Give Me Liberty of London (and Cupcakes)

March 12th, 2010 by Karen 80 Comments

Breakfast of champions!

Last night El Hub brought home some mini-cupcakes from a bakery he passes on his way home from work. 🙂 They were red velvet, lemon and chocolate, and THIS is how I felt when I opened the box:

Frickin’ sweet tooth’s always getting in the way of the whole eating better thing, grrr!

I managed to exercise enough restraint (shocking!) to save two of ’em for, um, my breakfast today, but I think the sugar messed with my brain. All I could think of was cupcake-inspired makeup looks, which lead to this pink attempt with a dash of purple.

Using products from MAC’s Give Me Liberty of London and MAC Too Fabulous, I started with a pink lip courtesy o’ Lip Pencil in Trimmed in Pink (a creamy pink from Too Fab), Lipstick in Petals & Peacocks (a creamy pinkish magenta) and Lipglass in English Accents (a creamy bluish pink), and because it reminded me of cupcake frosting I applied Beauty Powder in Shell Pearl (a shimmery golden peach) to my lips with my fingers.

Trying to keep the same color vibe for the eyes, I chose Eyeshadow in Dame’s Desire (a shimmery reddish purple) for my lids and Shell Pearl Beauty Powder in the crease…

I like how the purple kinda flashes when I blink. 🙂

Additional eye makeup used for the look: Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden (as a base all over the lid); LORAC Front of the Line Pro Liquid Liner (upper lash line); MAC Technakohl in Graphblack (waterlines); MAC Eyeshadow in Bough Grey and Shell Pearl Beauty Powder (smudged together along the lower lash line); and MAC Studio Fix Lash Mascara in Black (upper and lower lashes).

To bring it all together, I reached for a fan brush and lightly dusted MAC Powder Blush in Dirty Plum onto my cheeks. The color’s pretty dark and pigmented, so I used sheer layers and built it slowly, taking care to buff out the edges.

Last (but not least!), I added a sprinkling of shimmer along my upper cheekbones with the Beauty Powder in Shell Pearl.

What do ya think? Too draggy? Not draggy enough?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. What colors are you wearing today? Was anyone else feelin’ the pinks or purples?

I really like the pinks and purples together and you are making me want Peacocks and Petals lipstick. The Diry Plum blush is actually quite pretty once the “dirtiness” of the colour settles in grows on me, I tried it on today at the counter. From this collection, I picked up Blue India polish, Bough Gray e/s and Ever Hip l/s. I may just go back and get the birds and berries, primer and proper blush and Petals and Peacock lipstick. Speaking of breakfast for champions, have you read the book? It is a good book and I recommend it.

I think I will go back to get Petals and Peacocks because I love a pinky fuchsia lip. Breakfast of Champions is by Kurt Vonnegut. The book’s story line is hard to explain as it is fragmented and random. In general, it is about a deranged Pontiac dealer Dwayne Hoover who is obsessed with the writings of Kilgore Trout and takes them to literal truth. It is a strange book but I enjoyed it.

I’d love to see Petals & Peacocks on its own on you! This look is super pretty, I love the colours you used. I only wish I could pull off pinks a bit better. Today was all about neutrals and peaches for me! I did a mini drugstore haul and got a Maybelline Colour Sensational lippie in Peachy Scene, so pretty!

I love the look on you — you look smashin’!!!

I think I am officially in love with the Beauty Powder in Shell Pearl… and I hate to say this but Dame’s Desire is on my list now….

I know I said no more eyeshadows but … its so pretty!!!

Today I rocked an orange look that I combined with a soft brown eyeshadow and brown liquid eyeliner – that was my ode to Spring: it cant come soon enough. Its cold here again!!!

Guess what? It’s rainy again here too, boo!

At least daylight savings is right around the corner. I can’t wait for the longer days!

How’s your night going so far, btw? I just finished eating dinner (leftover fried rice, so not sexy); now I think I’m gonna pop over to Marshall’s to look at their shoe section.

