“Wait — but who’s bringing the folding chairs?!”

Gah!

Holiday stress. Yep, it’s that time of year. It’s hard enough trying to balance your regular workload while attending to your feline/canine/human teenage, infant or adolescent overlord’s needs, but then you throw Thanksgiving preparations on top of that, and stress levels go ballistic!

What’s a guy or girl to do?

Well, there’s herbal tea… 🙂

But tea is only marginally helpful.

In my case, I also turn to TV, chocolate and makeup, preferably all at the same time, LOL!

Welcome to another weekend, friend. I hope you’re hanging in there. Tabs, El Hub and I are doing our best.

Oh, I ended up liking that movie I watched last night, Your Sister’s Sister. I can’t believe the main dude in it is Mark Duplass from The League (it also stars Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt). I thought it was a little emotionally twisted, but not too bad. I liked it (although I wanted more from the ending).

In other news, it’s Sephora eGift card giveaway time! — and it only takes a comment to enter (full details down below).

Good luck! And may the fierce force be with you. 🙂

What folks are saying…

“Shut the front door! OMG Karen, you have made my day. 🙂 I’m sick in bed with the flu and this has just cheered me up immensely!!!!!!!! BTW, I’m the one that sent you that pic of my pug in a wig a few weeks back LOL! Thanks again, honestly, I’m beyond giddy right now.”
-Angel

“What a lovely surprise it was to see your announcement (after completing one of many exams/papers/projects I have this crazy week)! The eCard will definitely ease expenses for this broke, beauty-obsessed college student. Thank you, Karen and Tabs!!”
-Katie

“Thanks so much, Karen. Just in case you were wondering what I got with it, I decided to go with the Clarisonic Mia–I’ve been wanting it for years now, but have never purchased it because of the price. Your eCard helped me finally buy it! I look forward to using it. Thanks again!”
-Jane

“Thank you SO much Karen! OMG! Wishes really do come true! I can’t believe I won! You have no idea how much this will help me through the holidays. I’ve been an avid fan of your blog for the past two years. Your witty and creative entries, informative makeup information, and beautiful photos have kept me hooked. I look forward to more of it. Goodness, you’ve
seriously just made my week and it’s only Tuesday night! :)”
-Zharlynne

“Oh my goodness! Thank you so much Karen (and Tabs, of course)! I really appreciate this! I’d been eyeing the Anastasia brow pencil in Strawburn to match my red hair!”
-Chelsea (and Jiji the kitten and Quincy the bunny)

“Hi Karen. Thank you so much, I’m so excited, I’ve never won anything before. My name is Hana … I just turned 25 (today is my birthday!) Yay! Thank you.”
-Hana

The makeup brush I use most often is definitely a flat-top synthetic kabuki I got from Meow Cosmetics–it’s super soft, and great for applying finishing powder, powder foundation, or just blending out blush. Plus, Meow has sales all the time, so you can get it for about $20. I like it better than my Mac 182!

Your blog is one of the few the feature Paul & Joe products. Perhaps because they have such cute whimsical packaging, especially when they have the cat designs, not to mention their products smell divine and are high quality as well. I even bought the Paul & Joe blusher stick (cat with the top cat) in Minou after reading your post. Love their products!

Also you’re one of the first to blog about the Le Volume de Chanel mascara which I have been dying to try. Yves Saint Laurent Faux Cils (waterproof, regular version gives me severe raccoon eyes) and Lancome Hypnose drama (though a little clumpier) are my fav and you say Le Volume de Chanel is better than those?! My most used brush is my eco tools angled eyeliner brush. I like that it is stiff enough and it comes to a precise point. I like to use it on my eyebrows with my tarte brow mousse. My second fav for the same job is the angled eyeliner brush from essence! I was really surprised by how well it works.

I want to answer them all, because I love reading other people’s opinions!

What makeup brush do you use most often? Crown Brush Pro Precision Pointed Powder – only $16, but so big and fluffy, perfect for dusting on loose or pressed powder, highlighter, bronzer, blush, anything!
Most underrated makeup or beauty brand? I’m just now getting into Guerlain, and they do so many things so well
Who’s your favorite actress on TV? Kerry Washington on Scandal, hands down
Has it started snowing where you live? One last week, during the Nor’easter
Do you prefer to shave, wax or pluck? Shave legs, wax bikini area, pluck eyebrows
If you could change your eye color (and wanted to), what color would you choose? Green, because it’s mysterious and different!

