Makeup and Beauty Blog: Where You At??

April 12th, 2008 by Karen 30 Comments

truancy (noun, plural): the state of being idle

It’s hella hot out here in the Bay Area today, so I made the executive decision to play hooky and blog from Ocean Beach in San Francisco.

Well… to be honest, I didn’t actually do any “blogging” at the beach, but I thought about it. 🙂

My truancy today also involved cruising around in the 4Runner with the sunroof open and all the windows down while bumping Ray J.’s Sexy Can I.

You’re a dirty birdy, Ray J.

But you know your girl — I couldn’t stay away from the Internets and had to sneak in a Makeup and Beauty Blog-related something, tom foolery or not.

My nails were thrashed after the beach, so I did a quickie manicure at home. Because it was so frickin’ hot this afternoon — like Christian Bale hot — I chose a cool, icy shade, going with Laura Mercier’s Nail Lacquer in Sterling ($15).

laura mercier gold digger sterling nail lacquer

Other than the beach and a manicure, I did a whole lotta nothing today and ’twas glorious! Of course, now the pangs of guilt are making themselves heard. Back! Back, evil guilt!

How was your Saturday, homie? Did you have chores to do, or were you able to catch up on some quality slacker time?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Slacker time, sadly. I have a Chemistry exam on Tuesday that I SHOULD be studying for. Today was a beautiful day and I could not say no to going out. Bay Area weather is so weird, you never really know when th e next warm and sunny day will be 🙂

    Hi Joanna,

That’s so true, especially in San Francisco. It was actually *warm* in the Sunset district, which is rare. What did you end up doing?

BTW, I remember the feeling of not wanting to study for Chem on a sunny day… 🙂

Hey Karen, beautiful manicolor! I bought a similar shade two days ago, now I cant wait to try it out 🙂 🙂
I also realised what kind of expertise you put into ur photographs, cos I’ve been wasting the last hour and half trying to take some swatch pics, but its tough to get focus, color clarity and contrast exactly the way I want. Please give me a few tips on how to take such perfect pics… Pleeeeeeze!!

Hi Karen, I love the colour, suits your nails so well. Again, the neat application stand out – how do you do that? I completely slacked at home, baked a cake, cleaned my closets, viewed all my fav blogs, so all in all, an ideal weekend!

Wow, I’m still sort of shaken by the fact that it was hot at Ocean Beach! 😉 Glad you got to be truant for a while, and the mails do look hot!

I had such a great Saturday! Hubby took me out shopping at Union Square for my birthday (which is next week, but next weekend is pretty packed)! We went to Saks where I found one of the national Chanel make-up artists, tried on a deep fuchsia/raspberry lipstick called Splendeur (which after wearing all day I LOVE and will go back for) and snagged an Astral glossimer! Also got a tube of Prevage (for the gettin’ old part) and some Even Better to snag the luxe Clinique GWP! Afterwards, we headed back to the elly-bay of the East Bay and he treated me to sushi for lunch! ‘Twas entirely awesome!

Of course this means that I’ll have to catch up on all the weekend chores today, but I can live with that! Hope your Sunday is great!

    Thanks Amita,

A big part of it is the camera I use; I shoot with a Canon Rebel XTI and use a special imaged-stabilized lens (not the one that came stock with the camera). Lighting also helps; I’m lucky in that my office has a lot of windows and light streams in throughout the day. Oh, I also take a sh*tload of pictures, too. Seriously. I just keep snapping away and know that I’ll have to go through a ton of “throwaway” photos to find the right one.

    Hi Eru,

Oh! I love the cinema… and I dig scary movies! Which one did you watch?

I like the lasting power of Laura’s nail polishes. They seem to be very chip-resistant, even without a top coat.

Hope you had a wonderful weekend too! 🙂

    Hi Ilovecheese,

Girl, you were very productive! If I cleaned out my closets and baked a cake on a Saturday it would be an excuse to reward myself for my productivity. What kind of cake did you bake? I love making cakes from scratch (reminds me of chem lab), but don’t do it as much because I end up eating all of the cake, LOL!

As for the nails, I just apply thin layers one by one and do it slowly. 🙂 I plop myself in front of the TV and expect to just chill for at least an hour while each layer dries.

    Hi Glosslizard,

FUN! I can really see you in a deep raspberry color! I bet against your skin color it looks awesome. You will def. have to go back and snag that…hopefully with some birthday gift cards. I’m guessing you met with the national artist John Fussell?

