thing, my pooch comes in and bugs me in the morning too – even though I’m not the one who feeds and walks him. The other day my dad was looking for him, I was fast asleep, he was sitting next to my bed and I was holding his tail. Hahaha.

I didn’t comment on the other hair post because there was 7 million comments on it, but you hair looked freakin’ amazing! It looked like something out of a shampoo commercial! Hope your gray hair sitch doesn’t get you down 🙂

      Hi Shiny,

Aww, that’s so cute! I wish Tabs would let me hold onto his tail (he can’t stand to have his tail and butt touched, ha ha ha!).

Oh, and thanks about the hair — the gray situation is now under control, yay!

Hope you had a nice Wednesday. 🙂

      Hi Stef,

I know! Still, it’s not as streaky as other purples I’ve worn in the past. Plus, I love the shine!

LOL, I feel your pain! Sama (our “girl next door” brown tabby) thinks that the most comfy thing in the world to lie on is the human bladder!

Those are a couple of lovely shades, I’ve gotta check out It’s Raining Men!

      Hi Glosslizard,

What is it with Tabby cats and bladders?! I think they’re genetically programed to seek it out 🙂

Oh, you think Tabs is bad with rain, try Zena. Zena literally LAYS all 33.5 pounds of muscle onto your stomach, knees or feet (the feet and knees are the worst, I tell ye) whining for attention. She will stick next to you like Krazy Glue and make sure you cannot miss her. Wherever you go, she goes. It can really unnerve you too.

Thunderstorms are even worse. She whimpers and whines like the apocalypse has come while PACING back and forth across the living room floor. She will not allow you to come her down. She occasionally shivers. Then, just when you think you’re about ready to kill her after an hour or two, she goes into her suite (aka kennel but it has a blanket, a bed, a pillow and her long toy fox), plops onto the doggy bed with Mr. Fox curled against her back, puts her head on the pillow and goes to sleep. It’s like the thought never occurred to her until she had driven absolutely EVERYONE insane.

Have I told you that the members of my family all get a bit paranoid when other people (or animals) pace in front of us? It’s the one thing that guarantees us screaming at you to sit down. It’s very unnerving unless you’re the one pacing.

I just painted my fingernails in “Watermelon” by Essie. My toenails are still painted Back to Fuchsia from Sally Hansen. Too lazy to take it off my toes and put Watermelon on my toes. The bunnies were out to get me today on my walk with Zena. There were not one, not two but five big FAT bunnies in Zena’s path today. My arm was just about ripped out of its socket. Thank goodness I decided against walking Ally today. I had enough trouble with the one dog.

The colors are pretty, but I refuse to spend more than $9.00 (excluding tax) on a bottle of nail polish. OPI and Essie are guilty pleasures as I get to buy them very few and far between. If only my OPI’s were cheaper!!!! :sniffs:

      Hi Kate & Zena,

What is it with our pets and rain? I think Tabs and Zena are cut from the same crazy cloth. 🙂

That red is gorgeous. I just painted my nails a really bright red, but it’s more blue-based than It’s Raining Men.

They both look gorgeous! Karen, do you think the red would look good on paler-than-pale cool toned skin, or would it be too warm for me? Thanks.

      Hi Faye,

Yup, you could pull it off. It’s not *so* warm that it would look off. The color is going to look really dramatic against your skin! Love that!

Call Me Irresponsible is a great colour, but it looks a bit sheer. Raining Men is a classic.

They both look good, but not to be a cheapo or anything but i wouldnt spend 15 well earned bucks on nailpolish.. and to top it off, Call Me Irresponsible is too sheer/streaky. Ill stick to the OPI, ORLY and Barielles 🙂

      Hi Sarah,

I like those brands, too. I do have to say Lippmann colors last a really long time, and they don’t really chip on me, so that often makes the price worth it.

      Hi Catherine,

I agree. It’s hard to find reds that are dead on (they always seem to be too orange or too blue). This one is just right!

“I think Tabs and Zena are cut from the same crazy cloth” :giggle:

Actually, I think Zena doesn’t like the rain for three main reasons:

    1. She likes to be outside when it’s warm. It’s 65 degrees and raining so she’s not amused.

    2. She HATES getting wet, particularly her paws. She’s like a cat in the way that she likes to stay dry. It’s rather funny to see her lick her paws clean. I’ve finally got her to stay calm whilst getting a bath but she still runs around everywhere when I try to dry her.

    3. The sound of rain hitting the house and pavement freaks her out. Zena’s breed is bred with wide, funnel-like upright ears so they can hear their prey. She’s meant to hear everything from mice to pumas so her hearing is spectacular. We humans aren’t fazed by the sounds of rain, but I’m sure to Zena they sound like a Blitzkrieg style attack. Her hearing is phenomenal as Rat Terriers were actually given the name by Theodore Roosevelt as his Rat Terrier ‘Skip’ sniffed out and killed the thousands of rats in the White House in less than a day during a rat infestation. I pity the poor employees that had to pick up after T.R’s Rat Killing Spree.

Tabs seems the same way. Cats have good hearing as well to hunt them little mice.

    Hey Karen,
I’ve been looking for a classic red for the longest time too! You’re right – they do remind me of 1940’s bombshells all glamorous and done-up. These two colours are beautiful, thanks for the swatch 🙂

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
