Rise and shine, morning glory! And give it your all, too, because I sure could use a little help this morning in the rising and shining departments, if you know what I mean. I feel like I had too much coffee and tea yesterday, and now I have a caffeine hangover, or something like that. I’m not sure there is such a thing, but I feel like my brain cells aren’t awake yet. “Sure, you can get up, girl, but we’re sleeping in!”

Please bear with me today if I say something that doesn’t quite make sense, or if I go off on weird tangents.

Well, weirder than usual. 🙂

Oh, speaking of tangents, El Hub and I did go to that movie last night, Super 8. In a word: fascinating! Not so much the movie itself, although I did enjoy it, but just how authentically Steven Spielberg it feels. He produced the film, but J.J. Abrams directed, and in many ways it seems like a tribute to Spielberg’s ’80s movies like E.T. and Raiders of the Lost Ark — sort of a throwback to the Golden Age of movies with the spectator as a wide-eyed child, overwhelmed by sound and spectacle, people frantically running around, and lots of fast camera close-ups on faces during big revealing scenes. I grew up on a steady diet of that stuff, so it was fun and, at times, nostalgic to see another talented director faithfully imitate the style so well.

In the film, a group of middle-school friends circa 1979 are making a low-budget movie of their own, a zombie flick, and low-budget doesn’t do justice to their resources. All they really have is a commitment to making a good picture and their own belongings to use as props. Plus, the town they live in as the backdrop, and it’s while filming one scene that they decide to use a passing train to enhance their movie’s “production value.” Of course, that’s when something BIG happens and the story starts rolling. They find themselves caught in the middle of a catastrophic train crash with secret Air Force cargo, etc. etc. [INSERT ALIEN HERE].

I think the movie itself feels maybe a tad too long in the second half, but I really enjoyed it. Highly recommended, especially if you fondly recall Steven Spielberg’s older movies.

Hmm…

Okay, so I know that none of that had to do with makeup or beauty. See, I warned you about me today. 🙂

While I go try to get my brain cells out of bed, please stick around for a bit. It’s…

I didn’t watch that many movies growing up, but I remember when my mom took me to see Terminator 2 at the theater. Not sure she realized that it was an intense action film when she picked it. She usually gets freaked out by those kinds of films, so I remember having to calm her down during the movie even though I was the kid who probably should have been freaked out!

The first movie I remember seeing is the First Jurassic Park, only because when the T-Rex came, I screamed so loud and cried that my mom had to take me out of the theater and calm me down. I was in The King and I and they had everyone do their makeup in this really bizarre way to make the white actors look more “Asian.” I was one of two actual Asians in the production and so I got to do my makeup however I wanted. It was super weird. They had to make their brows black and angular and do weird dramatic unflattering eyeliner. Everyone was required to fake bake and have black hair as well. I was like “Uhh I don’t think that’s what we look like” and the director said “But from the audience, it looks great!” Not so much …

My brother and his friend were sitting behind me and my BFF and they kicked the backs of our seats at a crucial moment and we screamed our heads off. Brats! I still am paranoid about going into the ocean and that was a million years ago.

    As for my “any comment”…

I’m active in a local theater ensemble, and one of my favorite shows to be in was “Cabaret.” I was a Kit Kat Girl and did a lot of dancing/singing. We were dressed in sexy/skimpy lingerie for the show (which was interesting for dancing in) and our makeup was very vixen-ish with dark eyes, red lips, heavy black liner. It was my favorite makeup that I’ve done for theater to date. However, wearing cake makeup for the stage is NOT gentle on sensitive skin – I had to take a hiatus from makeup for a few days to give my skin a break. But it was worth it.

Ooooh. During my internship for my first year undergraduate studies I volunteered to scriptwrite and create a short film for a master’s student’s project (Who’s a financial advisor), along with the other interns, at request of our supervisor. There was a professional filming/production company assisting us, and although the storyline/script didn’t go as I wrote it (Due to the lack of co-operation and experience from the actors/actresses involved), I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out, and I definitely learnt a lot about filming! It’s definitely not easy.

