I wish I could say that it’s normal and perfect, and I never have breakouts or itchy redness, ever, but alas…that’s not the case. If you can say that, though, congrats. You’re a unicorn!
I’ve got combo skin. It’s dry on my cheeks and around my nose and mouth, and you know what? It gets REALLY bad on windy days. Consequently, I freakin’ hate windy days, which happen all the dang time here in Novato. The wind is like a hydration-sucking vampire, and its bite makes my cheeks hurt like hell.
It’s also dry under my eyes and on my lids.
Now, my forehead, on the other paw, is oily, especially the area between my eyebrows, and also on my nose and my chin.
But that’s not all! My skin also likes to break out, so I use benzoyl peroxide daily.
So, yeah… That’s my skin type, for now. I’m sure it’ll change one of these years, and the oily areas will probably trade places with the dry areas, LOL!
How about you? What’s your skin type?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

My skin has always been dry since as long as I can remember. However, I am 58 and post-menopausal and my skin feels like a crocodile most of the time. I know that I should be following an intense skincare regiment, but I don’t have the $ for it. I just use a good hydrating moisturizer and serum for my face and lotion for my hands. I also have some brown spots from sun damage which I haven’t dealt with. Not much else going on.
Be well.

Hi Jane,
I think there are ways to get some good skin care in without having to splash out big $. Check out Neutrogena’s retinol products. They’re pretty affordable and have a good amount of kick.

I completely agree to Karen. You take the best what you can find and not always it must be something extremely pricey.
I’d suggest besides moisturizer to use some self-made masks from the products you have in the fridge to ensure that skin gets everything. It sounds like “meh… that’s nothing new” but sometimes the effect is instant. My skin is combo, thus won’t be able to provide anything for dry skin, but I personally love scrub from coffe grounds as well as pink clay mixed with lemon and honey as facial mask.

Combination. Pretty oily through the t-zone, normal on the rest of my face and acne-prone especially on chin, jaw line and cheeks. With a tendency to hyper pigmentation.
Oh, and aging, of course.
Karen says
I have combination skin, too!
Rachel says
My skin is pretty dry right now due to cold weather/wind outside, and the heat blasting inside. (I live in North Dakota.) But by the end of the day I am oily in my T-zone. I use a thick moisturizer at night and sometimes face oil on top of that. If I know I’m going to take a shower in the evening and I’m just sitting around after work, I’ll slather Vaseline on my face as a hydrating mask. My cheeks are also pretty red, especially when I drink wine, so I think I have undiagnosed rosacea, but I hate going to the doctor.
Karen says
Hi Rachel,
The heater is killer on my dry skin too. 🙁 I’ve never tried Vaseline as a face mask, although I’ve heard that for some people it’s the stuff. I’m always afraid it’s going to break me out. How long have you been doing it?
Rachel says
I only do it if I know I’m gonna wash my face soon, doesn’t seem to break me out. I started it about a month ago.

Mine is dry, and sensitive. Lately I’ve been on hunt for anti-aging skincare that doesn’t have any AHA’s or other acids, and no retinols which seems to be like trying to find a unicorn lol. Those ingredients break me out in a nasty rash. ?
I’d love to try Lancome’s Genefique Sensitive, it seems perfect – but it’s just too pricey. I found an Olay one which will do for now. And when in doubt I just use a hyluronic acid to jam in the moisture.

Luckily as I’ve gotten older, my skin has remained fairly normal. I get some overall shine during the day so I keep blotting paper handy. I dealt with acne a lot as a teenager, but luckily I just get minor breakouts these days.
breyerchic04 says
I’m normal on oil not really dry but certainly not oily, but my skin is incredibly dehydrated. It’s also reactive, not actually acneic but you use a product it doesn’t like, and I get breakouts on my chin and cheeks. Mineral Oil and Rosehip Oil are high on that list, niacinimide can do it too.

Combo over here. And over the last 1-2 years it’s been drying out. I used to get shiny over the whole face during the day, and now there’s still some of that going on in the T zone, but way, way less than before. Esp now in the colder months, the cheeks and forehead have gotten dry enough that I usually feel like slathering on some cream at work around noon… And yep. Still get some comedos, but that’s been improving quite a lot with an orchestrated attack involving Differin gel, frequent exfoliation, being super careful with skin care, and using very light face make-up…

Super sensitive and a tendency to dryness in the cheeks. I occasionally break out around my chin and mouth from hormones or stress.
Thank you for your sweet comments on Thanksgiving Day. I haven’t had a chance to thank you yet. It’s been a tough few days and your comments really meant a lot to me.

When I was a teenager I had an oily forehead and breakouts.
That progressed to an oily T zone and Rodasia (sp ).
Now at age 68 almost 69 I have very dry skin !
Very hard to treat ! I have at least 20 different facial cleansers that range from Clinique three step system to an ELF cleanser which I like very much !
My nightime routine includes Clarins oil and No 7 night cream on my neck !
I can deal with the dryness but the neck is an issue !
Trying to stay young costs bucks ??⚖️

I used to have combination skin, but now it’s pretty “normal.” I had pimples from time to time until I started using Paula’s Choice 2% BHA liquid (I am not affiliated with PC in any way). You might want to try that instead of the benzoyl peroxide. I used to use benzoyl peroxide, but it hurt when applied to my skin, bleached any fabric it touched, and really didn’t seem to help me. (If you are allergic to aspirin, don’t bother with any BHA products as they are chemically very close to aspirin.)

When I was much younger, my skin was so oily I could give Standard Oil serious competition! Now that I am well into my seventies, my skin is bone dry. Because I’ve always taken meticulous care of my skin, it is smooth, fairly even in tone, and I still have a good support layer of collagen to hold everything up. LOL. Good genes, good skin care, and a happy and healthful lifestyle are the keys to keeping my complexion looking good. I have some basic products that Inuse consistently, but I also have some products for special needs that crop up f on time to time. Everything is designed to keep my mild rosacea under control and my über dry skin looking moist and more youthful. BTW, everything I use on my face, I also use on my neck and chest. So many women forget that the neck and chest age, too.

According to the Bauman skin type, I’m OSPW (Oily, Sensitive, Pigmented and Wrinkled). I definitely found that Bauman’s skin type quiz describes my skin most accurately.

Very sensitive / delicate and prone to dehydration, redness, irritation, and breakouts (primarily fungal-based acne). I have a routine that seems to be working for me right now.
Karen says
I remember you mentioning that you were paring down your routine. How many steps are you doing now?
Chelsea says
1. Remove makeup with Bioderma Sensibio(PM only)
2. Cleanse with either Vanicream Facial Cleanser or Vanicream Z Bar
3. Toner on cotton pad, That’s alcohol free cucumber watch hazel toner
4. Neutrogena light therapy mask (PM only, most days)
5. Some sort of serum, I rotate between weak vitamin c and a weak retinol, sometimes hyaluronic acid
6. Moisturizer
7. Sunscreen (AM only)
It still looks like lot ?
Karen says
To me that looks totally doable! 🙂 My max is 10 steps. Anything more than that I’m ready to take a nap.
