What’s the Most Underrated Drugstore Beauty Product?

December 4th, 2011 by Karen 47 Comments

Wearing NYC New York Color Liquid Lipshine in Big Apple Spice

OOH! So many to choose from, but the first, best one that comes to mind now is one I’ve mentioned many times before, one of my drugstore standbys for many years, Sally Hansen’s Diamond 12-Hour Lip Treatments. They’re just $6 each, sometimes less when they’re on sale, and I think they’re all kinds of great, like drugstore versions of a MAC Lipglass.

NYC New York Color Liquid LipshineBuuut, as soon as I finished writing that last paragraph, I remembered the NYC New York Color Liquid Lipshines, which sell for an amazing $2.49 each!

Yup, $2.49. Less than the price of a soy chai latte (mmm… chai). Like the Sally Lip Treatments, they’re light and non-sticky with lots of rich color, and they somehow manage to deliver at one heck of a bargain basement price.

What do you think? What’s the most underrated drugstore beauty product that comes to mind?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I am in love with Clean & Clear oil free dual action moisturizer. This stuff is amazing! Softens skin, clears blackheads and pimples, makes my skin “oil manageable”, and keeps fine lines at bay.

A recent love from the drugstore has been the new concealer from Maybelline (the one with the little rollerballie type thing on the top). I also love “Nutty” eyeshadow by Wet n Wild. I just wrote a review of it on my blog, it’s my favorite taupe eyeshadow right now. Another drugstore fave would be the Physicians formula tinted moisturizer in the orange tube. I think you were lukewarm about it when you reviewed it a while back, but I’m fortunate in that they carry one for my extremely pale skin! (I’m too pale for MAC *_*)

    Wet& Wild eyeshadows, hands down.

And Physician;s Formula Pearl powders, they could compete with some of the recent luxury highlighters.

Wet n Wild Kohl Kajal Brow/Eyeliner. I’ve been using the taupe shade to fill in my brows for years. It’s very creamy and blendable, looks very natural with my dark brown brows and stays put all day. It only costs a dollar or two at the drugstore and it’s longer than most eye pencils, so it lasts forever.

I love Maybelline Full-N-Soft, and CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume (both non-waterproof). Drugstore mascaras are really the best! And Wet-n-Wild cream eyeliner.. I think it’s called Mega Eyes or something silly like that.

In terms of skincare: Pond’s Cold Cream (it’s my favorite for removing makeup), PanOxyl facewash for stubborn occasional acne, and finally Cetaphil cream.

I used to LOVE Maybelline’s liquid liner, best I have ever used.. But they discontinued it for their “stilleto” line (Stilleto Lash, Stilleto Liner..) and they just don’t compare. The Cetaphil moisturizing cream is amazing for me in the winter time – nothing else makes my face look so smooth and feel so comforted, and doesn’t create any breakouts. The other products from drugstores I love are from Burt’s Bees.
I remember my older sister using Wet n Wild when she was in high school… I’ve read a lot of great things about their little gems on my fav beauty blogs, but I have yet to explore their line.
Also – do the favs you mentioned have a scent? An unappealing scent can really ruin a product for me, no matter what a great bargain it may be

    I can not live without:
    * Burts Bees lip balm- I’ve been using their original version since the early ’90s.
    * Loreal Voluminous Mascara- although I’m now a big fan of their Extra Volume Collagen version.
    * Also, Goody ouchless pony tail bands.
I use these products every day and can’t imagine life without them.

I think the most underrated products at the drugstore are:

*Cover Girl Super Thick Lash mascara that comes in the red tube- Lancome Definicils drugstore dupe IMO. I have both and I can’t tell the difference.
*Cover Girl Professional mascara in the blue tube- it never smudges on me ever, it reminds me of my Fairydrops mascara in terms of being smudgeproof but less expensive and not as much curl.
*Rimmel Clean Finish Foundation, gives my skin a fresh, poreless look
*Iman lipglosses and lipsticks- the glosses are opaque metallics which is rare for the finish, usually those types of glosses just look clear with shimmer/sparkles on me but these do not. The color in the tube is the color you will get
*Rimmel lipliners- many different shades to suit just about any lip color or shade
*Hard Candy mineralized eye shadow duos
*Pixi eyeshadow singles from Target, very smooth and pigmented
    *Jordana blush
*Garnier makeup cleaning wipes in the green package- I use Tazorac gel for my acne at night and these wipes are the only ones I’ve used that do not make my skin sting, itch, or feel sticky no matter how many times I wipe my face. Retinoid users will know what I am talking about.

These are some products that I have never heard any hype over or tried and was pleasantly surprised.

I don’t usually comment on your blog, but i must mention I love your face shot today…such a pretty natural look highlighting your features. Very pretty lady!

I will definitely try out the 2 items mentioned above…I don’t know why I keep buying lip products since I never finish using any of my glosses.

Aveeno daily moisturizing lotion (SPF 15 and SPF free)
Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Fragrance Free Hand Lotion
Almay oil-free eye makeup remover pads
Almay one coat nourishing thickening mascara in black (waterproof)

The first two are the only lotions EVER that don’t make my hypersensitive skin break out in rashes and I’ve tried high-end and drugstore. Every other lotion, especially those that are scented, have broken me out in rashes, hives, the itchy scratchies or general madness.

