Meet MAC Basic Bitch From the MAC Girls Collection and Her Posse of Plums and Grays

From the MAC Girls collection, the new Basic Bitch palette ($39.50)

OK, now, last time I checked, my sense of humor was more or less intact, but I dunno… Would you like to open your makeup bag and see a palette with the words “Basic Bitch” on it?

Eh, I wouldn’t.

I totally get that it’s supposed to be cheeky, but I’m not feelin’ that word (bitch). I guess I’m a Prissy Princess that way, ha!

Word bias aside, I like this palette more than I thought I would. For a smoky eye palette, performance-wise, it’s downright exceptional. In terms of fallout, which is usually my main concern when it comes to dark eyeshadows like these, I hardly see any — so little that I think you could do your foundation first and whip out the smokiest of smoky eyes while only having to flick away a few flecks here and there. It’s kind of amazing that way.

I’m wearing the palette on my eyes and cheeks. The lip is Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim Lipstick in My Favorite.

I like that MAC loaded it up with grays, plums and purples (there’s also a bit of black, too, though), and there isn’t an incredibly wide chasm among the colors in terms of contrast, if that makes any sense. Feathering out deep grays and plums like these is much easier than blending out dark, starker black and black-based shades, so these smoky shades are surprisingly wearable.

Smokaaaaaay!

Despite the fact that I could happily do with a different name, I still like this palette. A lot! It’s at MAC counters now for a limited time, along with the rest of the MAC Girls crew. It’s $39.50 and has eight shadows and a powder highlighter.

That girl is poison has food poisoning

I’m pretty sure I had food poisoning yesterday (from a chicken Bánh Mì sandwich I ate the day before yesterday), because I was basically rendered completely useless for 24 hours of almost nonstop vomiting.

And I really, REALLY hate vomiting (I’m gonna go out on a limb and assume I’m not the only one). I also can’t stand doing it in front of other people, even El Hub, a.k.a. “The Man Who Has Seen Everything,” and by “everything,” I mean EVERYTHING (you cross that threshold when you have a baby).

I’m doing better now, and all that time on the couch nursing a big bottle of Gatorade gave me the chance to re-watch a few episodes of Game of Thrones, season one.

It’s bittersweet knowing how the story unfolds, especially for the Starks… They have a pretty rough road ahead of them.

Oh, George R.R. Martin, why you gotta play the Stark kids like that?!

That time I took a selfie with the guy who wrote Game of Thrones…

Anyway, on the couch I also stumbled on this gem of a mash-up between GoT and Bohemian Rhapsody. Enjoy!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Did you watch the Leslie Jones live commentary on the last episode of Game of Thrones? It was with Seth Myers and it was hilarious!

Your photos look extra amazing, I mean your hair needs it’s own standing ovation, but I’m sorry you weren’t feeling well! That sucks. I’m glad you’re on the mend.

That is an epic selfie! You’re hair and makeup are anything but basic in these pics! Food poisoning is the worst cause you feel like you’re gonna die and half wonder if you should be going to the doctor.

That word is precisely why I won’t even look at that palette and I’m reconsidering further purchases from MAC in the future. Unnecessary, rude and demeaning.

I saw the exact same video yesterday evening, the cross between Bohemian Rhapsody and GOT, it is amazing! There are a whole lot of others too, but some even contain spoilers for people that are up to date with the current season, so venture there with caution.

I’m wondering if Mac thought these names through? What’s the point, even if I like the eyeshadows it’s a no thanks. Actually, I was at the Mac store yesterday and as I was looking at the palettes, I noticed we received four rather than six in the UK. I was then told that Prissy Princes and Basic Bitch aren’t allowed here because of the name connotations. I’m Greek and even if my command of English is good, I had no idea what’s a Prissy is …. or how it’s used. Once explained to me I thought ok, I can see why that wouldn’t go down well in the UK. Mac teams sacrificing sales for names? Don’t get it!

Hmm, I agree with Eleni above, I don’t really get what they were thinking with the name here, no matter how nice the shades are, or how well they perform… :-/ Plus… even if a look is ‘basic’ or simple, I don’t think I like the idea of ‘basic’ being applied to a whole person, as the name suggests. But… more importantly, I hope you’re OK after the food poisoning incident. Haven’t had anything like that in a long time, thank goodness, but I do remember similar situations in the past… ugh, not nice. 🙁

Mac should have realized that people are very sensitive and easily offended these days and came up with different names. Personally…..I don’t really care what my products are named. I don’t really remember the names of most of them. I like this one….it seems like a nice assortment to do dramatic looks. BTW….I do love the new haircut!!

I’d be all “MAC, stop judging me… I’m not at ALL basic”. 😉 Kidding aside, I agree that names can kill the products for some people – it’s a fine line between cheeky and offensive.

I’m sorry about your food poisoning. I hate vomiting with the heat of 1000 suns. I’d rather feel nauseous for 24 hours than throw up once and then feel fine. I’m the one brushing my teeth 700 times and chanting “please don’t let me pukc….”.

I have no idea how I missed your selfie with GRRM. That is amazing. He has like a Hodor sized head compared to yours in that pic. 🙂

I think they’re trying too hard to look hip and up to date with the names. Some things are better left to hashtags and social media. Not everything is meant to end up in a MAC collection.

I can see why people find the name off-putting, but it gives me a chuckle. I like to call myself a basic bitch as a term of endearment. It’s just that “basic” is so subjective. I’m glad you give this palette your seal of approval, because I’m wavering between Basic and Prissy Princess.

Hope you’re feeling better today. Food poisoning is the worst. I’m with you on vomiting.
OMG, you met George R.R. Martin?!!! So cool.

Hate this name for a palette. Not sure what MAC was thinking on this one. That said, I think if it’s good, then it deserves a good depotting into a z-palette.

I seriously laughed when I saw the name for this. You don’t need to use a name like that to stay relevant, MAC. *shakes head* The colors on the other hand are nice.