I really dont get what is holding up Ms. Spring! 😀

My night was great – we walked, got Thai takeout and brownies and I read some. Im alternating Time Traveller’s Wife with a book called Summer Knight – which is part of the Dresden Files. Its a series about a wizard living in modern times and fighthing crime, supernatural or otherwise.

Today were about to do the grocery store dance, have lunch at a Polish place and spend time outdoors – its chilly but brilliant outside today!!!

How was the shoe section? 😉

I didn’t make it that far, boo! I pretty much stuck to the shirts and workout clothes… I need some motivation to start running again! Today I plan on hopping by… for some reason I’m kinda stuck on the idea of cage shoes. Dunno if I can pull ’em off though, because I have really long toes, LOL.

That’s cool that you’re reading Dresden Files! El Hub is reading one of the books right now… apparently fairies are very naughty in the supernatural world, who knew?

Ive been staring at cage shoes forever but I am toe shy LOL … but you should try `em on!!!

I need to find some good workout capris for the summer … maybe tomorrow!

Remember the time era before capris? There was a spell in the 90s where they were MIA!

I love the idea of cage shoes but maaaan my feet look weird in them! It’s like they make my toes all extra long!

I am no longer 20-something either, and my hubby and I have found that we’re not as powerful anymore when we hit the All-You-Can-Eat Sushi bars, hahahaha…I used to eat tons of them egg tarts too, only now, I space all of them between days and weeks. We may all be getting a little older, but at least we can still be beautiful, yes? =)

Wait – you’re up in the SF area?? The Golden Gate Bakery is supposed to be FAMOUS for their egg tarts. Enough where a long line is there every morning when they’re made fresh. One day, I will journey there. But since you’re up there already, perhaps you can get a fresh hot one one of these days too!

One of the reasons why I like this purple is ’cause it’s actually really wearable… it’s easy to blend, layer, and you can totally take it down a notch (as a soft wash) if you feel like it’s too BADA-BING on the eyes. 🙂

Stop brain, stop brain. We do not need CUPCAKES. God, the pink cupcake looks so good (I hate chocolate cupcakes).

I wore Benefit’s Strut today. I’ve been feeling grey lately. And Stila Lip Glaze in Grapefruit. What really bugs me is that Stila doesn’t fill up those stupid pens all the way up with lipgloss and the twisty thing is so LOUD. I feel sorta bad shelling out $22 for a pen only half-full of lipgloss that has a clicker the volume of an atomic bomb going off when the class is taking a test and I need a lipgloss refresher (oh yea, that was only slightly awkward).

Oh yes, just so you can see the number Zena did to my brushes, I give thee The
    Brush Homicides

The good news is I have three brushes coming home soon (soon as in when USPS puts them in my mailbox).

Oh, you will LOVE IT! It’s a lot of fun, and the creamy consistency feels really nice on the lips.

      Have a great weekend!

What foundation/ powder combo were you using for these pictures? Your skin was looking better than ever. 🙂

      Hi Thais,

In the pics above I used:

Hourglass Mineral Primer (I really do think it makes a diff in the smoothness of the final look)
      Laura Mercier Oil-Free Foundation
A 50/50 mix of MAC Prep+Prime and Blot Powder buffed into the skin

Oh my god, I love this! I think I might actually try to slowly buy this look! Or at the very least use it as inspiration!

Looks great on you but I think the collection as a whole is a little to bright for me 🙂

Im loving the look Karen 🙂
I felt in a pink and purple mood today. So im wearing Laura Mercier eye basics in pink as a base. Then the hot pink from the Smashbox heartbreaker collection on the lid.The purple from the same collection on the crease. And the white on the brow bone. Same collection again.
Then summer rose beauty powder. Porecelian pink msf. On my lips its a beauty rush lipgloss thats a gorgeous purple 🙂

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