    It’s here if anybody’s interested 😛

    Hi Karen,

The first movie I remember everseeing at the theater, was Walt Disney’s “The Jungle Book”! My mother took me to see it, growing up in Texas. It is still my favorite Disney cartoon movie! 🙂 My favorite movie to date is “Fast Five” with my two favorite men in it!!! That movie was the business! Have you seen it? I love wearing makeup but have never wore anything way out there. One day I want to go to a True Masquerade party, you know like the ones they had in the real old days, in London. I think that would be totally awesome, just like winning this would be.

I was wondering, do you announce the winner or just notify them via e-mail or both?

    Thank you for sharing,
    Vicki

I was to play some sort of native woman whose costume kept getting skimpier. In the end I am my girlfriends decided not to be in the movie. I wasn’t showing all my assets. Thanks.

So I was the Wicked Witch of the West for a play and I didn’t get to pain my face green… but I still needed to be frightening! So I used a light base to make myself very pale. Then, I started the eyes with light green under my eyebrows and dark dreen on my lids. Camo green went in my creases, then a loose black pigment to the corners of my eyes– blending that outward and over the greens created a dark, scary eye with magical green. Some the the green and black I blended under my eyes, giving me deep-set, scary eyes. Thick black eye liner and black lashes completed the look while dark purple lip gloss tipped me from hooker to evil witch. One of the crew girls turned around to ask me a question and shrieked!

Okay, so random comment huh?? I have three cats: Sophie, Logan, and Toby. Sophie is a sweetheart. She’ll wake you up by purring all over your head in the morning. Logan is a hyperactive, stereotypical boy-cat. He’ll run throughout the house, bouncing over everything (you included) and end the night by cuddling up next to you and purring up a storm. Toby is the odd one in the bunch. He eats for comfort and is frightened easily. He’s constantly getting into the randomest places and he has the loudest meow you’ll ever hear. Well, except for Logan! I love my cats!

I was in a hair show in college and the did bright Orange eyeshadow with long Orange eyelashes it was definitely a shock. I recently did a photo shoot where I look like a porcelain doll my hair is very dark and my makeup was very white with dark eye makeup and red lips. Super pretty but very dramatic. So that’s my story I hope I win

In high school, my brother had to film a video as his final project for Spanish class. The goal was to show what he had learned that year. We filmed what turned out to be a semi-racist, stereotypical movie about construction workers eating at Taco Mundo. I think the only actual spanish words in it were taco, mundo, cerveza, bien and gracias… but it was HILLARIOUS! It’s been 8 years, and their teacher still plays it every year for her classes!

My classmates somehow scammed our 12th grade English teacher into letting our final project be movie adaptations of the books we’d read. We mashed up TLC’s A Dating Story (is that still around?) with Pride & Prejudice. Unfortunately, several of our male friend actors couldn’t make the day of the shoot, so I played a narrator part that had been written specifically for a flamboyant guy friend of ours. I stuffed my hair under a cowboy hat and put on a Jersey accent.

I always loved playing with makeup, but most of the time I just put on eyeshadow and lipstick on my BFFs when I was young.. nothing fancy. But I had taken some drama classes in high school and done a LITTLE bit of theater makeup on myself, with some basic principles.

When I got to college, someone in my freshman dorm (a guy) wanted to go as Mephistopheles from “Cats” for Halloween. He asked me if I knew how to do that (theater makeup). I said sure, get me a photo (fake it till you make it!!). I copied the pattern with black and white greasepaint, some pencils and powder and it only took me about a half hour. He WON the costume contest at the party he went to. WOO HOO!!

We watched “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” yesterday, two movies in one week, that’s a lot for us! It’s hard to find movies that are for kids, and yet have enough to interest adults!

I was glad there were a lot of actions that helped calm my nervousness down, thinking about it now, makes me miss our first date, it was sweet.

