List the things that are preventing you from standing in your front yard and screaming up into the sky for hours on end while sheltering-in-place!
My sanity savers, in no particular order:
- Painting my nails (I’m all about #MismatchedMani life right now)
- Honestly… Carbs. I was eating “lower carb-ish” before the pandemic hit but now I just don’t have the bandwidth for it. Give me all the carbs, please.
- Speaking of carbs, baking ALL THE THINGS, especially cookies. Funny thing is I bake more now than I did when I worked at a bakery, ha!
- Cocooning myself into stretchy pants 24/7! My body repels jeans now.
- A schedule during the weekdays.
- Working out first thing in the morning.
- Hanging out with Pretty Girl Rosie, the Torbiest Torbie of the Torbie Girls.
- Predictably cheesy rom-coms like Bridget Jones’ Diary, and historical period pieces
- Lists upon lists upon lists.
How about you?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I bet if you WERE to stand in your yard and scream up into the sky for hours on end, others would be relieved to see that someone is acting on a very real impulse and they may just join you.
BUT — to answer your question:
. Yoga first thang in the morning! Dropping into a backbend and standing up from backbends at the end of practice makes me feel like I can handle anything.
. Very sadly: not talking to my family, who have very different ideas about [not] sheltering or distancing. It’s too much like witnessing a very precarious tight-rope walk. Just….cannot. :’-(
. All the YouTube makeup videos! I’m really loving Robert Welsh, Pretty Over Fifty, Zabrena, and KinkySweat rn.
. Chunk the Groundhog YouTube channel! I have lunch with Chunk, Nibbles, and now their child, everyday at lunch. It’s pretty much just them, loudly chomping on vegetables in some dude’s yard. Multiple camera angles, near-ASMR sound, it’s a very soothing experience.
. Terrible movies, like “Red Riding Hood.” I’m usually a stickler for quality films and TV shows but my brain is not picky right now!
Hang in there, sis!!
Karen says
You hang in there too! BTW I’ve been watching Lifetime movies and loving them! They’re perfect for when I want my brain to go mushy.
Efrain says
I think we all really need to scream right now, but until it becomes socially acceptable these things are keeping me sane:
– Food TV Programs: Netflix has enough programs and documentaries to keep me entertained and calmed; there is something soothing about watching others cooking.
-Trying to have a routine: I say trying because I really struggle with it.
-Avoiding caffeine: I’ve been drinking coffee and tea without caring and I’m realizing I wasn’t as crazy as in the last two days, so I need to stop.
-Talking to friends.
-Exercising in the morning.
-Cooking and baking.
– Brad Mondo’s videos.
-Tiktok because I need silly humor.
-Simple dramas like Virgin River.
Sending you a hug, I’ll try to sleep.
Karen says
Exercising in the morning makes a huge difference. I have so much energy for the rest of my day! What type of workouts have you been doing?
Efrain says
Indeed exercising in the morning has been giving me an energy boost. I’m doing with my sister and my mom a training program from a Spanish trainer.
The program is for at least three months, so let’s see the results we get in August. It includes full body weight training, core training and HIIT; also we’re doing some zumba choreographs after.

Speaking of historical period pieces, did you hear that PBS is having a Downton Abbey marathon beginning Friday night at 9 pm? That sounds like quite a weekend.
Things that are keeping me sane right now include:
~ regularly texting with friends.
~ my online book club.
~ projects around the house.
~ the Makeup and Beauty Blog!
~ reruns of favorite older shows. (Hulu is a goldmine for this.)
~ podcasts. (If you don’t know The Popcast, you are missing out.)
~ lists. Amen. My brain is in shards.
Karen says
I hope that they cap off the marathon with the movie, because that would be the ultimate in Downton Abbey-ness.
The season when poor Lavinia gets the Spanish Flu has new meaning for me now.
Suzanne C says
I hadn’t even thought of that!!! Oh gracious, that will be difficult to watch.
Karen says
I recently re-watched the entire series (just a few months back) to prep for the movie so it’s all pretty fresh. Have you seen the movie yet? (I’m sorry if I’ve asked you that already. I swear my memory is getting spottier these days.)
Suzanne C says
Not yet. We re-watched the series, too, thinking we were going to see the movie when it was at the theater, but the timing didn’t work out for us to go.
Karen says
I ended up renting it online, because I’m now the person who falls asleep in movie theaters (it’s dark, nobody’s bothering me, so slumber is the next logical step).
Anyway, it was really good! I think you’ll enjoy it.

Things that are keeping me from murdering Dear Husband (just kidding) while sheltering in place are…
Emptying the dishwasher first thing in the morning. Only because it usually has my coffee measuring spoon in it. Then.
Coffee first thing in the morning.
Then either working out or taking a long walk.
Reading.
Korean rom-coms or action movies.
Cocktails. I’m working on my mixology.
Met my trainer in the park today and she was wearing a new polish color. From what I could tell from over 6 ft. away, it was a mid-tone, grayed out, cool, mauvy purple. She said it was one of the new quick dry Essies. She offered to pick up a bottle for me since she needed to go out and get some other stuff. I thanked her profusely but declined. I’m pretty sure if I got another bottle of polish Dear Husband would have a fit.
I want to be baking. The shelves in the grocery store now have flour and sugar and some yeast. But I’m gaining so much weight as it is, I need to go back to eating salads and slaws. Sigh.
Karen says
Your trainer sounds cool! How often do you get to see her? I’m glad you guys have developed a friendship.
Tatiana says
We rendezvous in the park three times a week. She sits about half way across the field and tells me what to do. She’s amazingly good at telling me to move my knee in or our or my toes in or out, or squeeze my abs more to get me to adjust my position. Or to do my pushups much slower. Ugh. A slow pushup is so much harder to do. And we’ll text each other when we find T-paper or paper towel or tofu in the store and ask if we should get some for each other. Before this virus thing we used to drive to Ranch 99 or Najiya or Mitsuwa or Kukje markets and go grocery shopping together. She really is a very thoughtful person and I’m lucky to have met her.
The only thing that bugs me about her is when she complains she’s gained five pounds and I can’t tell where and in the same breath tells me she just bought petite XXS clothes from Athleta.

Baking, walks with Hettie, naps, playing Tetris, reading. Right now Hettie and I are snuggled up in bed, with Zack and Jiji, that helps too.
Karen says
TETRIS! My favorite!
Have you made anything good lately? I have lemon bars on my “to do” list. 🙂
Chelsea says
I made a really good banana pudding this weekend with homemade vanilla wafers! Also not baking but I made buckwheat crêpes using a recipe from my host mom back in France. You fill them with eggs, cheese, and ham (if you want) for a traditional Galette Bretonne. SO GOOD.
