What Cheers You Up When You’re Feeling Blue?

September 1st, 2009 by Karen 77 Comments

dulce-de-leche-1

Heya, chicas. Hope your day’s been a good one so far.

Things are much better on this end. A pint of Haagen-Daz Dulce de Leche fro-yo, a long bath and some Sex and the City episodes from season deux (remember when Carrie dates the new Yankee?!) helped lift me out of my funk. 🙂

Earlier while I was chillin’ in the tub, I got to thinking about the different things that comfort us when we’re feeling out of sorts. For me, most of the time a relaxing activity, like watching a movie, helps a lot, but I also have those moments when a long run or walk does the trick.

What cheers you up when you’re feeling down? Please share a few of your favorites in the comments.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

      Hi Luciole,

Have you ever been to the California Adventure park that’s next to Disneyland in SoCal? They have this awesome show called MuppetVision 3D. I saw it a few years ago and it was like my childhood dream come true.

Oh, and Grand Theft Auto is one of my BFF’s favorite games! I’ve never played it before, but something tells me I’d be terrible at it. I’m one of those drivers who is happy to chug along in the slow lane.

    Hey Karen,

Music always saves me when I’m feeling blue. It just does something to my soul, whether it’s beyonce, john mayer, or kanye west. I can’t stay down for long when I have my music and that’s why I travel with my ipod 24/7 (along with my lip gloss, girl). 🙂

      Hi Shontay,

Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could find a way to combine the iPod with a lipstick/lipgloss holder? You’d never have to be without the essentials.

LOL, a billion years ago I saw John Mayer live in SF. He winked and smiled while he was playing on stage (my friend Roz can attest to this). I was giddy for days.

How was your Tuesday? Anything exciting happen?

    Hi Karen,
I’m curious, which tiny club did you see JM at? I saw him years ago at a small club in SF and could almost reach out at touch him. One of my friends at the time was good friends with one of his backup musicians at the time, which was pretty cool. I remember that later that year or the next year he opened for Norah Jones in SF and I was SO angry that I missed that show!
As far as things that always make me feel better . . . I love walking through the drugstore at the Marketplace, then going to Panda Express and getting an order of Orange Chicken, and finally returning home to either watch retuns of The Simpsons, Futurama, or Bones OR a movie. If my boyfriend is involved, that makes it just THAT MUCH BETTER 🙂
Oh, and I make sure to give my dog a lot of scratches, so I get the “I adore you” look from him.

GIRRRL — was that the show where John kept sipping on a cup of tea throughout the entire set? I think KFOG sponsored it. If you were there, then I was there too!

Oh, too bad you missed the Norah Jones/John Mayer show at the Fillmore. It was really good! She opened for him, if my foggy memory serves me right.

BTW, your cheering up ritual sounds lovely. Now I want some orange chicken.

If Zena is unavailable (which is never), a good book or an old Disney cartoon movie (Aristocats, 101 Dalmatians, etc. it all works for me).

    Karen,
That’s crazy 🙂 I am pretty sure that was the same show I went to! I don’t remember the tea, because the thing that struck me the most was how focused he was during solos (to me he looked a bit constipated). I loved how much energy he put into playing for us, you could tell that it was truly the only thing in his world at that moment.
You’re right about that Norah Jones/JM show . . . I’m still mad (this many years later) that I missed it!
I’ve seen her a couple of times, before she got huge too, once at a winery in Mountain View and later at the open-air amphitheater in Berkeley. Both awesome shows.
I am honored to share my comfort with you 🙂

You are so lucky to have seen those Norah Jones shows. I bet the open-air theater show in Berkeley was awesome. I think she has a very soothing voice, and I love her lyrics. 🙂

I suffer from depression, so I’ve tried to find lots of ways to keep myself from feeling bad. Wearing amazing nail polish colors can really help.. the ones that just make you feel good when you look at the color. Getting some love from my kitty never fails to make me smile and when she acts silly, I LOL & feel better. Comfort foods, like ice cream, fruity Jell-o with Cool Whip, & and yummy mashed potatoes never almost never fail at making me feel better (but not eaten all at once 😉 ). Lastly, watching funny stuff on-line, like YouTube or Angry Alien.com’s 30 second movies made by bunnies, and happy, peppy music make me want to move and laugh and get up off my mopey butt.

Oh, and cool beauty blogs are good too. 😛

    What cheers me up:

putting on my headphones and blasting my fave tunes. I dance around my apt like a crazy person and don’t care. Shake shake shake…shake your bootay!

    SATC always cheers me up

Calling my cousin in Mexico. She and I are pretty close and she makes me laugh.

Sometimes taking a nap cheers me up. After I wake up, I feel refreshed.

    Hope you are feeling better.

My Wednesday was great. Two more days til a 3 day weekend. Not looking forward to tomorrow as I have a dentist appointment (you know how much I looooove those)!

When Boom Boom Pow first came out, I was blasting it and remembering my ravin’ days. hahaha

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