The most elaborate makeup I ever wore was for a play I was in when I was about…. I don’t even remember, like 12 or so. The King & I. I was one of the little princesses. Keep in mind that I grew up in a small city in West Texas, so there weren’t a lot of southeast Asian actors around for the roles. Those of us who lacked proper facial structure had to make up for it with all kinds of makeup tricks. It took my mom half an hour to get everything right– liquid eyeliner and shadow in a contouring shape, plus bronzer/blush and tons of lipstick, even fake lashes for some kids. It was a blast getting to play with all that makeup and getting to look completely different for a couple of hours every night! And the amazing costumes and sets… I was OBSESSED with Thailand for a while after that, the clothing and the architecture and the history and the food, and I still hope to visit someday.

I adore Angelina Jolie’s makeup, always – especially the recent focus she & her MAs have been taking on her gorgeous, slightly feline eyes rather than the usual lips. With that slight ‘cat lash’ winged eyelash look that I’m seeing on Natalie Portman these days, too…sigh. Anyhow, she (and Ms. Portman) definitely have my fave makeup looks…’specially now that Natalie is a spokeswoman for Dior! (….which is the brand I’d use that Sephora GC for. *shifty eyes* Although I can’t promise I’d turn out as her carbon copy or anything!)

Ive seen tons of Films. I cant even think
Of a “favorite” because theres so many beautiful films. I could say BLUE LAGOON which is a classic old film starring young Brooke Shields is one of my favorites.

Have you ever helped friends film a low-budget movie?
In 10th grade I my friends and I made a little film re-enactment of one of the final scenes in the novel “A Tale Of Two Cities” for our big midterm project in English class. We did the scene of the guillotining of Sydney Carton. We filmed in my friends’ back yard, but it was winter so we had to do it outside in the snow, and our fake blood kept freezing (not to mention the hands of the guy holding the camera!). My boyfriend at the time played Sydney, and I played the woman in line with him who kisses him at the end (I didn’t want anyone else kissing my boyfriend!). He did his speech and then walked around the corner of the garage (where, presumably, the guillotine was waiting for him). My other friend was off-camera and she clanged a shovel on a rock off-camera to make the guillotine noise, and then splashed a bucket of fake blood onto the snow. The film ended with the camera zooming up close on it. It was truly a masterpiece. 🙂

What’s the first movie you can remember going to see?
Hmm. Maybe Disney’s “Little Mermaid”? I was in 3rd grade and I remember that my friends and I friends were really, really obsessed with that movie. We had all of the lyrics from the movie memorized and would randomly break out into song in the middle of class.

Which actress strikes you as having consistently the best makeup?
Angelina Jolie, because she is one of the few actresses who consistently does not wear too much makeup, and she has naturally beautiful features.

Have you ever thought about working as a movie makeup artist?
Oh god, no. I’m not even that good at doing my own makeup! 🙂

Describe the most elaborate/theatrical makeup look you ever wore and what it was for (a big date, Halloween, a play)
Two years ago for Halloween I was a geisha. I did the entire face look with white paint, red lips and eyes, etc. It took half an hour to do. My dad actually helped me with most of it. It was a big hit at the party that night! (I also had an authentic kimono that my friend had brought back for me from japan.)

Well, I’m not sure about the first movie I saw in the cinema… I’m gonna guess Jungle 2 Jungle, Air Bud or Zeus and Roxanne… but maybe I’ve seen films in the cinema earlier, I don’t know :P.

And for low budget movies, no, I haven’t done those, unfortunately :(. I mean, there have been some ideas from friends, but we never got to make it. With one friend circle when I was about 11 or 12, we planned to make a horror movie AND its parody (In the trap of the vampire and In the pants of the martyr… they rhyme in Hungarian :P)… and with my high school class, we were always planning to do a BIG action-comedy flick with every one of us having bigger roles… but we only got to shoot one or two scenes and to write some scenes. I would have been an assassin in it, it would have been so cool :P.

I went to watch Super 8, and really liked it, too! Totally reminded me of E.T. and Cloverfield.

The first movie I can remember seeing is TItanic, haha. One year I dressed up as a geisha for Halloween, but in hindsight, I could have done a lot more in terms of makeup and costuming.

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
