A Week with MAC Studio Moisture Tint SPF 15

August 3rd, 2009 by Karen 14 Comments

Homegirls, here’s a quick followup on the tube o’ MAC Studio Moisture Tint SPF 15 ($30) I picked up from the Baby Bloom collection a couple weeks ago.

I’ve been wearing Medium Dark (a caramel beige) for about a week now. It’s one of the five shades in the new line of super sheer tinted moisturizers.

How does it stack up against my tried-and-true Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer?

Breaking up/out

I’ve had some rotten luck with MAC foundations in the past, and just like the others I’ve tried, Studio Moisture Tint didn’t get along with my skin. After wearing it for a week with MAC Blot Pressed Powder (which *never* gives me zits), I developed a smattering of little pimples all over my face.

On the bright side, they weren’t the volcanic-sized ones that hurt and take forever to go away, but still.

Sheer defeat

Ultimately, the coverage didn’t work for me either. I think it’s just too sheer — not that I can’t build up layers to increase the coverage, but it’s time consuming.

I usually think to wear tinted moisturizer on days when I don’t want to spend a lot of time on my makeup, so having to spend extra time layering kinda defeats the whole saving time thing.

MAC Studio Moisture Tint SPF 15

Price: $30
Use: An ultra-sheer tinted moisturizer with sunscreen
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: C+

MAC Studio Moisture Tint wasn’t my fave, but it still could be one of yours. If your skin gets along with MAC’s other foundations (and you’re looking for light coverage), you might want to give it a try.

Just another manic Monday…

Did ya have a good one? I feel like I opened my eyes this morning and then BAM! — Monday night.

I hope I can make it to dance class. Right now the studio’s only a few minutes from our apartment, but it’ll be a lot farther away if we end up moving later this month.

What’s on your agenda tonight? Doing anything sweaty?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

    Hi Karen.

I was tempted to try this product when it came out, but then I caught a flashback of the nasty marks resembling chocolate chips that the studio fix powder left on me and I went running for the hills. I have good skin, dry, but good and I don’t get pimples often at all but I had a new one every darn day with the mac foundations I tried. I also tried studio sculpt. I don’t know what mac is doing with their foundations. I have my makeup forever face and body as a tinted moisturizers, so I need not look anymore.

Tonight I’m watching The Closer and Weeds, 2 of my faves. Nothing sweaty tonight because I’m a couch potato. Lol

Boo, this makes me sad! I had such high hopes. I’ll probably still give it a try, with pimple cream handy…

What’s your take on the Suntint lip balms? I thought the gold looked pretty.

My sweaty night consists of a turkey burger, a glass of wine and a Six Feet Under rerun!

    Oh Karen,
I can’t use any moisturizers b/c i get tiny whiteheads EVERYWHERE!
    It’s horrible!!!!
I hate the feeling of my face when it isn’t moisturized.
I’m still searching of course… and I’ve learned to ask for samples of products instead of buying and hoping it matches my skin.

I wish I was doing something sweaty tonight ;P but my dear boo is leaving for Michigan tomorrow..

Shame to hear about the MAC SMT. I was pretty curious about them as well. Cute packaging though. Did you find it moisturizing at least?

Hm, today couldn’t have gone slower. My headache, thankfully, went away by 5 pm here. Zena napped with me practically all day. It’s now 11:49 PM and guess who’s wide awake from all the sleeping?

Today, I decided to weigh myself and found I lost three pounds. Not eating for two days due to massive migraine does that to me. I now need to gain those 3 pounds back! I lose my appetite completely when I’m not feeling well.

I’m sorry you broke out to the MAC sheer foundation. I hate it when that happens and also has Mr. Rash for an escort. I hope your dance class goes well!

Thanks for sharing this! Very very helpful.
I think I’m gonna stay away from it since my skin is supersensitive. yikes!

I haven’t had much luck with MAC foundations, they all (NC and NW) seem too yellow-based for me!

The only time I tried on a MAC foundation was during a makeover, the artist applied Studio Fix I think. I thought it looked too cakey so I didn’t go near MAC foundations again. I was really looking forward to this since I don’t like heavy coverage, but shikes, I don’t need more pimples! I prefer sticking to my regular foundation and mixing it with a bit of moisturizer for a “homemade” version. Thanks for the review Karen! I hope everything clears up OK 😀

I must say that I have NEVER met a MAC foundation that doesn’t break me out. Their foundations are promising I swear there’s an ingredient in everyone of them that’s probably call ZITanium dioxide!

haha, I think its just each person that has a different reaction. I know tons like you who can’t wear MAC foundations, and then tons more, including myself, that can! I got a sample of this to try out before I commit, so let’s see how that goes.

I did also pick up one of the suntints and oddly enough, I had a bad reaction to that. There is no color and there felt heavy and my lips were super uncomfortable. It’s odd because I have never had that reaction with MAC’s other lip products.

I’m also disappointed with the Moisture Tint SPF 15. It dried out my skin and also didn’t give me the coverage i wanted – way too sheer. then again it is just a tinted moisturizer. thankfully it didn’t make me break out but it left patches of color on my face and looked just awful. I agree with the rating, i wish i didn’t waste my time on this product

    Ugg.
I am not a fan of MAC foundations (they just don’t do it for me), and am sorely disappointed that these suck too!
Luckily I found the physicians formula tinted moisturizer @ CVS.
    ITS AMAZING.
All I want in a TM (plus it makes my skin flawless) for like..$11.
    Screw MAC.

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
