Hold That Curl! Start With a Layer of Waterproof Mascara to Lock In Your Lash Curl

January 27th, 2016 by Karen 19 Comments

k-lashes

If your unruly lashes refuse to hold a curl after you apply mascara, try coaxing them into being more cooperative by starting with a thin layer of waterproof mascara first. Then, follow it up with your regular go-to mascara.

Starting with the waterproof formula should help your lashes hold their curl longer and discourage them from quickly falling out of attention.

This was a recent discovery for me, because something strange happened to my lashes when I got pregnant…

All of a sudden (seriously, it was like it happened overnight), mascara stopped working, and by “stopped working,” I mean none of them — absolutely NONE — would hold a curl. They lost all respect for my lashes and my Shu Uemura lash curler.

I’d curl my lashes and apply a layer of mascara, but less than a minute later, every little lash would be straight as a board again.

Bluh.

So I asked on Facebook for tips, and a wonderful mascara angel suggested this one, LOL! It’s really helped with the curling situation, and it doesn’t seem to matter which waterproof mascara I use, whether high end or drugstore. It just works.

Give it a go sometime if you ever find yourself “lash curl challenged.” 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

    Yep–it’s magic.

I usually only wear WP but I love Perversion and the only way I can use it is OVER WP stuff, so that’s how I do it, over a base of WP.

Funny thing with mascara. I never had long lashes and never bothered to curl them. I have a lash curler contraption and use occasionally. As I’ve gotten older, I seem to have less lashes. After years of using higher-end products, I’ve gone back to “good old” Maybelline Great Lash. I’m pretty happy with what I got.

I’m having the same issue with my short, straight lashes. I’ll have to try this trick!

Yup, I do this now and my lashes (especially the not as hooded right eye) actually holds curl. I just layer a drugstore wp mascara with my mascara of choice over it. Right now I’m using Better than Sex as the second coat, but it’s so clumpy.

Just be careful because some mascaras seem to undo the curl. For me, the Rollerlash that many swear by uncurls my lashes if I layer it as a second coat. So…I’m just using the Rollerlash on my lower lashes. Ugh…

Hmm, wish it weren’t waterproof! I’ve been having great luck with Benefit’s Roller Lash mascara thankfully

I have stick straight lashes and have this same problem every time I curl my lashes and apply mascara. What I found works is to use a lash curler warmed with my hair dryer, then use waterproof Maybelline Lash Discovery mascara (it gets all the lashes at the base) then I layer another mascara for volume. If my lashes don’t stay as curled as I want them to be I use a heated mini lash curler (http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=prod2045869) to set all the layers and this helps it to stay all day. Hope this helps Karen!

I’ve done this for years, but finish with an additional coat of waterproof mascara…ya know, in case of misty eyes! 😉

I am lash curl challenged as you put it, but I hate the crisp feeling my lashes get whenever I apply waterproof formulas.

I’ve been using this neat trick since my eldest cat Zeus was run over and killed. I cried every day for two weeks solid. I curled my lashes, and used waterproof mascara and boom! My lashes stayed curled all day, every day, despite crying throughout the day. Now I use this trick almost every day so my lashes can be seen; one thin coat of it, then followed by some of my favourite volumising mascara for impact 😀
Got a wedding to attend? Just curl and use waterproof mascara only, then you can cry tears of joy without ruining your beautifully curled lashes xx

Yup, this is a trick basically using something natural looking but waterproof as a “primer” and then getting your normal preferred mascara on. I’m too lazy to do it though!

Unfortunately, the WP mascaras that hold curl best have a form of latex in them, and I’m horribly allergic.

Omg!!! I had the same issue during my last pregnancy…my son is now 2 years old and I found that my lashes are just shorter and generally less cooperative. And make in general just seems to melt off me no matter what I do 🙁

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
