Ever since Hard Candy Sky in the ’90s, I’ve been a blue nail polish girl.
Actually, now I’m a greenish blue/blueish green/blue/green nail polish girl. Those are definitely the color families I wear the most.
Oh, and purple. I’ll sprinkle a purple up in there from time to time. So blues, greens and purples are the shades I wear the most, and to get even more rambly on ya, I hardly ever wear orange nail polish. It doesn’t really do anything for me at all. Neither does beige nor tan.
How about you? What nail polish colors do you wear the most? (BONUS: And what do you hardly ever wear?)
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

It’s so seasonal for me. But baby blue rarely is one of my go tos. Neither are nudes.
Fall: dark blue, burgundy, dark teal, dark purple (Lincoln Park after dark foreva)
Winter: glitter shades, and bright berries and darks
Spring: light gray, light purple, light teal
Summer: coral and pink and neons!
Kristen says
I’m a seasonal nail polish wearer too!
Rachel says
If my nails are really long I like nudes and neutrals. If they are trimmed short I like darker burgundy’s and plums, or bright colors if it’s summer! I hardly every wear yellows. I love how chic light pinks and whites (Kim Kardashian nails) look but it always looks sloppy on my nails.
Karen says
I think opaque white nails can look very cool (especially with short nails) but yeah, it’s hard to find shades that aren’t streaky. A good base coat always helps!
TheGirlWithThePen says
Always dark nail colours and I love a metallic/glitter one. I never really go for greens, they always seem to stain my nails. Any tips?
Ditte K. says
I’m also into the mint candy apple shades – so much so that when I took a picture of 6 different mint shades, my boyfriend asked why I had six of the same colour 🙂
Karen says
I swear I could have 20 different red lipsticks in front of El Hub and he’d think they were all the same, LOL!
Nicole says
Almost always – black, hot pink, or bright red (love OPI black onyx, it’s on my nails right now)
Often – burgundy or dark purple (I second Lincoln Park After Dark and I love Midnight in Moscow)
Almost never – green or blue (but I really like OPI Russian Navy, and this year’s China Glaze Halloween collection has an awesome blackened gold green called Wicked Liquid that is a fabulous Fall shade)
Never – pastels
Karen says
Lincoln Park After Dark is a classic!
Amber says
Grey — I have every shade and then some. In fact, I thought I had a grey problem until I saw your stash of blues! 😀
Karen says
I know, I might be a little addicted, LOL!
Heather says
I definitely wear neons more in the warm weather, but my favorite year-round shades are anything multichromatic, holographic, and with sparkle! The more complex, the better. 🙂
What puzzles me is that I LOVE earth-toned eyeshadow, but I pretty much never wear that type of shade on my nails. I just don’t like how they look on my hands. I also rarely wear oranges or yellows.
Karen says
Hi Heather,
I’m the same way about earth tones. I rarely wear browns on my nails, but love them for my eyes!
Lorraine says
I am a terrible nail polish hoarder so I have every color under the sun well represented! The color I wear the least lately is purples/berries- they used to be my fave, you can tell by my well loved bottle of Essie Bahama Mama. Color I wear most is beige/pink neutrals. Reason for this is that I will alternate between something dark or bright, then have a palate cleansing week where I do nude nails. I have a vast collection of nude and neutral shades that get a lot of use! Some faves-Dior Incognito, Smith and Cult The Graduate, Chanel Lovely Beige. On my toes I never wear nudes. Pedi color is usually something red, but metallics, blues, orange or hot pink is common. Green is the color I ever, never wear on my toes.
Karen says
I hardly wear nudes on my toes, ever! I have long toes and when I wear pale colors my toes look more like stubby fingers, ha ha!
Lorraine says
I see a lot of beachy nudes and french pedis looking good on other people but I could not pull it off. The reason I steer clear of green toes is because I was once really grossed out by a faded, chipped watermelon nail art pedi. My eyes were fooled into thinking it was a nasty untreated foot fungus. ewww! I wish I could unsee that.
Stephanie Smith says
I’m usually in blue, black, or rose gold polish. Preferably holographic because holo is life! I hardly ever wear red or nudes, I like color on my nails and toes.
Karen says
I haven’t worn holo in a minute! I did go through a spell though a few years back.
Hope you’re having a good week so far.
Ruchita says
I always go for bright colors – like red, pink and sometimes orange.
P.S. I bought the Trader Joe’s Grapefruit Ginger Sugar Scrub. I’ve used it a couple of times so far and it’s great! Thanks for the recommendation.
