The MAC Lunar New Year Collection for 2018: 5 Things You Need to Know

January 24th, 2018 by Karen 22 Comments

mac lunar new year 2018

1. You’re gonna have to hunt for it

The collection just launched a few days ago, buuut it’s already sold out online (it’s only seven pieces total). If you see something you gotta have, well…I’m sorry, babe. Maybe call your friendly neighborhood MAC sales associate, and keep your fingers and toes crossed. They might still have something hidden behind the counter.

(Note: At last check, the five Lipsticks ($17.50 each), and the Luck and Fortune Eye Shadow Palette ($32) and Powder Blush Duo ($29) are all sold out online.)

2. Sadly (because they’re so hard to find), the lipsticks are a peach and/or pink lip lover’s dream come true

SO MUCH PEACH AND PINK! I spend 99% of my lipstick life wearing those colors (sorry, no corpse-y gray for this girl), so these are lipstick nirvana for me.

  • The two Satins — My favorite shades are muted peachy pink Good Health and soft peach Peachy New Year, which has golden pearl. Both of them are pigmented, apply smoothly, don’t dry out my lips and last a decently long amount of time (’bout four hours). I also ? them as cream blush.
  • The two Mattes — Dusty rose To Luck! is opaque and doesn’t catch my lip flakes, but it’s a little drying…and I think bright pinkish coral Prosperity is pretty, but it isn’t as intensely pigmented as To Luck! And it also latches onto every minuscule micro flake on my lips.
  • The Cremesheen — If you like pale blueish pinks, you might like creamy light pink Pure Happiness. It’s semi-sheer, which I’m fine with, but I’m not crazy about this one on me… I’m a MAC NC42, and I think it looks a little weird on me for some reason.

3. Props to the Powder Blush Duo

I only need one light layer of warm pink Love Token for naturally flushed cheeks, and light pale peach Long Life & Happiness is also surprisingly pigmented. Both shades are a cinch to blend, too. They skate across skin and feather out almost as well as Melba, my favorite MAC matte blush of all time.

I really like this duo because most of the time I just want a little color on my cheeks, which is exactly what this duo delivers. That exact look.

4. The nine-pan eyeshadow palette is a mid-toned cornucopia

There’s one light beige shadow and one dark brown, but the other seven shades are all somewhere in the chromatic middle. Lots of them are variations on mid-toned taupe, peach or pink.

Even though there’s a Satin and Lustre in there, overall, this still looks like a matte eyeshadow palette to me, and it’s very warm, soft and romantic. It makes me think of a pretty watercolor painting.

You can see the palette in action in this Meow-entine’s Day! ? ? tutorial.

5. Minor fallout alert

With the eyeshadows, but it isn’t too bad. I just have to do a little cleanup after doing my eyes.

Le sigh… In an alternative universe, we’d live somewhere where LE products would never sell out. Wouldn’t that be dreamy?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Wow, the lipsticks and blush duo are sooo pretty. I love all the names, too – like you could attract good karma just by wearing them! But this right here? is my number one complaint about the cosmetic industry and the thing I would like to see stop in 2018 – the silly LE makeup that sells out before you even know it exists, and Mac seems to be one of the worst about this. Just this past Christmas the Snowball line was gone by Halloween, and most of us probably didn’t even find out about it until it was too late! I wish I knew what motivated them to do this. I wish they would let some of these pretty collections stick around for awhile, and maybe they would become popular enough to become permanent. They look great on you though, and I’m glad I got to see the collection, even if I can’t actually buy any of it! (LOL)

The packaging is adorable. I wanted to get something, probably a lipstick. But by the time I looked everything was already gone 🙁

At least they wouldn´t sell out until everyone has had a chance to get a few bits. I sometimes feel with the more hyped up collections that unless you are sitting there at stroke midnight, refreshing the website, you don´t stand a chance. Don´t even think about swatching them first!

Well, MAC knows how to keep their fans in a frenzy with the LE releases. I’m always amazed to hear how quickly things sell out! All these colors are super-pretty and perfect for spring. 🙂

These are really pretty colors. I love pinks and peaches, but I’m not sure if they would always look good with my skin tone. Crazy how fast it sold out!

They sold out SO quickly! I really didn’t expect them to go that fast. I hope they do a restock (unlikely though) because I really want one of those lipsticks. And the packaging is so cute, but not too cutesy.

After the Selena fiasco, I decided to never trust the MAC website again. They seem incapable of handling LE launches. Also, I noticed that whenever a new collection launches (even if it says exclusive to MAC online and select stores) the products have a very good chance of showing up online at Macy’s, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, and Neiman Marcus. In fact that’s how I managed to nab this collection. I woke up at midnight to see if it would launch on MAC (it did not) but, lo and behold, it was available on Macy’s and with free in store pickup in my area. I ebates-ed that shiz and got a pretty good deal. When I left for work later that morning at 4:30 (PST), MAC was just starting to push out the products on their site. By the time I arrived at the office at 6, the collection was sold out. :/ Poor form MAC.

Understandable that they’ve sold out already. They’ve only done this 20,000 times so far so they probably don’t know how many to stock so people who want some can get a chance if they don’t buy them at one nanosecond past midnight when they first put them up.

I am from Germany and it didn’t sell out that fast here. Actually, I didn’t know about the release date and checked my e-mails last week one night. There it was, the collection, online. I knew I would not get a chance to check it at a store because there is non around. I googled swatches, watched YouTube Reviews and could calmly decide what to pick. Now it is sold out, but I never had a more stressless collection start than this one.
I got the two Satin Lipsticks and was unsure if they would suite my skintone, but they are brighter than I expected and are really lovely!

Love the lipsticks, like I need another pink! What I really love is the Tuxedo Cat in glasses. Looks just like my kitty Star. She would definitely rock those while in the home office!

      Hi Lily,

I sometimes like to imagine that Tabs walks around in glamorous cat eye frames like this one! His would be pink with rhinestones, of course.

      How is Red doing?

Red has been a little grumpy lately. My DH, his favorite, has been traveling more than usual. I’ll do in a pinch, but after several days he’s ready for Daddy to come back home.

It’s a really pretty collection with lovely packaging. I have too much of these kinds of shades, though, so I’ll be passing.

I’m also a NC42. When I tried the lipsticks at my local Macy’s (they had all sold out!), I found that To Luck showed orangey/ coral instead of red on my lips, It could be because of my lip pigmentation. Did it show up as reddish on your lips?
