Bobbi Brown Springs Into Action with a New Tinted Eye Brightener

January 11th, 2010 by Karen 41 Comments

Bobbi Brown, Queen of Neutrals, wants to help us look a little less tired with her new spring collection. Called Makeup Face Lift (Hey, BB! My sleep-deprived self is totally down for that!), the eight-piece collection’s mix of new and re-promoted products from the permanent line are supposed to be able to help create a fresh face in five minutes or less.

First, what do you think of the Tinted Eye Brightener ($38, comes in eight shades)? It’s basically Bobbi’s famous potted Tinted Eye Brightener repackaged as a convenient click pen.

I’d heard about it before but hadn’t given it a try until today. Now I see why so many women like it! 🙂

Talk about creeeeamy. Like hot butter — hot butter that doesn’t settle into little lines and creases, so it’s like *magic* hot butter if you’re 30-something (like me).

Wearing Tinted Eye Brightener in Light-to-Medium Peach

Coverage-wise, it’s pretty sheer, but can build up to semi-opaque. For minor-to-moderate under-eye discoloration (not severe darkening like after I’ve pulled an all-nighter with Bejeweled 2 on my iPhone), Tinted Eye Brightener should work like a dream.

When my dark circles are really bad, I’ll use it more as a color corrector, layering it beneath something with better coverage like The Balm’s Time Balm Concealer ($18).

As for the price, Tinted Eye Brightener will set you back a hefty $38, and the .05-oz pen does seem kinda small for what you get.

LOVE how flexible it is, but I’d be feeling it more at $15.

If you’ve been out prowling for a light-to-medium coverage concealer that doesn’t accentuate those pesky fine lines (trust me, concealers that do this are hard to find), you might want to give it a go. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B

I do love Bobbi’s stuff, but some of it seems stupid expensive for what you get. I mean, come on! Anyways, I am waiting until that final free moment where I can sneak out and grab myself some goodies, including that pretty eyeshadow quad from Chanel and that Bobbi Pen, and those pretty new Lillyland Bronzer/blush flower powder. Yum! Wouldn’t it be awesome if Nordstrom/sephora had a program where every morning you could go to their store and use all the new products? Not take them home, but try ANYTHING You like?!? Endless supply of beauty…..heaven!!!!

Yes, I’d love a program like that… wouldn’t it be extra awesome if after all the beauty playtime they fed you snacks? LOL!

I don’t know Karen, I’d pay $38 for even a one-time use of Magic Hot Butter! Sounds sexy.

You look rather fresh, I’m thinking I may need to get some of this. And you are SO right, us 30 somethings have a hard time with undereye coverage.

True, true. Ugh, the search for concealer definitely got harder in my 30s. If it wasn’t settling into fine lines it was disappearing, or looking all cakey and sketchy…

Is this comparable to Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat – which is a cult classic?

      Hi Jen,

If yours are really dark this might work better as a color corrector layered beneath a more heavy duty concealer. Have you tried The Balm’s Time Balm? It’s so great!

It was fun. Originally we were going to go to Cha Cha Cha which is my fave and hers but she changed her mind and wanted to go to E & O Trading in Larkspur. The food there is really yummy. Then we just hung out at my place watching movies & showing my sister pics from our trip. Very mellow but that is what she wanted 🙂

I have gone to the Melting Pot. The one in Larkspur is really cool because it’s really dark in there. It’s like you are in a cave. Definitely recommend going on a special occasion… or a Tuesday 🙂

Just so you know, a lot of people compare this to Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat, and while the Touche Eclat may seem just a bit more expensive, you actually get twice the amount of product for that little extra!

I have to say the convenience of a click pen applicator would be really nice on the go. A few sweeps around 3pm when my makeup isn’t holding up as well as I’d like! But the price tag just doesn’t do it for me! Esp if it only has light to medium coverage… My circles need way more fire power than that!

Clinique makes a concealer/brightener in a click pen and I’ve been using it for years! It’s called Airbrush Concealer (I think) and comes in 3 shades and it’s only $19.50! (Also .05oz) It’s great for brightening up the under eye area but if I’m having a super duper dark circle kinda day I layer it underneath a heavier concealer too (I like Clinique’s All About Eyes concealer or Prescriptives Camoflauge concealer).

You’re right – the older we get the harder it is to find a good concealer! What’s up with that?

I actually use something pretty similar from Clinique, its called the Airbrush Concealer, its also sheer and it illuminates and “perfects” as the website puts it. Better yet, its only $19 compared to this Bobbi Brown.

I hear ya, I have dark circles too, but sometimes I like embracing my dark circles, and just touching them up a bit, and this works perfect for that as well. It lightens up the area, and I can build up the coverage if I want to 🙂

I LOVE Bobbi Brown! This one really does liven up the eyes. But I’m thinking of going for the Time Balm concealer like you said. Is that cream-based? I actually have no idea what the pros and cons are for using cream, liquid, powder, or stick concealers :/

I’d really love to give this a try.. I think we have the same skin color and this looks beautiful on you! However, the hefty price is a turn-off . Gosh, 0.05 oz is about 1.5 mL which is equivalent to a little over 22 drops. But it looks so good on you, especially around the inner corners! I’m going to shimmy my butt over to nordies this weekend and go have a look. Hopefully I don’t fall in love with it.. I just might end up bringing it home!

So Karen I was already thinking I needed to e-mail you. You see I was a devoted fan of Prescriptives Site Unseen brightening undereye concealer. I was sad to hear the brand was going, but the concealer was the only product I used. I am by no means out yet, but I feel I need to start looking for the next one. The issue is that I typically don’t wear foundation on most days – I wear Stila’s illuminating tinted moisturizer. The Site Unseen was good because it provided coverage, without being heavy so that I could just wear the moisturizer and it blended well – plus it was super easy to apply. So do you think this would be a replacement? I tired BB concealers before and found them heavy – too heavy to wear with just tinted moisturizer. And I’m with you on the $38 price tag – that’s high for just concealer. I would love any recommendations you might have.

Hey Megan, I think this could work for you. In the pics above I’m wearing two layers. If you do one you could have light coverage that should work with tinted moisturizer.

You might also want to check out Givency’s Mister Light. It has similar light coverage, with a lil’ bit more pearl though. And, it’s cheaper:

I agree Karen, the price is too hefty. Sometimes I think eye brighteners draw MORE attn to the bags under my eyes–I just want them to blend in–not stick out!

Hey Karen! I’m in my teens – 16, and i just want something to cover those eye-bags & dark-eye circles of mine. Something sheer – as given my age – as they aren’t THAT prominent or severe. And also relatively affordable/cheap but good? Do you have anything in mind for me? Thank you!

Hi Michelle! Try MAC Select Cover-Up. It should give you the light coverage, comes in a wide range of colors and is relatively affordable at $17. You don’t need to use a lot, so the tube should last you for a long time!
