Despite Our Differences (in Color Temp), I’m Warming Up to the MAC Me Over Collection’s Lady Grey Quad

August 29th, 2011 by Karen 23 Comments

One of my favorite pieces from the new MAC Me Over collection (on counters now) turned out to be something I never expected to like.

“How cool!” I said the first time I spotted the Lady Grey quad’s greenish gray, and I meant it both in terms of wow factor, as I thought the shade was subtle, but interesting and different, and color temp, because like many of the other colors in Icelandic Cool, the sub-collection to which Lady Grey belongs, it leans cool.

Right away the color, and the other shades of green, gray, beige, white, taupe and purple that comprise Icelandic Cool, melted my heart, but I thought I’d have a difficult time getting the cool-toned shade to cooperate with my warm-toned skin.

Still, it didn’t stop me from trying.

For gals who wear cool-toned colors well, Lady Grey shouldn’t pose a problem, but if your skin’s on the warmer side of the color temp spectrum (like mine), it could prove to be tricky.

But that’s no reason to pass on this gorgeous quad, and here are a couple of things I like to do to make cool colors like these easier to wear.

1. Use a creamy neutral or warm-toned eyeshadow as a base

I feel like it helps to balance the overall eye look, adding a bit of subtle warmth to offset the cooler tones.

For these pics, I started by layering MAC Shadestick in Butternutty beneath the colors in the Lady Grey quad. It’s a light neutral beige, also from MAC Me Over.

2. Sweep a warm brown eyeshadow into the crease

Adding a warm brown into the crease can also help offset cooler colors like the ones in the lovely Lady Grey quad.

Here I swept MAC Eyeshadow in Soft Brown into my crease before patting and blending a mix of Lady Grey (the greenish gray) and Hazy Day (the mid-tone gray) on my lids.

No reason to let a thing like color temps get between a gal and gorgeous makeup. 🙂

Also cool…

I’ve been obsessively stalking the J Brand website for months hoping to find my favorite 811 jeans available in new colors.

NOTE: If you’re vertically challenged (like me), the 811s could change your life, fo’ reals.

They even look great when you’re jumping in the middle of the street

Anywho, EUREKA! I’m thinking about the gray pair…

So how was the rest of your Monday? Good, I hope.

El Hub had to work late tonight, so I just watched a little TV and had froyo for dinner.

Perfect. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I feel like I’m so out of the loop with MAC collections lately. They have way too many IMO.

Eric ia back! What did you think of TB?

Marisol!! I know your asking K-dawg… but I can’t help but comment on TB post!! I kinda like the old Eric back I think he is sexier still sweet but has a …no pun intended bite to him. I kinda wish Sookie and Eric could be together longer 🙁 I’m an ERIC FAN 🙂 can you tell!

He was too wussy for my taste with his amnesia. I’m totally team Eric. Although I do hold a special place in my heart for Alcide’s abs 🙂

I’ve read the books & Alan Ball has made some changes. I keep wondering what he will do with the show. If he changes it too much, he might disappoint the fans of the books.

The makeup is super pretty on you!!!! I just got in the mall today my package from make. I got moleskin, creamy bisque, carbonized, and (thanks to Texas heat wave 🙁 a little melted), Prince Noir! Can’t wait to play with them all tomorrow!!! 🙂

LOVE the green-gray shade! also, adding a warm toned eyeshadow in the crease is a great idea, i shall try that with some of my cooler toned shadows :).

Love those colours, they look gorgeous on you! I think I have an old palette with similar tones from Body Shop, but I won’t even dare compare Body Shop makeup to MAC. 🙂

I’ve been dreaming of those jeans since you first mentioned them (vertically challenged, hello) but the brand is so damn pricey in the UK. 🙁 I should first work on getting back into my Topshop skinnies – going swimming at lunchtime!

I keep circling this quad at the MAC store. I love the purple but am undecided about the other colors. But, I have too many MAC quads where I’ve wound up only using one color.

That’s a fabulous picture of you jumping in the street! I’m totally laughing.

I’m on the cool side of the spectrum but gray shadow kind of makes me look like Earl (insert zombie here). No surprise that you can make it work, though. 🙂

I’m sure you’ve watched TB by now. What did you think? I was soooo glad to see the Eric glare (and hear the sarcastic quips). And I’m glad that AB didn’t kill Tara off after all; she and Holly were making me laugh.

Gorgeous colors! Thanks for the tips on making them work for warmer skin tones.

I spent Monday catching up on True Blood. I really liked the episode and as usual can’t wait for next week. Can’t believe the season is almost over!

Have you played with the Evil Eye quad from the MAC ME OVER collection??? I’m absolutely obsessed with it! Which says a lot for someone who is scared of anything other than neutral tones.

Hahahaha! You know what, Karen? I love how goofy you can be. I mean it in the best possible way. There are a lot of beauty bloggers out there who are too serious. I keep coming back to your blog because you fill it with quirkiness and humour.

Hehe, although you provide lots of great information, you also sprinkle fun photos (like of Tabs Photoshopped) and of you jumping in the street. I love it! And I appreciate all the hard work you put into each post. 🙂

    Thank you, Karen!

Saw my first TB episode yesterday at my sister’s apartment since she DVR’d it. Was definitely more than a little surprised to see a sex scene about 5 minutes into it. Pretty much full on, no less! Happened to mention it to the husband…now he wants to watch the show and catch up on past seasons. At least I’ll be watching something different when Burn Notice summer finale happens in two weeks!

I love the Lady Grey quad! I had no interest in buying any new MAC quads, but I saw swatches of this one and read that the quality was good. I also saw it used on someone at a MAC counter and that was it. I don’t even think it leans so cool that those with warm skintones (like me!) can’t wear it. The colors look extra beautiful layered over Street Cool or Heirloom Shadesticks. This quad is gorgeous!

Looks gorgeous!! Some people can pull off any tone of shadows. Unfortunately I can only do cool tones.
