What’s the Most Unusual Lipgloss You Own?

July 7th, 2010 by Karen 56 Comments

“I myself am strange and unusual.” — Lydia Deitz, Beetlejuice

Okay, I’ve been seeing a lot of weird lipgloss colors lately (and I like it!).

Take MAC, for instance. Their two most recent collections, Alice + Olivia and In The Groove (both launch on Thursday), have a couple of totally outside-the-box shades.

I.Want.Candy., a bright yellow Dazzleglass Creme gloss ($18) from Alice + Olivia looks like an ’80s neon dream! I’ve heard it looks great on top of matte reds (turns them into shimmery corals), but I haven’t tried it yet. Certainly is unusual, though, isn’t it?

And then there’s You’ve Got It, from MAC In The Groove. It’s a silvery grayish Cremesheen Glass ($18).

Um, gray? For lips?

Both colors are kinda strange, but I think the most unusual ones I have are Tokidoki Prisma Lipgloss in SANDy (a sheer apple green) and JK Jemma Kidd Plumping Gloss in Angelina.

Aren’t they weird??

What’s the most unusual lipgloss you own, and what does it look like?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Happy hump day! 🙂

Hmm…I’m having a really hard time thinking of any glosses right now! I do have a frosty, ice blue lipstick that makes me look like I have frostbite, though! It’s from Victoria’s Secret, purchased years ago when I went through a goth phase. Blue is so much more interesting than basic black!

This makes me want to try I.Want.Candy!

but the MAC I want candy one looks really nice!

Back in the sixties, we didn’t have much in the way of glosses, but most of us had a white lipstick and a green one. Blue was also available, but it wasn’t as popular. I loved my green lipstick because it toned down any color that was overly bright for my OOTD. Pink a bit too “hot”? No problem! One swipe of my trusty green lipstick transformed it into a soft mocha pink.

I haven’t tried any unusual glosses, but now that I remember my green lipstick, I think I’ll go and check out a couple 🙂

      Hi Eileen,

That’s so cool. Have lipsticks changed much since the 60s? Have you noticed a big difference in terms of texture, pigmentation, wear time, etc? I’m so curious…

Althought we had a lot of beautiful colors, most lipsticks were one dimensional and there wasn’t much choice in texture. They also tended to be a bit greasy and heavy. They only lasted a couple of hours which is why in movies from that time, you’ll often see the woman whip out her compact and lipstick (while at the table no less) and freshen her lipstick. Oh how I love lipsticks now-a-days! And glosses–wow! The choices are endless. For many years, the only gloss we had was a red goo that came in a little pot. It went on clear and was really quite beautiful. It was made by Max Factor and was used primarily in movies and television. We’ve come a long way, baby, and I love it. <3

    Hi Karen!

First, I don’t own any kooky lipglosses– yet! But I think I might at least give the bright green a try. 🙂

Also, I watched your MBB video and I have to say, your production and style is great! Can I offer a small suggestion though? I noticed your most relaxed on camera when you’re telling a story from memory… have you ever tried having someone in the room with you (if you don’t already) when you’re filming. If you have someone stand just behind the camera and look at them while you’re talking, rather than at the camera, the viewer will actually end up watching you have a conversation (about the product) with that person, and in turn your voice, stance and body language will all come across as very natural and conversational.

Anyway, this is just my 2 cents because I think your videos are so great and you’re such a pleasure to watch. All the best!

As for how long I’ve been doing this, well I’d say 3 years part time, and 1 year full time now– it’s a challenge but awesome! As for how I got started, I did a lot of odd art jobs to get my name out there and slowly things that I really wanted to do started coming to me– I’ve been really blessed! 😀

How did you get started blogging? 😀

I love the look of that Jemma Kidd blue one and must try it! I have the Benefit California Kissin’ blue sparkly lip gloss. Apparently the blue tint helps to make teeth look whiter, plus it is very minty to freshen breath. I love it! Its quite sheer so it doesn’t wear as true blue thank goodness.

Not so much weird as cool is the Smashbox O-Plump colour changing plumping gloss. I’ve seen it look anywhere from fuschia to coral on different people. I love it! Nice dose of easy colour.

Eileen your post made me think of the Tangee colour changing lipstick for some reason- remember that one 😀

I had a lipgloss from UD called Heatherette. I don’t think it was meant to be “unusual”, but I really didn’t like the color. It was a sort of bronze-y taupe color that looked so weird on my lips. It also smelled funky so I threw it away.

After that, I have Benefit’s Kiss You(?), the fuchsia colored one (I just had to look up how to spell fuchsia!). That’s about as unusual as it gets. I’ve been eyeing out the green one from tokidoki though!

It is “Nice to be Nice” (?) from MAC’s Hello Kitty collection and it’s orange. And I love it! It’s a shimmery bright orange and on a crazy day, I paired it with an orange Shiseido automatic lip pencil and spent a whole day wearing that combo. In my opinion, it was worth the experiment 😀 And I soooo want that green Tokidoki gloss. Yes.

My only unusual lipgloss would be a birthday gift from a couple of years ago, yes I still have it even though I know all about the whole “how long you should keep your make up for”. It’s Lancome’s Juicy Tubes in Icy Pop, it’s a light blue gloss. I LOVE it! the smell, the texture and how it has these subtle blue sparkles! It would be MAC I.Want.Candy Dazzleglass Creme from the Alice + Olivia colleciton. I have been wearing this for the past week and I like it best layered over MAC Pink Cabana and Lollipop Loving Lipsticks. The chartreuse colour makes corals and pinks more nude peachy. It looks very cool on it’s own too.

Well, I do own a black glimmerglass from Style Black (Blackfire), but I don’t really consider it weird since it goes on nearly clear; it just darkens whatever lipstick you have on.
