Checking In: A Chanel Blush Brush Haunting, and a Jewel-Toned FOTD With Purple Lids!

October 20th, 2020 by Karen 19 Comments

urban decay born to run purple look k lids closed

I will totally get to these purple lids in a second (BECAUSE PURPLE), but first, can we pleeeeease talk about the latest mystery to unfold on this end of the keyboard — a mystery also known as “The Haunting of Casa MBB”?

Don’t worry, there’s nothing terribly sinister afoot (I’m not splashing buckets of holy water on things left and right, in case you’re wondering!).

I’ve been gently “haunted” for the past few weeks by my favorite Chanel blush brush, which has been disappearing and reappearing all over the house in the most random places. I’ve found it on my bed, in the hallway, on the middle of the stairs, on the kitchen floor.

Last week I found it smack dab in the middle of living room, just sitting there on the carpet right in front of the couch.

Hmm… 🤔

I just assumed that Connor had grabbed it and played with it and forgot to put it back, but when I asked her about it later she said, “No, mama, I have my own brushes.” (Hahaha! She totally does!)

Now, this brush just so happens to be one of my favorite blush brushes because it’s super soft, and the brush head fits perfectly on top of the apples of my cheeks and underneath the hollow of my cheekbones, so I can use it for blush and bronzer. The bristles are also perfectly floofy, so it blends like a dream.

I thought, if an otherworldly entity/spirit has been obsessing over it, I completely understand.

But it ended up not being due to a makeup brush-loving ghost. The disappearances were in fact due to a cat.

rosie posie chanel blush brush

YUP! Look who I just found outside my office doing her “hunter’s mewl.” It’s this cute little growl/grumble Rosie Posie does whenever she stalks and hunts one of her soft toy balls and she wants to show off the riches of her spoils.

I went into the hallway to investigate and give her the usual attention she likes after she catches her prey (“Oh, good job, Rosie-Pose! You’re such a good mouser. Look how well you stalked your toy!”), and that’s when I caught her red-handed (red-pawed?) with my Chanel brush in her mouth.

Mystery solved!

I guess from this point forward, this brush will have a special hiding place…inside a drawer!

(QUICK UPDATE: Later in the day, I also caught her dragging my NARS blush brush around, so she appears to be expanding her hunting horizons.)

Jewel-toned purple lids

OK, so let’s talk purple lids. Now, this might look a little familiar to ya because I’ve been doing variations of this look using the same neutral colors in the crease, inner corner and lash lines, but with different jewel tones on the lids. First, green, and then blue, and now purple!

Find your core

This totally wearable look relies on finding a core group of matte brown and beige eyeshadows for your crease colors. Once you find ones you like, then you can just keep them on standby, and then quickly swap out the jewel tone on your lids with other colors to create different looks!

I’ve been using the same set of warm browns and beiges in this series…

  • Beige matte shadow base: NARS Tinted Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base in Light
  • Beige shadow: MAC Mylar
  • Light warm matte brown shadow: MAC Soft Brown
  • Mid-toned warm matte brown shadow: MAC Saddle
  • Dark mate brown shadow: MAC Brun
  • Bronze pencil: MAC Teddy

For the purples, I’m wearing a shimmery purple called Guilt Trip, a dark purple called Drift (both are from the Urban Decay Born to Run Palette) and a dark purple UD pencil called Empire.

The foundation, powder blush/bronzer and lipstick are the same products I recently used in a 10-minute makeup look in this It Cosmetics Foundation review (which I’m also wearing in this pic, by the way).

As you can see, I’m pretty stoked about this look, and I’m excited to wear makeup again! 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I didn’t think it was possible for cats to have a guilty face!
I suspected it was her but at least she knows her makeup tools.

I gotta hand it to her… The cat has great taste in tools!

I knew it was Rosie-Posie before you said so. I used to keep all my fabulous brushes on my vanity (in containers) but my boy Jax is obsessed with them, tipping over the containers, playing with the brushes and yes, dragging them all around the house. they now live above a bathroom cabinet 😉

I knew it was Rosie before you finished your story! LOL!