The makeup brush I use most often is definitely the RealTechniques Buffing Brush. I know it gets talked about a lot, but for good reason. It is absolutely the best for buffing in liquid foundations, tinted moisturizers, and BB creams. Leaves a natural finish and so easy to clean!

Their easy to clean and uber cheap, only $6.99! The brush I use most often is the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush. It used to be my Sigma F80 but the size of the RT brush is so much better at getting foundation into the harder to reach areas, like around the nose and under the eyes, and it’s super soft and dense. I tried going back to the F80 but now it feels so huge and unwieldy in comparison.

Hmmm… my favorite makeup product would have to be my MAC concealer. On days where my skin isn’t looking to great, I could just conceal problem areas and under eye circles and my face looks flawless as if I’m wearing full coverage foundation. I just set with MAC’s blotting powder and a little mascara and I’m good to goo!

I think the eco tools buffing brush is my best all round brush followed by real techniques expert face brush. I’ll ise either on consecutive products on face: primer throrgh foundation/ powder/ bronzer/ blush.

Tbh, I prefer tweezing over waxing or threading any day. I use tweezerman’s tweezers and I feel it gives better control and is less irritating to the skin while removing fine and coarse hairs under my arch. I’ve been wearing a bold yet well groomed brow look sinxe summer

How’s it? So I went through surgical menopause recently, throwing me under the hot flash bus 20 years too early. So I have to deal with serious IronMan Triathalon type sweating at any given moment. Needless to say, my Look suffered. So after much trial & serious fail-age, my faves are straight out of the drugstore. Loreal Infallable 24 hour eyeshadow & Maybelline Color Tattoo eyeshadow have killed the competition hands down. They stay on thru hot flash sweating, swimming, tears, & rain. Some of those simultaneously. For all other non waterproof makeup I use Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray. Prob way much more than anyone wanted to know, right right?

you know, this year is so funny because on our forecast for this week…nothing but highs of 70s and lows of mid 50’s. it won’t be bad at all. can’t say i’m not happy though, it’s awesome that i won’t have to be freezing at night and relying on tons of blankies and my heater. 🙂

The makeup brush do you use most often MAC 217 and 219. Most underrated makeup or beauty brand I think is E.L.F cosmetics. My favorite actress on TV is Meg Steedle that just died on Board Walk Empire. I live near Boston yes it started snowing here. I prefer to wax stays smother for longer. If I could change my eye color it would be grey the color looks hot on me!

There are two brushes I use Every. Single. Day. no matter what else may be going on with my makeup. I have a Sonia Kashup flat top multipurpose brush that I use to apply powder foundation (either Bobbi Brown mineral or Laura Geller balance & brighten depending how much coverage I need that day) and I have a MAC 217 that I use solely for blending out concealer under my eyes. Nothing else does the job quite as perfectly.

I got colored contacts for a costume I was sporting at a Comic Con. Most people didn’t notice because my normal eyes are brown, and the colored contacts were a greenish color. If I could change them, I probably would change them to green! It was only people out and about that would give me strange looks? Maybe it was the lighting out in the real world that made it more obvious haha!

Ive just recently began an addiction to all things beauty(after my 1st trip tp sephora) and your site always came up in my searches while looking for reviews and tutorials on some of my most recent beauty buys. I’ve always loved makeup but didn’t buy a lot because there’s only so much you can do with browns, taupes and neutrals, which is all that I had worn for 25 years (I was a teen in the 80’s and never caught onto the blue trends then). So now I’m looking for ways to wear color-hopefully I’m not too old for that.
But anyway LOVE your site-very helpful reviews, tips etc. plus I like your conversational way of posting!

I have dark brown eyes, and I wouldn’t trade them for the world. When I’m tan I can wear gold shadows to make them exotic looking and during the winter I can get away with deep dark colors against my paler skin. It’s fun to fantasize about different eye colors, but I really do love my big brown eyes.

It has already snowed once here in NJ; the week after hurricane sandy. Hoping this winter is not quite as bad as they are predicting. Would love to live someplace with mild winters!

The brush I use the most is definitely my EcoTools angled eyeliner brush! It has multiple uses, and I WISH I could just find it sold separately instead of in sets!

Well, I’ve been thinking how I need a heavier cream for my skin. This colder weather has dried me out a bit and this thin one isn’t cutting it.

I really like my brown eyes, but I’m thinking that I would like to have hazel/green eyes too. Some of my family members have hazel/green eyes and they are so strikingly beautiful 🙂

It does not snow where I live, and I am glad for that. Pretty as it may be, snow as a regular, seasonal, weather pattern is just too cold for me.

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