How are you liking the Astral? I still don’t have my tube yet; I dunno, maybe I’m waiting for the lipgloss gods to miraculously come to my door and bestow me with it, LOL. Or maybe Tabs will leave it for me as a gift on my doorstep! (Then he’d officially be the coolest cat EVER KNOWN TO MANKIND.)

I’ve used Prevage in the past but don’t like the smell (it reminds me of plastic toys, blah). I’m glad you snagged some Even Better along with that fatty Clinique Bonus. I’m very pro-BHA’s these days…

You will have to send me the name of your sushi joint! I loves me some tekka maki…

Oh, I’m going to get Splendeur next Saturday so I can wear it to my birthday dinner! 🙂

Yeah, it was John! I said “My friend interviewed Paris Hilton and asked her what she was wearing on her lips. She said Astral.” He said “Yeah, I sold Paris Hilton her Astral.” 😀 It’s a beautiful sparkle, and super-gorgeous over Strawbaby!

If Tabs starts dragging home Chanel then I need to get some serious cat-training tips from you! 😉

I used Prevage for the first time this morning, and I honestly didn’t notice a smell! I topped it with my moisturizer (which smells wonderful), so maybe that made a difference.

We like Miyuki on Solano Ave. in Berkeley. The fish is nice and fresh and the service is warm and friendly! Prices are not out of line either! Mmmmmmmm…. tekka maki!

    Hey Karen!

I feel like any day now, we’re gonna cross paths in San Francisco! I spent the day at Golden Gate Park yesterday and then drove along Great Highway, the scenic route, back home. The BF and I thought about stopping at Ocean Beach for a split second but then there wasn’t any parking so we headed home. Well, I headed over to Chanel!

The LM nail polish looks really great on you! I need to give myself a mani too 😉

Hope your Sunday was just as fun! Although the heat is disappearing in my neck of the woods 🙁

    Hi Iheartmakeup,

I have it, but I haven’t tried it yet! I might have to next since now I’m going through a silver nail phase (like lipgloss, I also go through color phases when it comes to polish).

Have you tried it? Do you like it? Lots of MAC polishes chip on me, but I still keep my fingers crossed to find the one that changes my mind!

Oh, and thanks for the Silverlicious complement, hee!

    Hi Glosslizard,

Oh the dinner!! You better take a lot of pictures (as I’m sure there will be lots of fun photo ops, LOL).

I’m glad you got to meet John. He’s an amazing artist and really nice, to boot!

I’ve heard from many derms about how wonderful Prevage is but dangit if I can’t get over the plastic smell! My other friend noticed it too, which is why I was curious to know if yours had one. What moisturizer did you put on top?

OMG, I would lay the smack down for some tekka makki right now. And a rainbow roll. And some negi hamanchi… hmm, I think it’s dinner time 🙂

Ha! I wouldn’t be surprised if we did! Sounds like you had a fun day. I love Golden Gate Park… um, just stay away from those Windmills, girl!

Yah, it’s starting to cool down here in Marin Co. It’s beautiful, though. I miss living in a place with warm early mornings and evenings!

You know, those windmills don’t look too scary – but you tell me, are they??

I just hope that the rest of the week stays nice. I know it’s supposed to cool off a little, but if it stayed sunny, I don’t think that’s too much to ask 🙂

How was the weekend with El Hub? Did you get any fun new books at the bookstore?

Here’s to getting through another week! 😀

Hi Karen, most of my weekends are spent like that, I’m a bit obsessive about arranging and cleaning my closets (the hub shoots me a, Oh really? look). The cake was a quick eggless chocolate cake (more like a brownie), and I added brown sugar cos I was out of regular castor sugar, and it actually turned out better and more moist! I’m so happy with my “discovery”, I rewarded myself with an extra piece, or 2 or 3. Heh usually I take only a piece, but this time – half of the cake disappeared thanks to me! {Hips protest loud}.

I’m not a fan of silver polish for some reason (although I thought different in my my teens. My Aiden lives in Atlanta while I’m a New Yorker so I spent the entire weekend with him and got absolutely nothing done. But since I only see my boo once a month, it was well worth it! 🙂

    Ohhhh Lilan,

One of these days I’ll have to sit you down and warn you about those windmills. All I can say now is beware of people going in and out of the bushes. They aren’t bird watching or collecting berries, LOL.

Seriously, girl, I need the help. I get organized from time to time but it’ll only last for a month or until I get really busy (which happens often). Then it all goes to hell. I need some tough love, especially with my shoes and makeup.

OMG, Lilan, you don’t even know. I used to live right next to the park and run by them all the time. I’d see people going in and out and being, ya know, clueless, I just assumed that they were botanists. My friend had to break it down for me, LOL.