See, now, here’s my concern with getting a cat. What do I do with all my makeup in my vanity room/office? Do I put everything away in drawers? Then the makeup desk will look so bare and ugly. Do I leave everything out and just hope the cat ignores everything! Ah, the tough choices!

It really depends on the cat! My cat Tabs pretty didn’t stalk brushes the way Rosie does. (He was more interested in lash curlers.) You could always just close the door; that’s what I end up doing before I go to sleep (or whenever I leave the house). That way I know Rosie won’t get into things!

My cat often pesters me in the morning at the bathroom sink until I say “You want makeup on?” and I have to let him play with a couple of my brushes; he especially loves an eyebrow/eyelash spoolie. I just have to remember to wash afterwords, don’t want cat drool germs on my face!

Aww, how funny! Does he also try to grab a drink from the faucet after he “puts his face on”? I’ve noticed that Rosie is *very* interested in drinking from the sink lately. She cracks me up. 🙂

No he is scared of the sink or any running water but I do have cup on the floor in that bathroom which is his preferred water source.

I’m sure he appreciates it… But one day, don’t be surprised if he just knocks it over so he can show you who’s boss. LOL! Boy cats are jerks that way!

So many colors I have and love in this look! Teddy! Empire! Saddle! I love violet, lavender and purple shadows.
Ok, the makeup brush situation. Lol. Nora didn’t steal makeup brushes. But when I kept them upright in a cup or jar she would hop up and chew on them. She would hop up on the bathroom counter and chew on our toothbrushes, too. Grr. So the toothbrushes got moved from the open counter to the medicine cabinet.
For all my makeup brushes I bought a three drawer, clear acrylic case from MUJI (so sad that MUJI U.S. file for bankruptcy) and I keep them laying flat in the drawers. Top drawer is shadow brushes and other small brushes. Middle drawer are cheek brushes and bottom drawer are foundation and bronzer brushes. It was the only way to keep Nora away from the brushes. Oh and I had to move my kitchen knives from a knife block into one of those drawer inserts with the slots, because I caught her rubbing and gnawing on my knife handles too. As much as I miss Nora, I don’t miss her gnawing and chewing habit.
Couldn’t have flowers or plants in the house either, for the same reason. She once knocked over a vase of flowers and flooded my dining room table. Luckily I found it in time so it didn’t ruin the table. Cats!

Saddle is a classic. Do you have MAC Sable? Sable + Saddle = MAGIC!

And yes, cats are so nuts, but I guess that’s why we love them so. What’s funny to me is each cat’s individual personality quirks. Tabs never hunted things around the house, however he loved to “cack-cack-cack” at all the birds in the trees (something Rosie never does).

Had no idea MUJI filed for bankruptcy! 🙁

Oh yes! Sable too! I love those classic MAC colors.
Yes, cats can drive their employees nuts with their demands and behaviors. But their purrs always win everyone over. Nora used to sit in the window and “ack-ack-ack” at the birds too! Nibbler never makes noises when she sees birds. There’s a hummingbird that likes to taunt her off Dear Daughter’s apartment deck.

What is it about makeup brushes? I swear Rosie thinks all of mine were made just for her!

Hope you’re having a nice week so far, Chelsea.

You’re rocking the jewel tones! Rosie was my first suspect. One of our gals does that with pens/pencils. But she makes a very distinct crying noise as she carries them over for her praise. 🙂 I’m also very glad to see that Rosie has good taste. Focusing in on the Chanel brush? Classy. HAHA!

Aww, that face though, how can you be mad? Hehe. One of my cats LOVES makeup brushes and he runs around the house with them with the brush part in his mouth all the time while I chase him because he thinks it is a game. SIGH. If only they knew how tedious it is to clean them! And, in your case, how expensive they can be. LOL. My cat thinks they are toys to bat around on the floor so I guess I should be thankful he doesn’t just chew them? But what IS bad is that he also thinks my Beauty Blender is a toy and has pierced that with his teeth. Like hello, that is $26CDN!

This is a beaaaaaautiful makeup look! You look great in purples and that blush on you is perfect!

My cat Tabs LOVED Beauty Blenders and destroyed his share of them. I should’ve saved all of the ones with his teeth marks (such a cat lady thing to say).

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