Karen says
Yay, so glad you like it! I wanna go back today to get another tube. 🙂
Tatiana says
I hardly wear polish these days because my nails peel so easily and nail polish just seems to make it worse. But when I do wear color, I like golds and bronzes and really dark vampy colors like Rouge Noir and blacks with holo and shimmer.
Karen says
You should look into Dermalect. They’re a line made specifically for damaged nails (you can find them at Ulta). I used one of their polishes recently and was really impressed! I know they have treatments, too, which you might find helpful.
Emily says
WHOOOO this speaks to me. I actually just went through and created swatch sticks of all of my polishes and then used them to help get rid of a few polishes (dupes or never used them). I only have Essie polishes.
——
Turns out I use primarily sheer nudes (think Ballet Slippers and Fairy Tailor) and dusty-rosy nudes (think Clothing Optional, Angora Cardi). As well as deep-dark purple-y maroons (think Amethyst Noir, Model Clicks).
Other than that, I don’t wear them. I destashed a lot of blues (kept a few deep dark ones), corals, and pinks. Good riddance! haha
Karen says
I know Ballet Slippers is wildly popular but I think I may have only worn it once, waaaay back in the day. I love nudes but prefer opaque shades, go figure.
Do you like the Gel Coutures? I love them!
Emily says
Ballet Slippers is pretty classic. It’s definitely the nail polish equivalent of a My Lips But Better lipstick (for me anyway). Fun fact — it’s the Queen of England’s favourite nail polish!
And YES!!! The gel coutures are AMAZING. I’ve mostly switched over to those completely but the gel couture top coat is great over their regular polishes too. They’re also starting to put the wide brush into the regular polishes!
Karen says
I read about that somewhere! I also read that Royal Family members can’t wear crazy nail polish colors too. Now that would break my heart!
Michele DiCola says
I probably have every Essie she ever made . I know . Hoarder .
But , I only get French Dip powder .
I might do berry for the holidays . Nov – to Jan .
Debbie says
Please don’t nail shame me, but I almost 100% exclusively wear a CND color called Midnight Swim (I think) on both fingers and toes. It’s a very dark navy with a teeny bit of sparkle if you look closely and goes with everything. My nail technician is soooo tired of asking me to change she’s actually retiring soon which is very annoying and upsetting as now I need to find another one as good, which is a tall order. She’s also lovely.
When I rarely feel the need for a change, my hands/feet just don’t look right (to me). I used to buy practically every new Chanel shade, especially the dark ones, but they just end up unused and go off. *Note to self* to clean our polish cupboard…
Debbie says
Ooops, clean out, not our…
Lorraine says
oooh Debbie, there are online collector groups that might be interested your old Chanel polishes! I have some really vintage ones, and only a couple of bottles have ever “died” on me. I can’t bear to toss them, though! I once read that Seche Restore thinner works well on the old Chanels, but I haven’t tried it yet. There are some vintage beauties in the Chanel archives, for sure!!! Those seductive dark shimmers that were their signature- like Nuit de Russie, Very Vamp, Matador… le sigh!
Lee T says
Beautiful dark blue Essie Dive Bar has been my go to pedi for years. I range anywhere from nudes to holographics, to dark greys and berries on my hands.
LindaLibraLoca says
Reds of any kind.
Agatha Forest says
I wear nudes and have a LOT of them from Chanel, and am just starting to collect some of the Burberry ones as well. I also wear only clear base/top coats on my nails when I don’t want to wear any color.
Karen says
Chanel makes some pretty ones! They do beige and pale pink well.
BrooklynShoeBabe says
It’s hard to say. Ever since the invention of Chanel’s Vamp polish, I’ve developed a collection of dark colors–dark red, dark pink, dark and metallic greens and blues. However, I am also a neon girl–bright neon pinks, oranges, mints, greens, and yellows. I suppose I am navy and green fan but it has to be shiny. No matte for me.
Rachel Runyan says
I love anything glittery, shimmery, opalescent, metallic, or duochrome. I’m big on fuchsias, magentas, reds, burgundies, purples, bright blues, teals, greens, and blacks.
I don’t ever wear traditional French manicures, nudes, beiges, tans, whites, or browns. I rarely wear pastels.
Maricar says
Hi Karen,
I have similar tastes to you! I switch off and on between deep blues and cobalt (I have a Zoya blue that I hope never gets discontinued) and magenta-purple tones (I’m currently wearing a Deborah Lippman polish that I got on vacation and it brings me back to that trip every time i apply it). Frankly I wear clear on my hands most of the time. For my lifestyle, hands stay clear and toes get color!
