How to Make the Most of Your Mascara and Perfect Your Lash Look

December 27th, 2009 by Karen 20 Comments

122709-five-mascara-tips

Good morning, glories. 🙂 A few weeks ago I asked for some of your favorite mascara tricks, and the ones you left were brilliant!

So, here are five fantastic ways to work those lashes with a little help from our friend (mascara)…

1. If you build it…

Try layering multiple mascaras for a look that’s tailor made. buxom-lash-mascara-small

“I love using two different mascaras (one specifically for lengthening, and one specifically for volumizing) to get that full, fake lash look. First, I swipe on a coat of a lengthening mascara, then a coat of a volumizing mascara. If I really really want super huge lashes, I swipe on a another coat of each. Et voila! Fake lashes in a bottle!” – Carolanne

“My tip is to use a variety of mascaras to achieve the perfect look! I currently have Maybelline Full ‘n’ Soft, Maybelline The Colossal, several Clinique samples I’ve received with free gifts and some Bare Escentuals mascara. They are all different formulas, from plumping to curling and everything in between, so I get new benefits with each coat I brush on! My friends tease me about my collection of mascaras, but trust me — IT WORKS!” – Holly G

2. Getting down to business

Business cards aren’t just for networking anymore, LOL! Keep a few of them handy for lash work.business-cards

“I use a business card to shield my lid. It helps me curl my lashes and make sure they’re all coated!” – Spiff

“[I] use a credit card beneath [my] lower lashes to get get them coated nice and good!” – Nina

“I use a business card to gently pull back my upper lid so the lashes are vertical, and I can get at every single one. 🙂 The business card also stops me from getting mascara smudges all over my eyeshadow!” – J

3. It’s getting hot in here…

A little heat can go a looong way when it comes to mascara. hair-dryer

“My secret is to heat my eyelash curler with a hairdryer so that my lashes curl better and stay put!” – Sindy

“One of the best tips I’ve picked up is when your mascara starts getting dried out and clumpy, soak the tube in a cup of HOT water (obviously, with the mascara sealed shut). The heat will help make the mascara formula a little thinner and liquidy, and you can get a few more uses out of it.” – Erica

4. What’s old is new again

Don’t toss out your old mascara wands; recycle ’em instead! wand

“I use my favorite plastic wand from an old mascara to take out any clumps (I always clean it afterwards).” – Melia

“I wipe off the mascara wand as well to help prevent clumping. I also keep an old (but clean!) mascara wand handy and use it before my mascara dries to help separate the lashes if they do get clumpy.” – Toni

5. Powder play

Powder isn’t just for keeping the shine at bay. loose-powder

“[My] fave secret is to use a little extra loose powder under my eyes to catch any mistakes, and then brush it away after applying any eye make-up.” – Sandy

“I use a little powder on my lashes before I apply my mascara to make them look thicker.” – Vanessa S

Now get out there and play with those lashes, ladies! May they always look longer, thicker and clump-free!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I like the idea of putting a card to protect your eyeshadow from mascara smudges. I will try that. It’s not really a problem for me, but just to make sure.

I’ve poked my eyeball with a mascara wand before. Must remember to pay attention! I’ll try the business card thing too, I often smear accidentally!!!

I always save my old mascara because it is dryer then I apply it to my lashes as a base let it dry. They I use the new one on top of that.
    Perfect !

I loving layering mascara and have been for a few years. My favourite layering mascaras are Rimmel London Glam Eyes and Maybelline Collossal Volume Express. I just bought my first Diorshow mascara because The Bay was having a promotion on them, so I can’t wait to mix and match mascara with Diorshow to make my lashes go VA VA VOOM. I trick I use for my mascara application is that I double curl them. I would pre-curl with my Nars curler before mascara and curl them again with a heated lash curler after mascara. The post curling with a heated curler helps hold a stronger curl and gets rid of any clumping.

I generally don’t put mascara on my lower lashes, but I will have to try the business card trick and maybe I will like the result! I have very long lashes to begin with, so I tend to not go too overboard with mascara because I am terrified of the Tammie Faye Baker look.

Wonderful tips! I should mention that if you’re wearing contact lenses, be careful… if you accidentally poke your eye, the mascara sticks and you’ll have to change the lens! Sometimes I’m a little unsteady and my hand jabs my eye, so now I try to be super-careful.

    Hi Karen,
Sorry I missed the entry time to submit my “mascara secret”. But I thought maybe you’d still appreciate it since it makes a HUGE difference in my makeup look. My favorite secret is…
After I apply my mascara, when it’s still wet, I turn my blowdryer to the lowest, coolest setting and hold it directly under my lightly closed eye while gently brushing out any clumps with a clean old mascara wand. I do this with every layer of mascara and it works. I have average lashes (I can’t complain but unfortunately I can’t brag either, haha) and this helps give me the kind of lashes you see in the mascara commercials, aswell as giving me the most GORGEOUS curl ever!
    Try it out ;D
    xoxo Raven

If you happen to be my like me with super straight & difficult to curl lashes, curl your lashes twice prior to mascara application. Then once again after mascara application. What I’ll do is curl at about 1/3 the way down from the base of my lashes and again at 2/3 away from the base. Apply mascara, then I use a heated eye lash curler to lift and separate them.

These are all great tips! My favorite way to get thicker lashes is just to kinda pause the mascara wand at the base of my lashes and THEN sweep upwards. It really loads up the lashes for a more dramatic look!

Hm… I’ve heard its not good to warm up mascara before using it because it harbours bacteria in the tube.

I love using an electronic lash curler, it works a lot better than the traditional kind =)

I have slanty and thick lids to I always end up looking like a racoon. I just use a quick one-or-two swipes of lengthening waterproof. But I haven’t found a good volumizing one… any suggestions? :O

I like the idea of layering, gotta try that. I agree on the warming up your curler with the hairdyer and also using the eyelash curler after applying mascara.
Anyone know how to stop mascara smudging after a few hours?