The Almay makeup remover is something I think people complain about, but if you use it right, it gets everything comes off in two fell swoops, including waterproof mascara.

The Almay mascara I’ve used for years. It’s a more natural volume, but it doesn’t cause my fragile, yet very long, lashes to break. Plus, this stuff stays on through every form of crying you can do….aside from the panic attack version. Anything less than that, it stays on! Bonus for the watery eye me!

Palmer’s moisturizers, both the day and night cream, are great. My skin’s never looked better since I started using the Palmers face line, and people are CONSTANTLY (Like, literally every single person I tell my age to) shocked to learn that I’m 30. It also might have something to do with the fact that I drink water like it’s my job, though.
As far as makeup goes, I could not be more pleased with Face of Australia’s liquid eyeliner. It’s super black, stays put and has a really easy-to-use brush applicator that makes it a snap to do super fine lines or thick ones. I never used to use liquid eyeliner but now I use this one all the time, I love it!

Right now I’m obsessed with Almay’s Liquid EyeLiner Pen (it looks sort of nondescript, like a random marker!) and Revlon’s Colorburst Lip Butter in Lollipop. The eyeliner pen is a great, easy to use liquid eyeliner that’s perfect for liquid eyeliner beginners like me. The lipstick is a great shade of hot pink but because it’s a bit sheer, it’s not too overwhelming.

my favorites that I can’t help but go back to:
Carmex lip balm (orig. version) — nothing cured my dry, chapped lips other than this <3
    Maybelline lipsticks (the Asian version)
Prestige waterproof eyeliners (comparable to my friend's MUFE AquaEyes :D)
L'Oreal HIP mascara (the volume it gives is AWESOME)
    E.L.F eyeshadow quads
    🙂

    Seriously, I can’t pick one.

May be Rimmel’s 8 hour mousse eyeshadows? Similar to MAC Big Bounce but much much better. It lays down color in 1 swipe and if you sheer it out,and add another layer, the first layer won’t disappear. And I don’t need to use primer. I read raves about these products in some British blogs, indeed very underrated. Then I was curious, so I picked up a couple in a bargain store like TJ Maxx US equivalent. At that time, I didn’t have access to MAC store, yes, my village doesn’t have a MAC store! Then I went to the CCO and saw some Big Bounce. Curious and so smitten by some of the colours, I picked up 2 and yes, disappointing, unless I layer it over UDPP.

    Will compare them soon.

I use a mixture of Sephora and drugstore (Target, CVS, Walmart) products. Best and most underrated drugstore buys:

*Aveeno Positively Radiant SPF 15 moisturizer – doesn’t break me out and helps clear up acne spots.

*Milani eyeshadows – when used with the Urban Decay eyeshadow primer, they will last all day and not crease. I use the Runway eyeshadows, and shadows from their single eyeshadow collections.

*Physicians Formula Pearl Powder Highlighter/Bronzer – brightens my face with or without foundation. Can use with zit/eye concealer and blends very well.

*Hard Candy Cream Shadows – just bought these at Walmart the other day and when used with my primer, last all day without creasing (without the primer, ANY shadow on me can crease, expensive or cheap).

*L’Oreal, Maybelline, and Cover Girl mascaras – have not noticed smudging, flaking, or clumping with any of the ones I use.

*L’Oreal Carbon Black eye liner – similar to Urban Decay 24/7 but cheaper (around 6 bucks) and lines water lines better than most drugstore eyeliners I have tried.

*Sally Hansen Nail Care Line – any polish has done well and not chipped easily, and I have used the nail products to strengthen my brittle runner’s toes.

WnW eyeshadows, Revlon lipstick and colorstayr liquid eyeliner, Physicians Formula talc free mineral wear face powder compacts (medium coverage that is a godsend for my hyper oily skin) and Sally Hansen nail polish keep me happy and my helmer full. And whoever mentioned Goody products is spot on – I live in ouchless hair ties and spin pins.

    – The L’Oreal HIP powder kohls…so much so that almost all the stores I visit discontinued carrying them (or all shades but black and brown) earlier this year. Great for the waterline/tightline, ridiculous staying power, and the teal/gold/burgundy colors are so striking.

    – Maybelline XXL Extensions. I hardly see anyone talk about this one, and it’s pretty much the only reason I wear mascara. I’m blessed with thick, curled lashes to go with my hair, and this mascara makes me look like I stuck on falsies.

    – Jordana lipshines – Two bucks, delicious smells, a nice hint of color, and a great moisturizing feeling like those Revlon lip butters.

    – Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation in MY shade. 🙁 The foundation itself seems to sell well, and Maybelline’s website claims they still make my shade (Natural Ivory, Light 3), but all the stores I visit have removed the product and label from their display, so I ordered a couple of backups.

I love L’Oreal’s HIP jelly balms. They’re a great way for me to try on a little bit of a brighter lip color without going crazy. I have a bright pink one and a tangerine orange one and they’re sheer, so it’s great for someone like me who doesn’t like taking huge risks! I also love Aveeno’s Daily Radiance pads. One side is smooth and the other has bumps for exfoliating. The smell is great too!
