MAC Unsung Heroes: Ambering Rose Blush

June 27th, 2012 by Karen 33 Comments

Reddish gold, reddish-reddish gold, what? Reddish gold, reddish-reddish gold, huh? Reddish gold, reddish-reddish gold, wussup?

Okay, so MAC Ambering Rose Blush ($20) recently prompted me to do two things. 1) It prompted me to try to find out if there really is such a thing as an ambering rose (she wrote, as she googled “ambering rose,” which turned up this, this and this), and 2) it prompted me to want to get the word out about this gorgeous reddish gold.

I think it looks ah-may-zing on medium and darker skin tones, in particular skin tones from NC and NW 40 on up, but it doesn’t disappoint on fairer maidens, either, especially when applied using a fan brush (like Sonia Kashuk’s $8 Duo Fibre Brush) and a very light touch.

How much red and gold Ambering displays depends on your skin tone. On my NC 42 skin, I get realms of red and golden shimmer with just a hint of apricot. The color reminds me of a sheerer, less intense, but more golden version of NARS Taos, and I started incorporating it into my regular rotation of pink blushes earlier this year to mix things up a little.

To Blushbaby, another love of mine, I say, “I still love ya to bits,” but there are days when mama needs a break from the standard same-o, same-o.

I love the way Ambering Rose blossoms on summer skin. I think the red tones work very well with a tan, but I can also see it being a great color to wear well into fall, when the leaves have turned and the red lipsticks come out (CAN’T WAIT!). Ambering Rose really loves rich, brick red lippies.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Thanks so much for sharing, Karen! I think there is a lot of great stuff in MAC’s permanent line-up that I still have to get to know. Ambering Rose definitely looks like something I can pull off well in summer!

      Hi Hyzenthlay,

Do it! It would look great with your Viva Glam Cyndi lipstick.

How’s your summer going so far? Will you be doing any traveling?

Summer’s going pretty well so far . . . Trying to find a house, but running against our budget and our wishes (as everyone does, I am sure!) . . . Will head up to see my parents at some point. Also, going to go camping with my boyfriend’s family at Lassen (I’ve never been there before!).

So glad to read you’re doing a little better 🙂

I always forget to check out the permanent products! Do you think it would be similar to Peachykeen?

That looks like a really pretty blush! I might be tempted to trade my Nars Orgasm one for that one for the summer. You look great in it 🙂

      Hi Katherine G,

Nars Orgasm is a classic! But it’s also nice to mix it up. Do you have a fan brush handy? Because this baby is pretty pigmented…

Don’t have a fan brush yet. I might have to get one though, I think Sonia Kashuk has a good one. I need to get down to Bethesda to get some MAC stuff! MAC makeup is one thing I don’t own yet, probably because it’s not close to where I live.

      Hi Nina,

Yeah, it took me a while to find this one too. It looks kinda frightening in the pan but once it’s on it’s super pretty.

Is it still crazy hot out there? We’re going through a cool spell right now — 80s!

I am really jealous that you have temps in the 80s. Weve been suffering through 100 degree temps and high humidity — I feel like im walking through cake batter baking in the oven … Which does not seem like a bad idea, mind you!

I like bright blushes – and a fan brush always helps!

LOL! I can’t remember the last time I actually felt like I was in the current season. I’m already thinking about holiday stuff, egads!

How’s the weather out your way treating you guys? Enjoying the heat?

Truth be told, I love fall – it’s my favorite. But, time goes so fast, I’m trying to enjoy the present! I can’t even think about holiday yet. 🙂

Believe it or not, it’s actually been cool and rainy this week (60s). But, yes, we had a stretch where it was almost 100, which was crazy! We did spend a lot of time in the pool and that was really nice. Of course, I spend most of my outdoor time making sure I’m wearing SPF 1000 all over so I don’t burn (or wrinkle!). 🙂 How about you guys? Has Tabs had a chance to perfect his backstroke?

Lovely color! A little deeper than “Wild Sunset” by Estee Lauder, may be? And what a beautiful name! Looks just as lovely on you!

On an aside, i am fascinated by whatever lipcolor(s) you are wearing in this and the previous post!

Last time I visited family in Los Angeles I had a MAC artist suggest this color to me. I hope that I concealed my eye roll as I thought “There’s NO WAY that color will be okay on my fair skin”. I think I considered the girl to be completely out of her mind when she said it was the perfect match with MAC Prolong wear in Prolong (A rich, rich red). That said, guuurrrrl knew her MAC. It’s my FAVORITE now.

I’ve never tried or even swatched Ambering Rose, to be honest. I always get scared of blushes with red tones because I have a problem with redness on the tip of my nose sometimes, so I don’t like to accentuate with a red-toned blush. But this looks like it has enough peachy/apricot tones to balance it out. I will def have to try this next time I’m at the MAC counter

Very nice. I almost picked this up the other day. Then when I looked carefully, i realized that it the blush is pretty close to Nars Taos, which I already own. I try not to buy colors that are too similar.
